21. ISRAEL 2005 - Shiri Maymon - Time To Say Goodbye

Shiri Maymon rose to fame in Israel as runner up of "A Star Is Born" (the Israeli version of Pop Idol), and went to Eurovision after winning by a landslide in her national selection. Despite initial resistance, she decided to sing half of "Hasheket Shenish'ar" in English, and after battling it out with other popular ballads, managed to finish 4th in Kiev after gathering 154 points and giving Israel its best result at Eurovision since Dana International seven years previously. She continues to have a successful singing and acting career in her native Israel, and her Eurovision song remains a fan favourite of recent years.

That's a great song. I regularly listen to that song still now throughout the year. :D One of very few 2005 songs I do.

It's grown on me in the years since the actual Contest, but I never noticed before that she's singing flat throughout that performance.
Shiri was sensational, her top 5 finish was well deserved  both the Israeli and English versions were really nice

20. RUSSIA 2007 - Serebro - Song Number One

Serebro were the surprise entry for Russia last year, who apart from lead singer Lena (who had competed in Russia's version of Fame Academy in 2003), were completely unknown. The song quickly became one of the favourites to win thanks to its contemporary feel, but many doubted the girls' singing ability due to the fact they didn't perform the song live at all until the week of the Contest. However, they pulled it out of the bag on the night, giving an energetic performance which brought them 207 points and 3rd place. The song reached number one in their home country, as well as the charts in Lithuania, Sweden, and the lower rungs of the UK chart, where it became an iTunes hit. The group are now one of the most popular in Russia, and won the award for Best Debut in the MTV Russia awards.

Brilliant song...I don't know the exact position it reached in the UK but it was around No.90 I think...

My second fave from last year

Excellent song. This song puts songs from groups like Girls Aloud and Sugababes to shame!

I remember asking Jo how many Girls Aloud videos they say. Her response - "All of them." (I agreed, but said I thought it would have only been the uptempo ones - i.e. not including songs like Life Got Cold or I'll Stand By You.)

I'm not too fond of the song, I love the video though!
Utterly fantastic song. Girls Aloud ought to cover it at some point!

Apologies everybody for never being bothered to finish this! Since the chart will be out of date in little over a week's time I may as well just reveal the rest of it now!

10. GREECE 2004 - Sakis Rouvas - Shake It

The song that elevated Greece to super-Euro-status! And also the song that started the trend of the majority of Greek entries since. Sakis Rouvas, already 32 years old when he represented Greece, is a bit of an all-rounder. Not just a singer-songwriter and TV presenter as familiar to most Eurovision fans, but also a model, film producer, actor, and pole-vaulter! Diverse! He was and is one of Greece's biggest stars, with "Shake It" becoming a huge hit in Greece, and a minor one in other countries. Its 3rd place finish with 252 points caused a surge in interest in the Contest in Greece, and he returned to present the Contest in 2006.

9. ESTONIA 2001 - Tanal Padar & Dave Benton - Come On Everybody

Not the most successful or most popular winning song of the 21st Century. Tanal Padar is quite famous in Estonia as frontman of The Sun, and Dave Benton had alot of experience, but this was their only project as a duo, apart from performing the song at the next Contest in Tallin! Most Eurofreaks consider this one of the weakest winners of all time, but statistically, this song actually won quite convincingly, picking up the 2nd biggest margin of possible votes this century. Their 198 points and Tanel Padar's subsequent local career are enough to get the song to 9th place, but it doesn't really have much going for it to elevate it higher.

I vaguely remember "everybody". I wish Georgia 2007 - Visionary dream was here but I doubt it, it totally deserves it though!

Oh and I was wondering.....when Tatu were entered for Russia I actually heard a rumour they were going to perform with no clothes on (or something close to it) :o

I know now that obviously wouldn't be allowed and I can't believe I actually believed it. (I was young and Hadn't a clue :P) Anyone else hear about that?

They spread that rumour themselves!

I demand commentary on these songs Peter :o You must take some time out on a Sunday and finish them all off properly :smoke::heehee:

8. ROMANIA 2006 - Mihai - Tornero

Here it is. The most successful Eurovision song of the 21st Century not to achieve a podium placing. "Tornero" finished 4th with 172 points, a position lower than Romania's previous effort, but it had some impact. With an amazing five octave vocal range, this summer anthem was a big fan favourite before the Contest, and managed to beat Eurovision divas Carola and Anna Vissi on the night, as well as becoming a massive summer hit afterwards. As well as his native Romania, "Tornero" was a hit in Scandinavia, as well as being the biggest Eurovision hit of the year in Greece (and trust me, having been there in Summer 2006, that year there were a fair few Eurovision smash hits!). The accompanying album made the European top 10, and he remains a bit star in Romania, having sold 1.5 million records.
