Posted September 10, 200717 yr Defending champions Germany began their Women's World Cup campaign in style as they set a new record score for the tournament by crushing Argentina 11-0. Argentina keeper Vanina Correa fumbled in, before Kerstin Garefrekes' volley and Melanie Behringer's sidefoot. Birgit Prinz scored with a header and a shot before half-time, Renate Lingor smashed in, Sandra Smisek tapped in and Prinz's header completed her hat-trick. Smisek netted with a drive, then a tap-in, before Correa fumbled in again. It was never a contest as Germany underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites against an Argentina side ranked 29th in the world. But their ruthless display will have unnerved Germany's Group A rivals England and Japan who meet on Tuesday. Argentina began the match eager to erase the memories of losing 6-1 to Germany at the 2003 World Cup. But from the moment the hapless Correa managed to divert a corner kick into her own net after 11 minutes, it was clear this was going to be a nightmare for the Argentines. Garefrekes showed good control as she volleyed in on 17 minutes, while Correa allowed Behringer's sidefoot from a tight angle to slip by her seven minutes later. Prinz's emphatic header made the score 4-0 before the half-hour mark and in first-half injury-time she prodded home after being afforded acres of space inside the box. Remarkably, it could have been worse for Argentina as Sandra Minnert hit post with header shortly after the break, although it was a brief respite as Lingor hit a powerful shot home on 51 minutes. The first of Smisek's goals was easy as she tapped in from two yards after Correa tipped Lingor's free-kick on to a post. Prinz's second header completed her hat-trick moments later. Smisek drove in a beauty, then tapped in to match Prinz's individual tally, before the match ended as it began with another howler from Correa. from bbc sport Along with argentina and Germany, england also have Japan in their group who the play tomorow, the game will be live on BBC2
September 11, 200717 yr thats not to bad a result for england tbh this is there 1st world cup in a very long time, so if they can beat argentina and hope they lose by less to germany than japan do they would be through which would be great
September 12, 200717 yr Women playing football? Don't make me laugh. Im only joking by the way, Go england
September 22, 200717 yr EXCUSE MOI! England are playing the world #1's USA in the quarter finals BBC One now! Do your country proud and support them now! :cheer:
September 22, 200717 yr They did really good in the first half, but USA's superior gulf in class & fitness is telling in the second half as they are already 3-0 down to the World's Best Female Football team.
September 22, 200717 yr we did well to get to the Qtrs :cheer: considering we're mainly part time footballers who have other jobs outside of this footballing theatre at the World Cup. I think it's time we started proper training and gaining full time footballers to enable England to reach dizzier heights. If we can achieve this now, anything is possible beyond :D

September 22, 200717 yr The first thing should be to encourage girls to play football with boys and not stop them as currently happens. I'm against that. I think it's alright up to certain age but once you start getting to 11 or 12 I don't think it's right. On the whole boys are far physically stronger than girls and how ever good some of the girls may be at football they don't have the stength boys have.
September 22, 200717 yr The first thing should be to encourage girls to play football with boys and not stop them as currently happens. The England Women's team visited our school last year .... converted the boys who had laughed at the prospect of meeting them ..... they were skilled and fit. Oh and girls aren't stopped playing football, although mixed teams not allowed over 12 I think. Our school team regularly has girls in it - and the opposition always underestimate them ;) England did well, considering they were ranked 11th out of the 12!!!!!
September 22, 200717 yr There's no way mixed teams should ever be allowed. Football can be a very physical game. Throw a girl in and any man will be scared to tackle her like they usually would, cause her a serious injury and you can guarentee atleast someone will throw the term 'woman beater' around. <_<
