Posted July 31, 200719 yr Mail On Sunday covermounting Bananarama 30 July 2007 - 09:31:56 Source: Music Week Eighties hit trio Bananarama are to follow in the footsteps of Prince by giving an entire album away with The Mail On Sunday. The Best Of Bananarama will be covermounted on next weekend’s edition of the newspaper and feature such hits as Venus, Love In the First Degree, Robert De Niro’s Waiting and Cruel Summer. The paper says the tracks included are the “original studio recordings of their greatest hits”. This latest giveaway comes only weeks after the newspaper added around 600,000 sales to its usual circulation by covermounting Prince’s new studio album Planet Earth. The 2.8m sale was the second highest in the history of the newspaper behind only the 2.84m copies sold for the edition that came out immediately following the death of Princess Diana in August 1997. The Bananarama giveaway is bound to further provoke the anger of retailers who say such covermounts only devalue music in the eyes of consumers. It is not yet known whether HMV will stock the newspaper as it did with the Prince covermount issue. According to yesterday’s edition of The Mail On Sunday, the trio – the most successful female group in terms of number of chart hits in the history of the UK singles chart – are back in the recording studio with a new single and album “in the pipeline”. They will be also headlining the 200,000-capaicty Retrofest festival in Ayrshire.
July 31, 200719 yr I dont really see why the "Bananarama" covermount would provoke further controversy... They're kinda a dead act really, haven't recorded anything for bloody donkeys, and this is all really old stuff anyway that's being given away... The Prince thing was a different story, that was a completely new album full of original material; this just seems to me to be Bananarama just giving away a load of old stuff that's been out there in various compilations for years....

(the latter being one of their finest ever releases). Hardly a 'dead act', Scott. They released some of the best pop music of the 80s and 90s bar none..... ;) I'm looking forward to their forthcoming work with Fedde le Grande - should be interesting.

Mate, I think you'll find that it was more than likely The Slits or Siouxsie who "invented" the whole ethos of Girl Power if anyone did.... :P The actual slogan itself was created as a polemic by the early 90s "Riot Grrl" movement (which was, unsurprisingly, itself influenced by the Punk movement...) and bands like Bikini Kill, L7 and Huggy Bear... Bananarama had no such ideological, feminist or political points to make, they were merely a Pop Group... Bananarama had their place I suppose (I was never really a fan tbh, it was real "school disco" music), but I wasn't really getting at the music as such, more the idea that Bananarama are somehow "courting controversy" by flogging off all their old stuff, which has been doing the rounds over and over for ages, for free in MoS... It's not the same thing, or anything like as controversial, as the Prince thing, which was his entire new album that was given away, not a sampler, or a "hits" compilation....

Anyway Simple Minds, Simply Red, Madness etc etc have been covermounted recently and the Mirror gave a classic 60s and 70s act cd out everyday from somerfield two weeks ago (animals, everley bros etc etc)
