Al Fayed blasts bishop's plea for Diana peace

AFP - Sunday, September 2 04:07 amLONDON (AFP)

Mohamed Al Fayed has lashed out at a senior bishop's plea for the wrangling over Diana, princess of Wales' memory to cease, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Al Fayed, the father of Diana's boyfriend Dodi Fayed, who was also killed by a tragic 1997 car crash in Paris, took a swipe at Richard Chartres, the bishop of London.

The Egyptian tycoon branded Chartres a "stuffed shirt" in an indication that next month's inquest -- which Al Fayed is heavily involved in -- will be a bitter affair, The Sunday Times reported.

"Let it end here," Chartres urged the congregation at Friday's memorial service for Diana -- to which Al Fayed was not invited -- which marked 10 years since the fatal crash which took her life at the age of 36.

Her sons Princes William, now 25, and Harry, 22, both spoke, with the younger royal delivering a touching speech about his mother.

"Prince Harry had the grace to acknowledge the suffering of other families who lost someone that night," Al Fayed said in a statement.

"This stuffed shirt of a clergyman should take lessons from the 22-year-old prince in how to behave. He certainly shouldn't have hijacked a memorial service dedicated to Diana, princess of Wales, to let us know various of his personal opinions -- for that's all they were.

"He preached at us to let her memory rest, but how can that happen when the truth is still being covered up? As a religious man the bishop has no right to interfere in the court process which will establish what happened that night."

Last year, a report from Lord John Stevens, former head of London's Metropolitan Police, ruled out any conspiracy and said that the crash, which also killed the car's driver Henri Paul, was a "tragic accident."

Al Fayed alleges Diana and his eldest son were killed in an establishment plot concocted by senior royals.

The owner of the giant London emporium Harrods said he could not understand why Chartres, an executor of Diana's will, seemed to want to sideline his enduring quest.

"Anyone who loses a child in such a horrific way should be allowed to know what really happened and I am not resting until I uncover the murderers who took the lives of two beautiful people," Al Fayed said.

"A poll today says 89 percent of people think their deaths were not an accident. I get hundreds of letters of support each week. We need justice, for my family's sake, and for the sake of the princes."

Do you think Al Fayed is right to suggest that Dodi & Diana was murdered or not?

Conspiracy Theories

The major conspiracy theories so far...

Independent on Sunday.co.uk

Famous people meeting strange ends is a phenomenon that always seems to bring out the conspiracy theorists. The death of Diana, Princess of Wales is no exception.

Here we look at the major conspiracy theories to have seen the light of day so far.

- The Big Three Conspiracy Theories: Explained and reviewed

Faked Death

1. Plot

Fed up with the constant intrusions into her private life by the media, Diana, helped by the huge resources of Dodi, arranges a spectacular 'death' from which she can retreat into blissful isolation. One version of the theory claims that the crash was an attempt at a faked death that went horribly wrong.

2. Evidence

a. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones still lives, but testimony from Mercedes auto experts says that it would have been almost impossible for anyone to have survived a crash in the tunnel in a car going at 121 mph. Maybe, as driver Henri Paul's lawyers claim, the car was not going that fast. Maybe the crash was faked by the army-trained Rees-Jones who had previously deposited Di and Dodi elsewhere.

b. Dodi's usual driver was not used. Mystery still surrounds Henri Paul, the security officer who stepped in at the last minute to drive the Mercedes S-280. It took a full two days for his name to be revealed, for instance. Co-workers at the Ritz Hotel say he kept himself to himself and never socialised with them. One version of this conspiracy has it that Paul simply did not exist, another that he was quickly whisked away from the hospital after being declared dead by doctors in cahoots with the Al Fayed family.

c. Just six hours before she died Di let slip to Daily Mail reporter Richard Kray that she was about to withdraw completely from public life.

Likelihood: 0.5/10

Parts of it sound feasible but what about Di's two children? It is almost inconceivable that she would want to miss out on the rest of their lives. The chances of her coming back to see them without being noticed are surely slim, though plastic surgery permitting it might be prudent to look out for a similarly built 'nanny' appearing on the scene in the future. Plus why would Mohamed Al Fayed still consistently complain about an establishment cover up.

MI6 Killed Di

1. Plot

Rogue elements in the British secret service decide that Di is a threat to the throne, and therefore the stability of the state. They take her out.

2. Evidence

a. Recent revelations have shown that there are rogue elements in the secret service who act as more or less autonomous cells. Some of these have been revealed to have a pretty strange view of what constitutes a threat to the state. For instance, they have files on John Lennon, current British Home Secretary (Interior Minister) Jack Straw and they once tried to destabilise the 1970s Labour government. It is not inconceivable that the same agents who believed Lennon was capable of leading revolution also believed Diana was capable of fomenting popular unrest.

b. MI6 is suspected of bugging Diana throughout her years in the Royal limelight, and many believe they were behind the leaking of the 'Squidgygate' phone tapping tapes which damaged her image during the break up with Charles.

c. Bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones was a former member of the crack Parachute Regiment, one of the most toughest in the British army. He also completed two stints in Northern Ireland and served in the Royal Military Police, just the kind of background that would have seen him come into contact with members of the secret service. Theorists cite the fact Rees-Jones survived the crash as evidence that he was in on the plot to snuff out the Diana threat.

Likelihood: 2/10

Few doubt that the nutters at MI6 are capable of anything but surely even they would have had qualms about bumping off Diana, if only for the reason that her death might bring on the very things they most fear, the drift toward a republican state in the UK, as Charles loses still more popularity.

Diana, Princess of Wales: Did MI6 Kill Her?

Following Diana's sudden death in Paris, August 31, 1997 many doubts have surrounded the official story of the paparazzi chasing a drunk driver at speed toward an inevitable and tragic accident. Below you will find an examination of the evidence surrounding the number one conspiracy theory- MI6 killed Diana...

The Two Main Theories

a) One or more rogue "cells" in the British secret service construct and carry out a plot to kill Diana.

B) An official campaign by MI6 to assassinate Diana, sanctioned by elements of the establishment.

The Possible Motives

a) The rogue elements in MI5 (National security) or MI6 (International security) decide that Di is a threat to the throne, and therefore the stability of the state. They take her out.

B) With similar motives to the possible rogue elements, the official campaign is driven by a fear of Diana's possible to conversion to Islam (Dodi being a Muslim) and the implication on the Church and State were the two Princes, William and Harry, to follow their mother's lead.

The Evidence

Circumstantial it maybe, but put together is it capable of raising sufficient doubt that this was an accident?

Below are some of the questions and doubts that are raised by the investigation so far

- The rapid disposal of the bodies of Diana and Dodi. Diana had no post mortem prior to burial in Althorp. Victims of sudden death require a post mortem by law in the UK.

- The missing white Fiat Uno: With such a large-scale investigation by French authorities could only secret agents have evaded the police's net around Paris? We know the car hit the Mercedes used by Di and Dodi, thanks to traceable paint marks on the Benz. Witnesses refer to the car lurching around the road at varying speeds as both it and the Merc entered the tunnel of death.

- Henri Paul, driver of the Limo. The mis-information surrounding this key figure is enormous. First he was said to be driving at up to 120 mph, recent reports by professional crash investigators suggest 60 mph, even less on impact.

Was he really drunk? It is accepted that he had two Ricard drinks at the Ritz, but no other evidence has emerged to support this claim other than significant video evidence of him struggling to park his Mini at the Ritz prior to driving the Mercedes, beyond questionable results from a blood test from his corpse. Why questionable? Because it is common for the alcohol level to rise in bodies after death regardless of consumption. The test also showed a very high level of carbon monoxide (20 per cent) in his blood. Experts say this would have incapacitated him before he set off on his fatal journey, and yet the hotel's video evidence shows him walking around and talking normally. An alcoholic? Well , as a pilot, he passed a rigorous health check two days before the accident. His liver showed no signs of abuse on post-mortem.

Then there is the question of the multiple bank accounts Paul held, with balances showing income far in excess of his 20 000 UKP salary as acting head of security at the Ritz. Some friends have suggested he was a long term "sleeper" agent for a secret service agency, almost certainly French intelligence.

- Trevor Rees Jones (Fayed bodyguard)- The only survivor. One time member of Her Majesty's armed forces, rumours suggest he may have been a "sleeper" agent for MI5 or MI6, particularly as the establishment were keen to keep tabs on Mohammed Al Fayed. Why was he the only person in the car to wear a safety-belt?

- Explosion, followed by Bang- Immediately after the crash news was broadcast, witnesses appeared on US TV saying that they heard an explosion or bang before they heard the car crash. Was this a gunshot, or a bomb?

- White Light- Other witnesses describe an extremely bright white light, much stronger than a photographer's flashbulb, illuminating the tunnel before the crash sounds. Powerful anti-personnel flash-guns are available to private citizens for as little as 250 UKP. The security forces have access to much stronger tools. All of which are capable of blinding a victim for several minutes - easily enough to cause a fatal crash. Crucially there would be no physical evidence left for investigators.

- James Hewitt- Former lover of Diana claims he was warned on several occasions by elements of the security forces and a member of the royal family to stop seeing the Princess or his health would suffer! Hewitt has been exposed previously as being very willing to exploit a situation for his own ends, as in the publication of a sleazy book about Diana to which he contributed. Whilst coincidentally or not Prince Harry's features are far more similar to James Hewitt than to Prince Charles, so if the establishment could deny & cover up that, then surely they could cover up the murder of Diana as an accident?

- Paparazzi- Initially blamed for the crash, most witnesses seem to agree that the bikes were not close enough to the Mercedes in the tunnel to have actually interfered with its progress.

NB These are just a selection of matters which cause concern for investigators. Many other points are raised by the "accident" but for reasons of space are not dealt with here.

Conclusions

There are many questions that arise out of this incident. The most plausible explanation still appears to be a tragic accident - Paul who was driving to some degree under the influence of alcohol, tried to accelerate away from the pursuing photographers, lost control going into the tunnel (after the slight curve in the road, and maybe as the Uno impeded his progress) and crashed into the tunnel's thirteenth pillar at a well known Paris road accident blackspot.

This maybe the most plausible explanation, however, we feel that without dramatic new evidence , such as the Uno and driver turning up, this will never be certain.

While there remains doubt as to whether it was an accident it is reasonable to question what the possible alternatives are. The most plausible of these has to involve members of the UK establishment and secret service as few others had anything to lose from Diana and Dodi's relationship. To keep such a plot secret we believe it would have to be the work of a small, isolated cell working under its own auspices within the system.

Former agents have told of a plot to destabilise the then Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson in the Seventies. Wilson did indeed resign from office, shocking political commentators at the time, although other evidence has come out to explain that he was starting to suffer from Alzheimer's so he was merely pushed before he had to jump. We know that our intelligence service keeps records on Peace campaigners and Union officials for the "threat" of being radicals.

If the service really does operate as efficiently as James Bond films lead us to believe, which we doubt very strongly, then there would be nothing to stop them orchestrating Diana's death AND making it appear to be an accident.

But as yet there is clearly far more evidence to support an accident than a secret plot - such as Trevor Rees Jones was the only survivor even though the Merc's point of impact at the pillar was on the front-passengers side (nearest to Trevor) because he was the only one wearing a seatbelt. Whilst Diana frequently never wore a seat belt when travelling because she found it restrictive. For us though, the jury is still out.

Target Dodi

1. Plot

Business enemies of Dodi and his father Mohammed Al Fayed assassinate Dodi, with the death of Di a magnificent cover for their operation.

2. Evidence

Al Fayed has not got to the top without making some serious enemies along the way. The owner of Harrods fought a bitter battle for the top London store some years ago and has also been denied British nationality after question marks were raised about his business practise. His activities have included under the counter payments to Conservative MPs. as his oldest son and heir, Dodi would be an obvious target for anyone wanting to settle a score with Al Fayed.

Likelihood: 0.5/10

With Di involved, the police operation is likely to be one of the biggest in Paris history so any assassin would be taking one hell of a risk by cutting the break cable, say, of Dodi's car. Then again, the day of the Jackal is a Paris story.

The car was clocked doing 96 at the entrance to the tunnel so bang goes that theory

If she had been wearing a seatbelt she would be alive now enjoying life with the princes, not wearing a seatbelt killed her not MI6, Prince Philip, Mossad, Charles, Will Young or anyone else, the only survivor of the crash was the only one wearing a seatbelt, coincidence ?? Not

I feel sorry for Wills and Harry but this was nothing more than a standard RTA and the death of a stupid bint not putting on her seatbelt

Its time to move on and the media stopping going on about her every bloody day :manson:

The tabloids and their obsession with Diana even 10 years after her death is tacky, tasteless and bloody annoying, reading about Diana these days is about as preferable as

ITS TIME TO MOVE ON

As a sub note to the whole thing I was disgusted that there was a minutes silence at football ground yesterday for Diana :manson: :manson: WTF did she have to do with football ? no minutes silence for Ray Jones a brilliant young talent of a striker killed at 18 only a week ago yet a minutes silence for a woman who had no connection to football whatsoever    :manson:

The death of any mother is sad - is sad for the 2 young sons who lost their mother.

But I have to agree with Craig .... move on - stop with the conspirancies and the same old bits of simpering footage.

There is nothing new in this story and I for one am heartily sick of hearing about it.

I understand Al Fayed's grief but nothing will bring his son back ........ so needs to be let go.

The reaction to the Death of Princess Diana by the Great British public was one the strangest reactions I have ever seen in my life.

Obviously her death was tragic, especially for her two sons and she clearly had an unhappy marriage, as Royal protocol denied Charles the right to marry the unglamourous Camilla back in 1969 before she was married (the same with Andrew to model Koo Stark at the beginning of the 1980s), but it is obvious to most sane intelligent, logical people that her death was an accident.

But ultimately her being voted in 3rd place in the BBC poll as the greatest Brit in history is on a par with Robbie Williams being voted the greatest male singer of all time. She was not even the greatest person who died that week, but the great humanitarian works of Mother Theresa are forgotten in the UK.

As for Al Fayed's & the national disgrace to journalism that is the Daily Express, the idea that Prince Phillip instigated the murder of Dodi & Diana is a joke. When you consider time & time again the royal family prove that they can't organise a p*** up in a brewery....

Whilst the Daily Express have shown what great judgement they have by being the main sycophantic supporters of the McCanns over the disappearance of their 4 year old daughter Madeleine, when the Portuguese police are now not allowing the McCanns to leave the country because other journalists are understandably assuming that they are now the chief suspects.

I still like to think of it as an almighty c**k-up. I have this vision of the queen doodling idly on a pad and writing the name "Dodi". Unfortunately a Secret Service agent read this as "Do Di" so he did.

Seriously though, the Express have been going on for years about how she was murdered with various implausible plots mentioned. If there was any truth in this, surely the other papers and other news organisations will have followed up the stories. But they haven't. This should lead to the conclusion that all the stories were nonsense. Either that or MI5 or whoever murdered her paid all the news organisations to keep quiet but somehow forgot to pay the Express.

I suspect that Richard Desmond has a nice little expense account at Harrods and never gets billed in return for being Fayed's mouthpiece and continually spouting farcical conspiracy theories that even people in Broadmoor could not conjure up

Ooh, a counter-conspiracy theory

But it's a lot more plausible than the nonsense in the Express over the years.

It was an accident, there is no way Mi5/Mi6 could have organised a hit then make it look like an accident in such a short time, its not as if they were living in Paris for weeks, to know their movements.

Al Fayed is angry that his son died, we all would be if in his position, looking for answers, clutching at straws to find someone to blame. But there is no one to blame, people are killed every day in car accidents, unfortunately Di was just another statistic.

Thats exactly how I see her I cared no more for Diana's death than any other death I read about on the roads

Tragedy for family or whatever but ultimately won't change my life

spot on brian.... and as craig said, if she had have been wearing a seatbelt her chances of surviving would be greatly increased.
