Farley's rusks.

Well, ok...not one of the best years really. There was The Clash's lacklustre second album 'Give Em Enough Rope' and, I think, very early Human League stuff...but not much else comes to mind.

unlike richie i always considered 1978 to be a seminal year where the new sounds from the previous year (punk and disco) became of age and spread out new sounds in many directions.

the variety of music and the quality makes '78 one of the best years for pop music.

3 of my very best favs were

kate bush................... wuthering heights

squeeze..................... take me im yours

p.i.l........................... public image

id also like to mention ian dury and the blockheads who probably peaked in this year. certainly 'rhythm stick' was a masterpiece of pop music.

Well, there you go. He's bang on the money there.
Its the year. I first bought my first ever single on 7inch vinyl, The Police Message In A Bottle.

Sorry to be picky ,Mikey, but that came out in 1979 , didn't it ?

Looking back I regard 1978 as start of a golden era of music (1978-1984) within the mainstream, mainly thanks to young Post-Punk New Wave acts breaking through to the charts with less rubbish filling up the remainder of the Top40 as a result.

Whilst it was the breakthrough year of Britain's Greatest ever female singer songwriter "The Mighty" Kate Bush.

OK, Kate isn't the greatest ever British female singer-songwriter IMO (include her werid voice here) ^_^

i dont think youll get much agreement m8! lol.. who do you think is then?

1978 was a brilliant year for music, and as has been said about, the start of a golden age (for me) of music, 1978 to 1984/5.

I bought my first 12" single in 1978, it was Cold As Ice by Foreigner! I ended the year buying my second favourite song of all time, Le Freak by Chic, on a 12" which I actually still have, one of a small amount of singles that I can't part with.

It was the year I became a teenager, and it's probably the year I consider that I "grew up". Certainly, when I think back to how I thought and acted in January 1978 and compare this to how I was in December 1978 it feels like those two months were separated by years not just 11 months. It was also the year that I discovered girls weren't just annoying little brats but had their good points too :D.
