do you remember when shakira was spotted hanging out in LA and the rumours that circulated that its cause she is going to be an actress or she was sorting out her wedding well we now know its none of those she is in LA to attend university. in her time off from being a mega selling superstar she has enrolled in UCLA in california and is studying civilization history

 

a moderator from her website from her official forum said that some of his friends spotted her in the Uni already his old lecturer Robert Cleve is now teaching shakira's class.

 

i love this about shakira she is one of us, she never sets herself as being an icon or someone that should be worshipped. she is so grounded and humble one of us. is she the only female pop star to go to university? i'm glad she has depth and is feeding her brain. good luck with your essays!!

LOS ANGELES - Shakira may get high grades in singing and swiveling her hips, but what about ancient Western history?

 

For the past month, the Colombian pop star has been taking a class at the University of California, Los Angeles, called "Introduction to Western Civilization: Ancient Civilizations from Prehistory to Circa A.D. 843."

 

"She went when she finished her tour, for the summer," Shakira's manager Fifi Kurzman told The Associated Press.

 

For years the 30-year-old has studied on her own, also taking tutorials on the history and languages of the countries she visits, Kurzman said.

 

The singer, known for last year's "Hips Don't Lie" and other hits, released her first album at age 14 and later took time off to finish high school.

 

She decided to take a musical rest this summer following her worldwide "Oral Fixation" tour to focus on social causes, Kurzman said.

 

The class began Aug. 6 and ended Thursday, though Shakira didn't attended the last few classes, according to course lecturer Robert Cleve. Cleve said he hadn't known she was a celebrity during the course and was astonished to learn she was a pop star.

 

"She told me she was visiting from Colombia and that she was just doing this for her own enlightenment and enjoyment," Cleve said. "She looked like just an ordinary student. She wasn't flamboyant ... she didn't act like a big celebrity or anything."

 

Shakira, who sat near the front in the third row of the lecture hall, would often discuss the course material with him after class.

 

"I was really impressed with how intelligent she was," said Cleve.

I saw him last week on campus thanking him for replying to my email, and discuss shakira for a while:) I'm not trying to be nosy here or disrespectful to shakira in anyway. You must understand that I knew Shakira only as a student, not as a rock star or a celebrity, but I will tell you what I remember about her. She was quite perceptive and very intelligent. She seemed genuinely interested in the subject of ancient history. She occasionally posed questions during the lecture and often came up to the podium at break time or after class to discuss some aspect of the material that interested her. She was very courteous and patiently waited in line for her turn to speak with me---she even seemed a bit shy and I have since read that she once revealed to an interviewer that she was shy offstage (in fact, this is not unusual for entertainers, Johnny Carson being a good example). After several conversations with her I asked her if she was a history major. She said no, that she was just visiting California for the summer from Columbia and was taking the course for personal enjoyment.

 

I, of course, had never even heard of her and would never have recognized her even if she did not attempt to disguise herself, but I am surprised that none of the students recognized her. Her internet pictures show her with blond hair and glamorizing makeup. In class she had dark hair that somewhat shrouded her face. However, once I saw her image on the internet there is no mistaking that my student was Shakira. I am surprised she cold walk across campus so many times without being recognized.

 

The way she was dressed was anything but glamorous. As I told the reporters, she dressed like an ordinary student, which was my way of saying that wore the same ugly cloths that are so fashionable today. She wore no makeup which gave the impression that she was not concerned with her physical appearance. Yet, in spite of that she exuded a certain attractiveness, which I think stemmed from her personality rather than her appearance. I suppose that is what the promoters call "star quality."

and he prob looked at pics of her from the whenever wherever era when she use to wear more makeup and have blonde hair.. thus why she looked different.. students on the course prob didn't recognise her as they are doing a intense history course and i can't imagine that type of person listening to shakira :lol: and they wouldn't expect her to be there... so they'd think it was just a lookalike.

its like a first level course, she may do the next level. i'm surprised no one spotted her and took pictures of her to sell to the tabloids. she just blended in with the others no diva behaviour or special treatment that would bring attention to her. shakira the average student :coffee: i just remembered amerie also went to college before becoming a singer she is really intelligent. also natalie portman and the girl julia stiles i think both went to college while they were at the peak of their careers. i think so. get those degrees!!!

I never realised that about Amerie, but you can tell that she has a bit of something upstairs.

 

Shakira is blatantly really intellectual, but she must've never had a chance to take that route considering she's been recording since she was 13.

yeah amerie is like shakira, she has some brains along with talent and looks. i love it when you see people in the limelight do unusual things like feeding their minds with knowledge and not get sucked in by the superficiality of the entertainment business.

 

amerie's mum is the one that focused on how important it was to get an education over her singing plus her sister is a lawyer. she went to Georgetown University to study English Literature and Fine Arts. i reckon amerie has a high IQ too. i did notice in an interview i saw with her how amerie is articulate and well spoken. this is the article where i read she went to Uni....

natalie portman graduated from Harvard in 2003 with a degree in Psychology :o whoa Harvard!! that is tough to get into!!

 

julia stiles went to Columbia university did a degree in English

 

also there is a supermodel called christy turlington who took time away from earning millions to study philosophy and art history at New York University. i think shakira will continue to hire private tutors to teach her in subjects she is interested in. she said she wants to study art history so maybe that will be next.
