well i think u all will like it! It was very good.
I did like it!!! Really exciting and technically amazing. But honestly it wasn't as good as the original. Be sure to see it Allysa, it's been on AMC a lot lately.

Another pointless remake.... <_< People are talking all about the CGI and the technical effects, what about the actual human drama, which was the element which was vital to the original.... I don't hear any talk of the actors either (mind you, who could you possibly cast to replace Gene Hackman and Shelley Winters....?).

Sounds like another empty vessel making a lot of noise to me.....

The problem is as much as I love the original, its individual character plots were not only cheesy but that whole idea has become a disaster movie cliche. The actors in the remake are good but the script doesn't really give them a chance to act... as opposed to the original which of course is WAY overacted. Peterson had to try to make the movie more modern but what people love about the original is its 70's charm. So basically, it probably shouldn't have even been made.

No offence, but that's a silly statement, it wasn't a cliche when it was actually made.... You're talking about the early 70s here, and of course things made then seem a bit camp now, mainly because of things such as "Airplane" and the like; oh, and of course thanks to Postmodernism, we're all-so-cleverer now aren't we, all so very knowing (yeah, right, like "Scream" is a better film than "Halloween", I think not...)...? Of course the whole 70s disaster film cycle was a tad full of itself and rather portenteous, but at the end of the day you still have to respect films like "Poseidon Adventure" because they were really the first attempts at this sort of whole 'event movie' idea, and franky I'd rather watch "Poseidon.." than absolute 90s rubbish like "Daylight", "Armageddon" or "Deep Impact" anyday...

As silly as the original may have been, it was certainly a damn sight better than the godawful sequel with Michael Caine ("Beyond The Poseidon Adventure")

Started watching this last night but got tired so will see the rest of it tonight, from what I have seen so far though I will not rush out and buy the official DVD when it comes out

Right, thats exactly my point, it has BECOME a cliche because of the glut of 70's disaster flicks. A movie made today with the script of the original Poseidon Adventure would be panned. Although I guess it doesn't really matter in this case because Peterson's "updated" version was panned too.

Poseidon and Airport were fantastic, but by the genre deteriorated very quickly. Two years later...Towering Inferno for Best Picture? Yeah right. And Earthquake was pretty bad. Then, as you say, the sequels came soon after. Airplane! definitely played a role but I also think they doomed the genre themselves (looking at you Irwin Allen!).

"Towering Inferno" was okay, but it suffered from being about a half hour too long, it didn't actually win best film though, it only got nominated (mind you, it probably shouldn't even have been nominated.. ), it only actually won a few technical awards. "Earthquake" was pretty bloody dire, but not as c**p as "Avalanche"....  . Yes, Irwin Allen does have a lot to answer for....

I've seen far worse scripts made into films than "Poseidon Adventure" - "Armageddon"'s script was fukkin' woeful, as was "Pearl Harbour" and "The Island". In fact, just about anything involving Michael Bay seems to suck major ass in an Irwin Allenesque way......

Now THIS looks good! :D

I love films about mass destruction, The Day After Tomorrow, Armageddon, Twister etc.

  • 4 months later...

I finally got round to seeing this tonight. ^_^

Was a bit of a let down though. :( I normally like these sorts of films but well I just found this a little bit too predictable. :( I've never the best a guessing whose gonna kop it in films but I guessed right each charchter that did eventually kop it, whould kop it. :( The special effects were good though and everything but yeah I just found it just a tad too predictable. :(

Not really my type of film. Too many effects in these remakes.

I thought it was tripe myself, totally lacking the human drama of the original film, and none of the actors could top Gene Hackman's performance in the original... I just didn't give a sh!t about any of the characters to be honest... Like you say, way too much reliance on CGI.....

I gave a $h!t about the charchters, even that drunk that got crushed by something fell on him. Its just I could tell who was gonna kop it. :( I mean I haven't seen the original but the bit were that woman's dad "saves" them all and then dies, is exactly the same to Armageddon apart from the fact there on a boat and Armageddon was set on a spacecraft.

think its one of those films that i might end up with if it was £3 or in a 5 for 3 kinda offer. was alright

Thought it was a heap of $h!t tbh, 4/10 at best. Original was a classic maybe thats why I hate this version same as I hated the "remake" of Italian Job simply because the original is one of my fave movies of all time
i saw this with my girlfriend and we both agreed that it was the biggest pile of $h!t we had watched in ages.
