May 18, 200818 yr Author 7. LATVIA 2000 - Brainstorm - My Star Latvia's debut in 2000 was one of the Contest's most successful of all time, and they sent out the big guns! Brainstorm are one of the biggest bands in Latvia, having formed in 1989 and made it big in the early 90s. "My Star" was a unique indie style song and Renārs Kaupers' dancing certainly made it a memorable performance. The song remains a fan favourite, as does Renars, who returned to the Contest to present in 2003 from Riga, as well as taking on the role of presenter of "Congratulations," the 50th anniversary special, despite Latvia only having a 5 year history in the Contest. The song came 3rd in 2000 with 136 points and Brainstorm remain very successful in the Baltic states today. Eurovision Performance Ym_g5n4fpRw
May 18, 200818 yr Author 6. UKRAINE 2004 - Ruslana - Wild Dances Another successful debut at Eurovision was that of Ukraine, winning the whole thing in only its 2nd year. The multi-talented Ruslana (she is also a conductor!) shook up the Contest in 2004 to bring a far and away victory to Ukraine, with 280 points, at that time, the highest tally ever. Ruslana was a very big name in Ukraine at the time, with 5 albums under her belt, and her success became more widespread after the Contest. "Wild Dances" topped the charts in Ukraine, Greece and Belgium, and was also a big hit in Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and Germany, as well as making the European Top 20. She remains a huge star in Ukraine, with modest success in other territories, and "Wild Dances" is thought of as a Eurovision great of recent times - Germany voted it the best of all time in a 50th anniversary poll! May 19, 200818 yr Author While "Molitva" is at number 12...... 5. UKRAINE 2007 - Verka Serduchka - Dancing Lasha Tumbai There is always at least one Eurovision entry per year that you either love or hate. The thing is, most people loved this. The novelty act to end all novelty acts, drag queen Verka Serduchka took Europe by storm last year. "Tanzen" caused controversy in Ukraine, made headlines elsewhere, gained many fans in the run-up to the Contest, became the biggest pre-Contest favourite since Cliff Richard......and came 2nd....like Cliff Richard. Despite a performance that most will remember, even those who have tried to forget it, Verka could not topple Serbia's entry, and gained 235 points. Already a star in Ukraine, Verka Serduchka became a cult figure throughout Europe for a short time, especially in the UK, unheard of for a Eurovision entry! The single charted in UK, Ireland, Germany, France and Sweden among many others, and is Eurovision's most successful runner-up of the 21st Century. May 19, 200818 yr Ukraine got more that 197 points didn't they? I hated it at the time, don't mind it now though!
May 20, 200818 yr I can't stand it! I laughed when it got in the top 40 though! only selected ESC 2008 songs are on iTunes at the moment so we won't get many chart entries this time around... from what I can see Ireland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Greece, Croatia, France, San Marino, Romania and Bulgaria's songs are on iTunes now...
May 20, 200818 yr Author Ukraine got more that 197 points didn't they? I hated it at the time, don't mind it now though! Yes actually they did. Edited.
May 20, 200818 yr Author 4. DENMARK 2000 - The Olsen Brothers - Fly On The Wings Of Love This slightly old fashioned lighters in the air song was not expected to do much in the Contest, but it won by a landslide, and is considered a fan favourite of this Century, especially with those who have watched the Contest for many years. The song became a minor hit throughout Europe, and a major one in Denmark. However in 2003, a dance version by Spanish duo XTM became a smash hit all over the continent. The Olsen Brothers still have affection for the Contest, and have entered the Danish final, either together or seperately, a total of ten times to date, and are one of the all time greats in Denmark. May 20, 200818 yr Author Aren't you forgetting somebody Pavel....? 2. GREECE 2005 - Helena Paparizou - My Number One Greece were the far and away favourites and the far and away victors in 2005, and Greece's debut victory has ensured that Helena Paparizou remains one of Greece's biggest stars, as well as having success in Scandinavia. "My Number One" won with 230 points and 10 maximum votes (a record shared with Katrina), went platinum in Greece and gold in Sweden, as well as making the top ten in Belgium, Romania, Netherlands and Hungary, and charting in several other territories. It made the Euro Top 20, and perhaps most impressively, #7 in the dance chart in America. "My Number One" has been officially voted the 4th best Eurovision song of all time, and while this vote took place the year she won, it should not be taken lightly! Eurovision Performance pWe0nKho8DI
