October 2, 200717 yr Wonderful week So happy for YUI, she seems to be at a career peak, and well deserved. I thought BoA would sell more, but I guess she's old news in japan now. I wouldn't say Ayus second week figures are that bad, I mean she could have done worse. If i'm being honest I can never see her regaining her past glory, i'm just waiting for the moment when she doesn't reach #1, and judging by T2M sales, it won't be long.. Ai! Wonderful album, even though it's short, it's concise, it flows well, and it's brilliant. Never really been a Shiina/Tokyo Jihen fan, but other than that [and Will.I.Am] the album chart is awesome. Angela held up well, BOOWy has an album in top 10, Ketsumeishi still selling madly and FF make a good entry. Poor PUFFY @ #27 :( There isn't a lot to interest me this week, blatantly B'z will be #1, hope Mika Nakashima charts well also Edited October 2, 200717 yr by Exodus
October 3, 200717 yr YUI's "Love & Truth" is 28th consecutive number one with only 1 week at the top. It's a second result in history. 40 consecutive songs with only one week at #1 were between May 1986 - February 1987. 39 consecutive songs at the top were between May 2006 - March 2007 but two of them spent 2 non consecutive weeks at #1.
October 3, 200717 yr Author I thought BoA would sell more, but I guess she's old news in japan now. I wouldn't say Ayus second week figures are that bad, I mean she could have done worse. If i'm being honest I can never see her regaining her past glory, i'm just waiting for the moment when she doesn't reach #1 ..."Glitter / Fated" was Ayu's first single release for more than a year and I suspect the sales benefited from that. The sales figures for the last 6 No.1's tell a story: 2007-08-29 - Keisuke Kuwata - Kaze no Uta wo Kikasete - 93,312 2007-09-05 - L'Arc~en~Ciel - My Heart Draws a Dream - 112,607 2007-09-12 - Arashi - Happyness - 192,196 2007-09-19 - KinKi Kids - Eien ni - 190,495 2007-09-26 - Auymi Hamasaki - talkin' 2 myself - 70,325 2007-10-03 - Yui - Love & Truth - 87,491 It looks to me as if the era when rival record labels were willing to give Ayu a clear run on the grounds that she was 'unbeatable' ought now to end. I almost feel sorry for BoA, not breaking 30k and being beaten into third by some unsavoury rocker. There's nothing really wrong with "Love Letter". It's just another slightly ponderous ballad in a style that she has already done to death, but no worse that it's predecessors. The most recent of her Avex releases that I really enjoyed was "Brand New Beat ~nanairo no a$h!ta~". Other than that, the BoA tracks which have stood the test of time are early recordings she did with SM Entertainment at the start of her career. Songs like "Sara", "Atlantis Princess" and "Milky Way". It currently seems her personal support is withering even faster than Ayu's. That said, I'm certainly not about to write her off. I quite expect her to take on a new lease of life at some stage, but it does seem to be time for a rethink. Simply following the Avex formula isn't working the way it once did. Time, maybe, to return to Korea and do some more work with the people who made her famous in the first place?
October 3, 200717 yr Will.I.Am might of sold more copies in Japan than he did in th rest of the world combined  Good sales for Foos ^_^
October 3, 200717 yr Top 30 for international single! Backstreet Boys' "Inconsolable" debut this week at #29. Their sold 4,613 copies. http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51-jMKHPuzL._AA240_.jpg
October 3, 200717 yr I always enjoy BoA songs/albums, even though I wouldn't say she's one of my favourite artists, she's really consistent in bringing out good music. Unfortunately [just like Ayu] she isn't really a comodity anymore. OUTGROW is an awesome R&B album, although I have to say my favourite song of hers is VALENTI. I always wonder if her or Ayu could come back in a Namie type way, but I really couldn't imagine them changing there sounds. I hope your right about BoA though, she is a genuinely talented girl. I could actually imagine her doing some sort of dance style music, hopefully she'd have more succes than Suzuki Ami with it though, I watched her performance at a-nation the other day and it's quite sad, such a fall from grace :( I've never really listened to her Korean releases, but i'll have to check it out, i've been meaning to check out some other K acts lately as well, like Super Junior and THSK. On another note, how long do you think Ayu can keep her #1 streak? I hope she can reach 20, and I think Avex will try to find dead weeks for her. However, i'm expecting it sooner rather than later.. October 4, 200717 yr Author On another note, how long do you think Ayu can keep her #1 streak? ...I'm not sure I see how long as the key issue. Neither of Ayu's two most recent singles have sold in sufficient quantities to 'guarentee' the No.1 position, although on each occassion, the sales were enough within the context of the week of issue. "Beautiful World / Kiss & Cry" has comfortably outsold both of Ayu's recent singles despite not reaching No.1. The margin "Glitter / Fated" had over the Porno Grafitti track that came in at No.2 wasn't that great, and although "talkin' 2 myself" outsold last week's Tohoshinki offering, it was well short of the sales of their previous No.2 hit - "Summer Dream" outsold twenty of this year's No.1's on first week sales (including "Glitter / Fated"). Ayu is no stranger to not being No.1 (thirteen of her singles haven't made the top) and at the end of the year, Avex are going to put a heavier weighting on revenue than on chart statistics. Clearly, quite soon now we are going to see an Ayu single not reach the top, but I think who beats her is the main point of interest. If Porno Grafitti had pulled it off two months ago, I doubt many people would have been that bothered. They make a completely different style of music and appeal to a very different type of audience. But think of the ignominy of loosing the top spot to someone like, say, Erika Sawajiri or even (heaven forbid) Leah Dizon. When she looses out to another female pop singer it will be the end of an era.
October 4, 200717 yr Is their loads of female solo artisits in Japan?? they seem to always be at No.1?!
October 4, 200717 yr I think you're right in saying that who beats Ayu will make a lot of difference to her reputation. I mean if it was someone like Leah Dizon or Erika then it really would spell out the end of an era. However, i think if she lost out to a band like THSK or someone who should be less popular than her would end her reign quite bluntly. Even when she hasn't reached #1 in the past, she's had extrodinarily high sales [bar A song for XX singles] but now even her #1's can't pull that off. There always seems to be a discussion about the 'Queen Of JPop' and imo there isn't one atm. All the previous such as Ayu & BoA are fading, people like Utada aren't really 'pop' and release quite sporadicly, Koda Kumi who seems to be losing momentum [No way will her next album outsell Black Cherry] and then a bunch of newcomer females who may be popular [a la YUI] but never popular enough to demand the term 'Queen.'
