dont know why everyone thinks they are so bad, maybe its just like westlife and mcfly, its so fricking easy to do so.

Because it was awful music in the main. I hate these revisionists who come along and claim it was some kind of golden age of British pop. I mean not only did they give us Jason Donovan and Sonia but also The Reynolds Girls, Rick Astley, Sinitta, Pat & Mick et al

well maybe 3 hours straight of all their back cat might be a bit too much (esp when the hits had them on a loop)

But it was like this for about 2 whole YEARS back in the late 80s.

however better than some of the $h!t they had later on like

human league - dont you want me baby

Sorry but the whole of the Dare album is brilliant. Great pop music from a true golden age of British Pop.

You are right about Karma Chameleon though

Is he that bassist who played slide bass on just about every record made for about a year and a half.

cant say if its there are some good records on it, only know a couple of the singles and as for dont you want me baby, not even alcazar could rescue it, (however open your heart is worse, even more painful, gonna stick with WXJL Tonight)

dont know why everyone thinks they are so bad,

try... because they were utter $h!te!

before s.a.w. pop was dominated by groups, people who could write, play, perform their own original material. s.a.w. simply dumbed down pop, making it soul-less, manufactured, bland, shallow... theres NO comparison between westlife and mc fly, mcfly belong to the 'pre s.a.w.' tradition of pop.

Generally speaking for music the 1980s started great, but went down hill fast after 1984 and 1987, 1988 & much of 1989 were appalling years musically.

The Baggy and Grunge eras were good for me.. and we had shoegazing as well.

Everything on Motown? Phil Spector's productions? Most soul music? Although I thought SAW were terrible it doesn't follow that all music not written by the performer was terrible. Some of the greatest performers hardly wrote at all (Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley etc).

SAW were poor because their songs were mind-numbingly over-simple. Quick hits with no lasting power. Who plays 'em now?

Depends what you were into. If you were into American indie they were great years (Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, The Pixies, Nirvana etc). If you were into dance music this was a very important period (Detroit techno, New York house etc). If you were into UK indie there was a lot going on (post-C86 bands, The Stone Roses, The Jesus And Mary Chain etc). The late eighties were a formative period for what was to come in the nineties (grunge, rave, Britpop etc).

I've never understood people who didn't "get" the late eighties. I guess you were too busy listening to the garbage being played on Radio 1 by "Smashy and Nicey" ageing DJs!

Not quite sure what relevance pictures of Scatman John are to a thread about 80s music, but there you go....

And as for the actual topic matter, easily "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. The lyrics, the melody, EVERYTHING about it was coated in sickly, mushy gloop. Vile stuff.

the difference was... motown artists WERE artists who could actually sing :), not washed up soap stars or tea boys!

yeah Stevie Wonder totally!! has to be put in retrohell for 80s horrors

also David Bowie's 95% $h!t as well (absolute beginners kinda alright) but the rest is total $h!t. why would anyone want to bother with that stuff i dont know? Jump they say is under-rated tho imo.

Everything But the girl - loads of jazzfunk and boho songwriter $h!t as well. send to 80s retrohell, stick to five fathoms, tempermental, walking wounded, single etc etc etc

however worst record of the 80 must be this:

this is not the number one song in heaven this is the number one song in retrohell

(based on biggest waste of talent)

Jump They Say was 93!

Bowie's 80s consisted of c**p basically from 84 til the end of the decade. Early part of the decade he put out some great songs:

Ashes to Ashes

Fashion

Cat People

Let's Dance

Modern Love (and some of the Let's Dance album)

Then there was the execrable Tonight which had one good song - Loving the Alien although Blue Jean was OK. I also liked This is Not America.

Then there was the rest of the tripe he put out (including Tin Machine) until the 90s and Jump They Say.

yeah exectly!! Bowie's 1980s total c**p. total bypass area (and let's dance omg Hi-Tack versh. hope people stick with roachford and betty boo)

also little wonder is under-rated imo

How about:

Don't Mean Nothin'

Right Here Waiting

both by Richard Marx
