Foo Fighters heading for albums top spot

25 September, 2007

Source: MW

By Paul Williams

James Blunt’s run at number one on the albums chart looks like ending after just a week, with early sales data revealing that the newly-issued Foo Fighters album is outselling him by more than two units to one.

The band’s album Echoes Silence Patience & Grace, which is released in the UK through the Columbia Label Group, presently leads what could be four new entries in the Top 10 come the finalised chart this Sunday. Blunt’s second Warner album All The Lost Souls is the week-to-date’s second biggest seller, ahead of Ian Brown’s new Fiction/Polydor set The World Is Yours.

Island Records’ PJ Harvey and Universal Classics’ Ryandan also presently have newly-issued albums among the Top 10 sellers for the week, while Fightstar’s first Gut album One Day Son This Will Be Yours and Peace Frog’s new Jose Gonzalez album In Our Nature are on course for Top 20 debuts this weekend.

Other new entries to the Top 40 are also expected to include Shine, the first album by Joni Mitchell for the Starbucks-affiliated Hearmusic label.

On the singles chart former X Factor winner Shayne Ward faces a challenge from Sugababes to score his second number one hit. His Syco/RCA Label Group single No U hang Up/If That’s OK With You is presently ahead of the Island signings’ About You Now with both outselling last week’s number one, Beautiful Girls by Sean Kingston.

Another Sony BMG Elvis Presley re-issue, Hard Headed Woman, is vying for a Top 10 place some 49 years after it originally reached number two in the UK, while XL’s Jack Penate is looking to score a second Top 10 hit with Second Minute Or Hour.

The Penate hit is set for a double-digit chart climb thanks to a newly-issued physical format, as are Data/MoS’s Let Me Think About It by Ida Corr Vs Fedde Le Grand and Walt Disney’s High School Musical single You Are The Music In Me by Gabriella & Troy, which is released in the UK through EMI. Another Gabriella & Troy track, Gotta Go My Own Way, also looks likely to feature in this Sunday’s Top 40, while the cast of High School Musical could collectively figure with the track Everyday.

Meanwhile, If You Were A Sailboat, the lead-off single from Katie Melua’s third Dramatico album Pictures, is poised for a Top 40 debut, while Warner’s re-issue of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart will return the single to the chart for the first time in a dozen years. Originally a number 13 hit in 1980, it was first reactivated in 1995 when a remix reached number 19.

High School Musical 2 makes singles impact

26 September, 2007

Source: Music Week

By Martin Talbot

The High School Musical 2 soundtrack looks set for a massive impact on the singles rundown this weekend, with midweek data showing 10 tracks in the Top 75.

The Disney Channel movie, which screened for the first time last Friday night, has already produced one of the biggest compilations of the year, in the form of the soundtrack album – which will have sold more than 200,000 units after seven weeks on the chart by this coming Sunday. The first HSM album has also sold 780,000 units, including 240,000 this year alone.

Now, at least two tracks from that album look set to chart in the Top 40, led by You Are The Music In Me and Gotta Go My On Way, by characters Gabriella and Troy.

In addition, the tracks Everyday, I Dont Dance, Bet On It, Fabulous, What Time Is It, Work This Out, You Are The Music In Me and All For One are all vying to chart within the Top 75. Breaking Free, one of the main hits from the first movie, is also registering towards the bottom of the Top 200.

Elsewhere on the charts, the Foo Fighters look set enter the albums chart at one on Sunday, with over-the-counter sales likely to surpass the 118,000 achieved by James Blunt last week. In turn, Shayne Ward and Sugababes are battling to end Sean Kingston’s four-week run at the top of the charts.

That's a Sugababes song

I guess you never heard the classic track, Love Will Tear Us Apart, before your time, its also a name of a band.

I think one of the following 3 'S's will be number 1: Sean Kingston, Sugababes or Shayne Ward :D

Singles:

I reckon it could be close for no1 between 50cent, Sean Kingston and Shayne Ward, with Enrique, Sugababes and hopefully Leane and Gabrielle moving into the top 10 as well.

Albums:

1. Foo Fighters

2.James Blunt

I think the Suga's might get number 1
I've read that shops sold out yesterday of Shayne Ward's single as he was doing the signings, so it's looking the most likely no1 this week I think.

Sugababes will have to wait until next week to be No 1. Shayne Ward was sold out in every shop that sells singles that I was in yesterday... HMV, Virgin, Woolworths... and he wasn't doing any signings here. I hate to say this, but I think the personality-less pretty boy is a dead cert for the top spot..

I predict-

1. Shayne Ward

2. Sean Kingston

3. Sugababes

4. Plain White T's

I hope its Shayne though, he's bare buff and has a sick singing voice.

I wonder how that awful track will do from them in the sheilas wheels advert

That's a Sugababes song

Hang your head in shame....

Out of interest Mikey, which JD song is vying for the top 40 this week? Is it 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' again?
