Posted August 13, 200717 yr UK music hits high note in Europe http://i15.tinypic.com/6c76wbr.jpg 13:8:2007 BPI - Global success for homegrown talent, as UK acts claim one in five artist album sales in Germany and one in ten in France - Share of Anglo-American music market in Germany increases for third straight year - UK record industry sells 27 million albums in Germany and France in 2006 New figures released today by UK recorded music industry association the BPI show that the UK's share of the German and French recorded music markets hit a four-year high in 2006. Germany and France are the world's fourth and fifth largest markets for recorded music, together accounting for 13% of world sales. Global hit albums from James Blunt, Katie Melua and Robbie Williams helped boost the UK's share of these markets to 19.9% and 10.7% respectively - the highest in each market for four years. Germany The UK's share of the German albums market increased by more than five percentage points on 2005 to 19.9%, and with 21.2 million album sales the UK's share of the Anglo-American market grew for a third consecutive year. The figures, supplied by Media Control GfK International, show that the UK claimed a 44.8% share of the Anglo-American market - an increase on 2005's tally of 44.4% and 2004's tally of 37.2%. UK artists with well-established German fanbases achieved particularly strong sales with Coldplay and Depeche Mode also among the year's best sellers, but debuts from Corinne Bailey Rae and James Morrison also featured in the German top 100. Katie Melua’s second album Piece By Piece was the best selling UK album of the year and the second best selling record in Germany overall. In total, twenty three of the top-100 albums were by UK artists, who also claimed a 20.3% share of total German airplay audience according to figures from Nielsen Music Control. France The UK's share of the French market increased for a second successive year, claiming 10.7% of the market, according to BPI analysis of the top-selling 250 albums. More than one in ten albums sold in France are now by UK acts, a strong proportion in what is Europe's second strongest market for domestic repertoire after Russia. James Blunt's global hit Back to Bedlam was the biggest selling UK title in 2006, but Robbie Williams remains one of France's most popular artists with three titles in the UK artists’ top 20. UK artists also claimed a 12.4% share of the total airplay audience in 2006 As UK artists account for more than half of all albums sold in the UK, and one in 12 albums sold in the US - the largest market for recorded music in the world with one third of all sales - UK music continues to perform well in a challenging retail environment and in international markets increasingly dominated by domestic repertoire. "Music is one of the UK's great cultural and economic exports" said BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor. "The fact that UK labels are gaining an increasing share of these major international markets demonstrates the diversity and quality of new British artists. "But this creative success is threatened by the pervasive culture of freeloading online. If UK labels are to keep competing successfully on a world stage, they need government support in educating consumers that true music fans download legally. Only if there is a fair business environment that supports investment will our talent enjoy the opportunities it deserves and the potential of the UK's creative economy be realised." 2. August 13, 200717 yr Author Brilliant news, it really cheered me up, even more so than his love life. All those albums in both those countries and they still didn't feature him as a headline..he defo does not get the recognition that those stats provide. I agree, that is very annoying. He appears more than anyone else, so should be in headlines. -_-
August 14, 200717 yr Great news but of course it's annoying that once again he's not being given proper recognition by ignoring him in the headlines. <_< Do they think people are too thick to read the stats probably and will not notice that RW has got the most albums in those lists ?

August 14, 200717 yr Author Mika leads UK sales successes in Europe 13 August 2007 - 09:31:20 Source; MW Mika’s Life In Cartoon Motion is this week closing in on 2m sales outside of the UK, with the artist expected to spend a fourth week at the top of the French albums chart. The Universal act’s international success, which has also reached Australia, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and the US, comes at a time when, according to BPI figures, UK-signed artists are growing their share of the albums market in several key overseas territories. In Germany, the world’s fourth largest music market with annual album sales of 120.1m units, UK artists’ share of the artist album’s market rose to 19.9% in 2006 from 14.7% in 2005. This strong showing was led by the success of Katie Melua, whose Piece By Piece was the biggest-selling album by a UK artist in Germany last year and the second biggest-selling album of the year overall. Other UK-signed artists who performed well in Germany in 2006 included James Blunt (Back To Bedlam was the eighth biggest-selling artist album of the year); Robbie Williams (Rudebox was the 10th top seller) and Bullet For My Valentine (their debut album The Poison ranked at 85 in the year-end best sellers). In keeping with the patriotic theme, UK major EMI enjoyed particular success in Germany: 18 of the Top 40 best-selling UK titles were by artists signed to its various labels, including obvious names such as Coldplay and The Beatles, but also the likes of Placebo and Massive Attack. In France, the world’s fifth largest music market with CD album sales of 75.7m units in 2006, UK acts’ share of the top 250 artist albums rose for the second successive year, from 7.3% in 2004, to 10.2% in 2005 and 10.7% in 2006. While this is considerably lower than the level of penetration in Germany, the BPI explains that success is harder to come by in France compared to other European territories, due to the dominance of domestic repertoire – in 2006, French artists accounted for 63% of all sales. As in Germany, James Blunt and Robbie Williams were key contributors in terms of sales and airplay: Blunt’s Back To Bedlam was the biggest-selling album by a UK artist in France last year and the 11th biggest-selling album of the year overall; Williams’ Intensive Care was the 18th top artist album overall, while his single Advertising Space was the UK’s biggest airplay hit on French radio with 4,006 plays. An early contender for the UK airplay crown for 2007 is likely to be Mika. His single Relax, Take It Easy recently topped the charts in France, and Universal director of international Chris Dwyer says that this success was based on strong radio support. “It is a phenomenal international success. We are close to selling 2m units, ex-UK,” she says. “It is a combination of having a fantastic album, his image and a record that fits well with radio formats. He had top five airplay hits pretty much across the board.”
August 14, 200717 yr Author As in Germany, James Blunt and Robbie Williams were key contributors in terms of sales and airplay: Blunt’s Back To Bedlam was the biggest-selling album by a UK artist in France last year and the 11th biggest-selling album of the year overall; Williams’ Intensive Care was the 18th top artist album overall, while his single Advertising Space was the UK’s biggest airplay hit on French radio with 4,006 plays. .” Great news about Advertising Space :o I never knew he was THAT big in France myself so I am most pleased. ^_^
