Apart from the other two I mentioned on the other thread (Leader Of The Pack, Johnny Remember Me) the one that immediately springs to mind is "Endless Sleep" by Jody Reynolds except, of course, she doesn't drown in the end. The impression, because the lyrics are in the past tense, is that she's gone into the sea and drowned herself but, rather disappointingly, our narrator rescues her in the last verse!

Then there's Elvis's classic "Old Shep". Do dogs count?

Anyone remember a song called "Shannon"? It was by a beardy American called Henry Gross. It reached #32 in August 1976. Got lots of radio play. Another death disc about a dog, who swam out to sea and didn't return.
For some reason, I'm thinking 'It's a Mistake' by Men At Work deals with death, on a larger scale...maybe I'm mistaken....

Ones I remember, quite a few actually :D

David Bowie - Space Oddity

Bobby Goldsboro - Honey

Rod Stewart - Killing of Georgie

Ultravox - Dancing with tears in my eyes

David Bowie - Five Years

R Dean Taylor - Indiana wants me

Tom Jones - Delilah

Terry Jacks - Seasons in the sun

Paperlace - Billy don't be a hero

Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billy Joe

Hot Chocolate - Emma

Georgie Fame - Bonnie and Clyde

Don Maclean - American Pie

Billy Don't Be a Hero was done by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods, too

Paper Lace did The Night Chicago Died

One Tin Soldier fits here, but, I don't recall the artist

Run, Joey, Run also fits, and, again, I forget the artist

Everly Brothers - Lightning Express - (Young boy's mother dying and he is trying to get to her in time to say goodbye)

Walker Brothers - Archangel (Girl dying in her sleep)

Tom Jones - Delilah - (Guy murders his cheating girlfriend)

Mark Dinning - Teen Angel - (Car crash on a level crossing kills boy's girlfriend)

Clarence Carter - Patches - (Young boy taking care of his mother and recalling what his dead father told him)

Bee Gees - New York Mining Disaster 1941 - (Coal Mine disaster)

Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years - (Guy who never got on with his father then tries to make up before his father dies)

HIM - Join Me (double suicide)

Though this is only about 6 years old.

Don't know if you count this or not.

Jim Reeves - Old Tige (B-side of distant Drums) about his dog dying.

"quick joey small (run joey run)" was by the kastenetz katz singing orchestral circus in '68, good track, though its about a jailbreak, not a killing......

The first line went:

Quick Joey Small ran over the wall with a ball and chain behind him

Kasenetz Katz were a collaboration of members of 3 different US Bubblegum bands.

The bands were:

1910 Fruitgum Co. - 1 UK hit - Simon Says #2 in 1968 - 5 US hits

Lemon Pipers - 2 UK hits - Green Tambourine #7 and Rice Is Nice #41 in 1968 - 3 US Hits

somewhere down the vaults theres a thread on kasenetz katz and bubblegum. they were 2 producers steve kasenetz and omri katz (i think). they created those other acts but brought them together for 'joey'.

yeah Johnnie Layton, was watching the Joe Meek thing on bbc 4 the other day. cool record. someone i was talking to said that Marc Almond covered it, yeah can see that will be the type of record that would suit him.

The artist was Coven and was a massive US hit

The song I refer to here, the girlfriend is killed by her father, accidentally, as the father was aiming for the boyfriend, Joey, in this instance, and, the girl stepped in the line of fire....and this was released in the mid-1970's, about '75, I think
