Name some of the artist/bands who were really huge during their prime that have faded into obscurity within a short period of time and the artists/bands that you rarely hear on the radio anymore?

Some examples:

Gary Numan (Enjoyed three back-to-back #1 albums in the UK. Four years later, he could barely even chart.)

Sparks (Had a huge UK hit with "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" and then faded into relative obscurity.)

Soft Cell (massive first album and then faded)

Strangely the three examples you chose have at least still got music careers. They can usually get someone to release the music they make, and they can fill out decent sized venues when they choose to.

Real obscurity would have to be someone like Billy Fury, who had a string of hits but ended up working in a factory in the 70s!

Sparks are still making great music. And they still put on a good live show.

yeah brian91 is talking utter bollocks, he should get out of his 1982 copy of the guiness book of hit singles and get some decent records

Listen to whose talking , just about everyone of your posts is utter bollocks, why reply in a sentence when a f***ing 5 page piece if c**p can be inserted. Does anyone ever read your posts, or do they give up after the 14th paragraph and the umpteenth video.

now thats just personal, keep it about the music now, if you want to criticise me because of the music thats fine like i was criticising you, anyway you were just talking bollocks anyway. anyway good to see your reply's not been cut and pasted for once

I personally would n't say those are the best examples of what you are talking about.

Numan still has a career, especially since being acclaimed as a forerunner of NIN.

Sparks have been recording for years, they're just too weird to get hits now. And weren't they on Jonathan Ross not all that long ago.

Soft Cell stopped selling because they split up!

and also the motorcyle accident couldnt have helped. even tho its a covers album (which are usually useless anyway see duranduran thank you) stardom road is supposed to be excelent.

he's a heritage act and so most radio programmers are not gonna be bothered, they gonna have wall to wall timberlake instead, so obv the singles are not gonna get in the charts. however critics are and they are kinda more important (if you can get a mag/paper thats on your wavelength)

Can we all calm down? Brian91's original post referred to commercial success. I said that Sparks were still making great music. I stand by that but it doesn't alter the fact that they haven't enjoyed a lot of commercial success. That's a pity but we have to accept it. Maybe one day the record buying public will recognise their genius. Sadly, I doubt it will happen.

but he stated that they had faded into obscurity and picked those out as examples as fact.

but of course you dont hear them on the radio because all the commercial radio stations are owned by 1 of about 3 groups (hello sir charles allen) and they all want the same market and so all have mostly the same programming where they kinda just have nelly furtado even like 2nd song (something boring sked anyway like that anyway)

But that's my point. Sparks are still a great band producing great music. But most radio stations don't play them. In terms of commercial success, they have faded into obscurity. They don't deserve that fate but that's what's happened.

but when there like only 7 new entries in the chart and 5 of them are american and you have some boring record that radio and hits wont stop playing on the chart for a billion weeks, of course loads of things are not gonna be there if you are so focus on the chart like its the only thing that matters. its nice to keep a log of the chart but its not the end of everything, its not the final word. most of the records ive bought today will have bands who have a shorter lifespan than a newt and them theres all these band in the back of uncut like deacon blue (hello james blunt in 20 years  time) and asia and my life story and america who are still going around and around and around but there at a lower level than the critical accalaim and affection that those listed in the first post are and are getting from the press.
