Coronation Street's Vera Duckworth is to die in a tear-jerking New Year plotline, it has been revealed.

Liz Dawn – who has played Vera for 33 years – will film her final scenes with the ITV soap at the end of the year.

Three alternative death scenes have been written, but filming of only one script will take place in a closed-set environment and viewers will only learn of her fate when the episode airs in January.

The decision to kill off such an iconic character came after long, extensive meetings between Corrie's executive producer Kieran Roberts, producer Steve Frost and Liz herself.

It was decided that an emotional and dramatic finale for the character would be far more justifiable than her leaving the Street and returning for the odd re-appearance throughout the ensuing years.

Of the decision, Steve Frost said: "After discussions with Liz Dawn we have settled on a heart-breaking exit story which will see Vera leave Coronation Street in 2008.

"Liz's contribution to Coronation Street has been quite remarkable. She has played Vera, one of the most-loved characters on British television, for 33 years and she will be missed enormously, by everyone who works with her on the show and by millions and millions of viewers.

"It has been a great privilege to work with Liz and I wish her a very happy and very well-deserved retirement.”

Liz commented: "It is going to be very emotional filming Vera’s death scenes but I do think it is the right decision for the character.

"Steve Frost and Kieran Roberts were very respectful about how I would feel about Vera dying and we talked about it at length before we made the final decision.

She added: "I have had 33 marvellous years in Coronation Street and will miss everyone very much."

Liz announced her decision to quit in July due to her ailing health.

Todays episode was alright ^_^ looking forward to the wedding. The puppy is well cute and I found Darryl funny tonight :(

The puppy is so adorable!

I like Sarah and think its a shame that she is leaving. =[

I agree

It will be really different without Sarah, also Vera.

Having said that though, I've not really missed Mike or Fred :(

I thought I would miss Fred, but I havent.

Looking back, he was a very over rated character.

Tina O' Brien is a good actress, but I'm afraid she is just another girl who wants to go to Hollywood but she will fail.

November Spoilers

As we head into November, we can guarantee that there’ll be fireworks on the Street.

Here’s some sparkling Corrie storylines which are set to raise the heat on the cobbles over the next few weeks.

The flames of passion flicker at the Mortons’ bonfire party when Cupid targets two former lovers. But why does the new couple upset Sean?

Also at the bonfire party, Sarah Platt is horrified when she sees the clothes that the bonfire guy has been dressed in.

Over at the Websters’, there’s a wicked web of deceit as John’s fling with Rosie gets out of hand.

In the Rovers, is Liz’s reign as Queen Bee behind the bar over when another woman moves in?

Liam leaves the Street this month, but don’t worry, he’s only popping over to Ireland for another holiday. But is there someone other than Maria who misses him while he’s away?

There’ll be shock news for the factory boss when he returns, and it’ll mean more responsibility than a little puppy… Meanwhile Carla gets a proposition - and a nasty surprise.

The Peacocks’ are set for more marital turmoil when Claire starts to assert her independence.

And in the Kabin there are more troubles of the heart when Norris takes an interest in a lady of a certain age.

And finally this month, a Street regular leaves for London, a new character arrives when Violet’s sister turns up, and a familiar face returns to the Street after a few years away.

But will anyone be pleased to see this rover return?
