Its such a sad story and something I've been following for YEARS, Aung San Suu Kyi is a real hero of mine and a rather wonderful woman.

The fact that all protests have been quelled now because the Junta have had all the Monks locked up just shows how bad the situation is.

The fact China refuses to do anything to condemn the situation is terrible too imo, its all good and well saying a difference of governing/ethos's but standing by whilst a group of people murder others is just well...wrong.

Myanmar election: Suu Kyi's NLD wins landslide victory

Before today I had heard of Suu Kyi's name but had no idea of her back story or the situation in Myanmar, but once I read this article I delved deeper into lots of articles and information and this afternoon I watched 'The Lady' which I'm sure many of you know is a biographical film of Suu Kyi that was released in 2011.

Of course the military unfortunately still have a lot of influence, but for Suu Kyi's party to have won is a massive step I'm sure and now knowing Suu Kyi's back story, she is an absolute inspiration and the courage of her as well as her family have shown over the years is so admirable. I'd really recommend watching 'The Lady' too if anyone has yet to see it, as it really puts the importance of this victory into context.

The coming months and years will be a real test for both Aung San Suu Kyi and the military. The military need to respect the overwhelming verdict of the electorate, but ASSK needs to be wary of deliberately provoking them.

Ultimately, of course, the constitution will need to be changed. However, the military have granted themselves a veto over any proposed changes. At some point, that veto has to be removed.

Sensible comments and change should come albeit slowly to prvent the militaryover reacting or getting an excuse to ignore democracy again. The rest of the world could help...
