Guy Fawkes Night (aka Bonfire Night)

 

It's 'celebrated' every Nov 5th in the UK.

 

In 1605 a group of English Catholics (including a Mr Guy Fawkes) conspired to blow up the English Houses of Parliament and kill King James I of England (King James the VI of Scotland). The 'Gunpowder Plot' was foiled and The King was saved. Hurrah etc etc :rolleyes:

 

Anyway, Mr Fawkes was subsequently hung, drawn and quartered and every year since then, on the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, people celebrate the saving of King James.

 

That's the history although I doubt very much that people these days have the foggiest idea why they are standing in the cold watching firework displays :lol:
