May 7, 200619 yr Author 8th Express Yourself 91 Points After the huge no. 1 success of Like A Prayer, Madonna didn't chose for second best, but released Express Yourself as second single. It seemed like Madonna wanted to get back on her critics by saying everybody should 'express himself' like she does; a message she would repeat in 1994's Human Nature. While Like A Prayer caused controversy in the Catholic church, Express Yourself stirred up opinions about feminism. David Fincher directed what became one of Madonna's biggest video projects. With a price tag of $2 million it's also her most expensive. The video won awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Direction at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, where Madonna performed the song as well. May 14, 200619 yr Author 7th Material Girl 95 Points "Some boys try and some boys lie but I don't let them play (no way) Only boys who save their pennies Make my rainy day" This song was one of the first examples of Madonna's multi-layered messages. While the lyrics give one message (pure materialism), the video gives the song a different meaning, one of immaterialism and pure love. Unfortunately, like the men in the video, the critics didn't seem to get the real message and accused Madonna of promoting materialism and selfishness. Madonna still gets referred to as the 'Material Girl', and since she's become a mother, often as the 'Material Mum'. After the release of the spiritual Ray Of Light, one often said "the once material girl has gone immaterial and spiritual... The performances of Material Girl on the first 3 tours always had something ironic and funny. In 1998 Madonna vowed she would never sing it again as she hated it.So For the Re-Invention Tour in 2004 Madonna was set to play "Dress You Up" with a electric Guitar untill Jamie King persuaded her to do Material Girl.It was a 14 year gap since Madonna played this song live.Madonna's image was changed completely. No glamourous diva in pink Monroe dress; instead we saw a rock chick in army gear who had strapped on her electric guitar. This version totally rocked! Madonna pretended not remembering the words and asked the audience to sing along and help her out with the lyrics(yet more proof she hated the song). The video and TV screens showed all mathematical equations and pictures of Albert Einstein. UK Peak no.3 US Peak no.2 http://www.mad-eyes.net/disco/lav/images/single_mg.jpg

May 15, 200619 yr Author 6th Papa Don't Preach 98 Points Just missing the top five This second single followed the example of predecessor Live To Tell and became a huge no. 1 hit in the US (Gold), UK, Canada and Australia. In Japan it reached no. 2. The song heated discussions about abortion. Anti-abortion organisations wanted Madonna to speak up against abortion, while women organisations and parents criticized Madonna for encouraging teenage pregnancy. Madonna said she just wanted the song to be "a celebration of life, not a national controversy". In 1986 the song received a Grammy nomination for Outstanding Pop Vocal Performance. The video, directed by James Foley, visualises the story of the song: a teenage girl gets pregnant and is terrified to tell her dad (played by actor Danny Aiello). Romantic images of Madonna (with short blond hair) and the boyfriend are combined with images of her dancing alone in the dark - as if she's crying in the dark for help. In the end she tells her father. He reacts angry but in the final shot he takes her into his arms. At the 1987 MTV VMA the video received a nomination for Best Cinematography and Best Overall Performance, and it won an award for Best Female Video. May 18, 200619 yr Author 5th Holiday 100 Points Holiday was the real first single from the first album, which was released in 1983. Although it's an anthem among fans. The song as featured on every tour Madonna has done so far.In the UK the song has been in the charts three time once in January 1984 peaking at no.6 then with Madonna mania running wild Holiday came back in the charts on a re-entry at no.2! only to be beaten By Madonnna's "Into The Groove" in 1991 Warner bros released Holiday for a second time to promote the Immaculate Collection. No Official video was ever released for the song. May 18, 200619 yr Author 4th Like A Virgin 104 Points http://http//www.mad-eyes.net/disco/lav/images/single_lav.jpg Though Like A Virgin seems tailor-made for Madonna, the song was actually written years earlier, as a ballad. Producer Nile Rodgers didn't feel it was right for Madonna and rewrote it to a more uptempo catchy song. In November 1984 Madonna released it as title track of her second album, and it would soon become one of her best known songs ever. Like A Virgin was her first no. 1 hit, stealing the top spot in the US for 6 weeks and eventually reaching Gold. It also reached no. 1 in Canada, Japan, Australia and numerous other countries. At its sales peak it sold 75.000 copies a day! It marked the beginning of the controversy around Madonna.Madonna performed Like A Virgin for the first time live on the 1984 Video Music Awards. She hadn't been very known before the show, but that was about to change. Dressed in a wedding dress, Madonna crawled on the floor, practically masturbating with the veil, causing an enormous controversy. 20 years later, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera paid tribute to that performance, before singing backup to Madonna's Hollywood. A few months after her first VMA performance, Madonna sang the no. 1 hit on her very first Virgin Tour.Madonna says she hates the song these days but will she peform this on the Confessions Tour?. May 18, 200619 yr Author 3rd Into The Groove 107 Points http://www.mad-eyes.net/disco/lav/images/single_itg.jpg Madonna wrote this song for Desperately Seeking Susan, her first successful movie. At first it wasn't included in Like A Virgin, neither was it released as a single. In the US it was a B-single of Angel, but turned out a much bigger success than the single itself. But since it wasn't commercially released in the US, it didn't enter the charts there. The song was included in the re-issue of the Like A Virgin album in Europe, where it was released as a single in July 1985. Strangely, the soundtrack of Desperately Seeking Susan didn't contain the song. It topped the charts in the UK for 4 weeks and in Japan for 3 weeks. It was also Madonna's first no. 1 hit in Belgium.Into The Groove was an absolute highlight on the Re-Invention Tour. First there was a fabulous intro by a Scottish bagpiper & drummers. Then all dancers appeared on stage in kilts, dancing to the beats of the Into The Hollywood Groove mix. Madonna literally jumped out on stage and kicked into this fantastic choreography with wooden sticks. On the screen Missy Elliott accompanied her with cool beats. Finally, the bagpiper re-appeared on stage to follow Madonna's dance steps. There was so much energy during this performance that the whole venue was really getting into the groove!.It holds the joint record for Madonna's longest UK no.1 to stay at the top of four with with Vogue. May 18, 200619 yr 'Vogue' is not *that* good. Yes, the video's very famous and she's being all cutting-edge by stealing the gays' dance routine but it does not have the sing-a-long charm of 'Groove' or 'Virgin'. 'Like A Prayer' to win!
May 18, 200619 yr Author PS Are you going to do a GHV2 rate? Yes i did think of doing one.But if you like Tim you can do it as your preety good at it.
May 18, 200619 yr Yes i did think of doing one.But if you like Tim you can do it as your preety good at it. Thank you for the compliment. But I don't know all the overseas chart details for Madonna at all so I don't think I'd be very good at doing the results thread itself. You should do it. I'd gladly do the totting up scores bit for you to help though.
May 19, 200619 yr Author I bet this following song as never come second in anything Many will be surprised to know that Vogue, one of Madonna's biggest hits, was originally written as a B-single for Keep It Together. Fortunately her record company realised the song had a lot of hit potential and they released it late March, 1990. They quickly added it to I'm Breathless, though it had nothing to do with Dick Tracy and had a completely different sound from the other tracks. Vogue, a tribute to Hollywood celebs and diva's, became one of her biggest no. 1 hits, topping the charts for several weeks in the US (reaching double platinum), UK, Canada and Japan. In Australia it was released as B-single of Keep It Together, as originally planned, which put this single on the top spot for 5 weeks. Vogue received an American Music Award as 'Favorite Dance Single'.David Fincher directed the magnificent video, which not only pays tribute to famous Hollywood stars, but also to 'vogue-ing', a dance style that until then was typical for the gay scene: it mimicks the poses of the models in Vogue Magazine. The black & white video shows Madonna in a daring see-through shirt, but also in very classy clothes and with different hair styles, while she's surrounded by male dancers 'striking a pose'. Much like the song, the video is a Madonna classic. Originally MTV wanted to cut out the shot where her breasts are clearly visible through her lace blouse. Madonna refused and MTV backed down. Late 1990, there was also a video from the famous VMA performance. On that award show, the original video received 8 nominations and won in the categories 'Best Editing in a Video', 'Best Cinematography in a Video' and 'Best Direction in a Video'. May 19, 200619 yr Author Late February/early March 1989 - right before the release of the album with the same title - Like A Prayer was released as lead-off single. Combining pop, rock, dance and even gospel music, this great song hit the music scene - and in a way the society - as a bomb and would soon become an all-time Madonna classic and a favorite among fans. Along with Vogue, it would become one of two Madonna songs that topped all the charts in the US and the UK. It was no. 1 in the US Hot 100, Airplay, Sales, Club Play and Maxi-singles chart. No wonder it reached Platinum status. It was also no. 1 in the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and numerous other countries. The fantastic music and lyrics made the song great; the Mary Lambert video made it notorious. There are many possible interpretations, but basically the video shows Madonna, witnissing a murder on a white girl. When a black man is wrongfully accused of the crime, she comes up for his defence. She prays for him in church and is seen dancing in front of burning crosses, as a contra-reaction to racist discrimination. Inside the church she kisses a black saint (or is it the black innocent guy?). There's a happy end, and they pretend it to be just a theatre play. A few days before the premiere of the video, Pepsi first aired their brand-new commercial which starred Madonna and used the tune of Like A Prayer. However when the video was first shown, it caused outrage within the Catholic church, who were offended by Madonna using signs of stigmata (her bleeding hands), by her kissing a black saint and by "having an orgasm on the altar". The church urged people to stop buying Pepsi as a protest, after which Pepsi stopped the broadcast of their commercial after only two airings. At the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, Like A Prayer won the Viewers Choice Award, and was nominated for Best Video of the Year. http://www.mad-eyes.net/disco/lap/images/single_lap.jpg THE WINNER - LIKE A PRAYER 122 Points [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icrUkBaSefs.swf
