xenophobia is inherant in every race...always has been throughout history all around the world. is it any wonder when foreign invastions are ALWAYS to the detriment to the native populations.. in fact, historically id suggest that the anglo-saxon settlement here in the 4th-7th centuaries where possibly the ONLY influx of 'foreigners' (though in truth there was a large movement of peoples throughout celtic times and most of europe are related) that had long term benefits for the indiginous peoples....

The actions of the IRA had bugger all to do with racism or xenophobia, and far MORE to do with Ireland first being colonised by the English and later split into two by the British Govt.... I happen to totally agree with the sentiment that Ireland should be all one country, I didn't particularly go along with the methods of the IRA, but I do broadly support the republican cause; the split was as unnatural as the split of North and South Korea and East and West Germany, it was done purely for political reasons....

 

And I can understand the anger of the Welsh as well, absentee landlordism is/was a huge problem for my country also, again, I would not say it was particularly racist....

id like that actually, im interested. i dont claim to be 'pure anglo saxon'... i doubt if theres any such thing after a thousand years of inter-breeding. my surname though is 'old english' (saxon) so i expect that a large part of my dna originates in northern europe.

it would be somewhat foolhardy for anyone to think that they are 'pure' anything, indeed the anglo-saxons themselves were not a 'pure' race therefore theres no such thing as 'pure' anglo-saxon. however, i think that if someone can trace back their family tree for 200 odd years or more, then its pretty likely that they are 'english', from mainly anglo-saxon stock.... especially if their surname derives from old english (ie saxon).

 

and this is what we mean by 'englishness', its not so much about dna, as ancestory, our ancestors who created 'england', the place names, field systems, society, innovation, the longevity of life in our villages, farming the land that was fought for by our forfathers. we are who we are because of what our ancestors did and the world they created and passed on. i have a great deal of respect and awe for the people who created my england, the country i see today. england might not be perfect, but i sure as hell wouldnt want to have been born anywhere else!

Your final statement explains perfectly why I think the whole concept of being proud to be English (or whatever) is a nonsense. Most of us do not achieve our nationality. We acquire it through accident of birth. I take pride in my own achievements (some of them anyway :P ), not something in which I had no say whatsoever.

You've misinterpreted my point. Of course I've voted (on every possible occasion) and I've protested. I've served as a local councillor. However, I had no say in the fact that I was born English. It just happened that way.
