These were the great years for me. But the charts only partially reflected this. It was a great time for punk and post punk, 2-Tone and mod, early electronica, etc, but not much of it made the chart.

A few non-charting records I like from Oct/Nov 79 that immediately spring to mind:

The Cure - Jumping someone elses's train

Fad Gadget - Back to nature

Killing Joke - Nervous system

The Plastics - Copy

Psychedelic Furs - We love you

The Vapors - Prisoners

Wire - Map ref 41N 93W

Doll By Doll - Teenage lightning

4 Be 2 - One of the lads

The Lurkers - New guitar in town

The Passions - Hunted

Suicide - Dream baby dream

The Tours - Tourist information

And so on…

Which chart do you use, Rob?

"Eton Rifles" only got to No.3 in the official chart.

http://www.everyhit.com/retros/index.php

dunno where they get their chart from but it gives a good enough flavour of the music of the time.

let me know if you have any retro chart sites, ill put them in the 'resource'. :)

For anyone that likes to actually listen to retro charts, on radio...On KCFM (available on line), On Sundays 5pm - 7pm Shaun Tilley and a dj from the past, countdown 2 vintage Radio Luxembourg charts (60s - 90s). Its much better, and faster moving than Radio 2`s Winton show.

Hull, Jonny!

Hull, Jonny!

I was right then  What A shame I have no intrest in Retro Charts eh

I think the everyhit charts are based around the official charts, perhaps using charts over two or three weeks and averaging them out.

a few comments...

1 Dr Hook........................ When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman

pretty poor, I don't detest it as some do but still quite a rubbish record

2 The Jam........................ Eton Rifles

Loved the group, loved the song and I liked the album from which this song comes

3 Queen ...........................Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Good song, a return to form for Queen

4 The Commodores........... Still

Hated this song, Lionel Richie sounds like he is singing with a peg on his nose! Insipid and sickly

5 Lena Martell ...................One Day At A Time

Oh no! One of the worst number ones of all time. My mother already owned this song, in a version by an Irish singer called Gloria which apparently had sold several thousand on import prior to Martell covering the song.

6 Donna Summer & Barbra Streisand ........No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)

Didn't mind this song, but I just don't like much that features the warbly voice of Streisand

7 Abba .............................Gimme Gimme Gimme

Didn't like it and wasn't an Abba fan

8 BA Robertson .................Knocked It Off

Didn't like this either, I thought BA Robertson was a smug (and awkward) looking person!

9 Specials ft Rico.............. A Message To You Rudy / Nite Klub

Excellent! Preferred Nite Klub to AMTYR and back then I bought everything on 2 Tone

10 Selecter ......................On My Radio

see above! I owned the record and later bought the album

11 Kool & The Gang ..........Ladies Night

"Classic" disco record which was OK but grated on me after a while

12 The Ramblers ..............The Sparrow

They don't make songs like this anymore... thankfully. Bizarrely the song became a terrace favourite at St James Park (Newcastle United) though with slightly amended lyrics...

13 Madness ......................One Step Beyond

Another great, good time, ska influenced record that I owned!

14 Suzi Quatro .................She's In Love With You

In 1974 I couldn't get enough of Suzi Q - in 1979 I wanted to get rid of her from the radio - quite rubbish song...

15 Sad Cafe .....................Every Day Hurts

Nice song, and one that reminds me of this era.

16 Fleetwood ....................Mac Tusk

I bought this record but soon went off it - it's OK but I have to be in the mood to listen to it.

17 Viola Wills ...................Gonna Get Along Without You Now

Terrible song, not much else to say!

18 Herb Alpert ..................Rise

I had this on clear vinyl 12" and loved it. Still do.

19 The Isley Brothers ........It's A Disco Night (Rock Don't Stop)

I had this on 12" too, bought with winnings I had on a Ladbrokes football coupon (where you have to guess the result of a game in 8 or so sections on the coupon). I was too young to go into a betting shop, my dad put the bet on for me and I won £8!

20 Iris Williams................. He Was Beautiful (Cavatina)

Urgh!

21 Matchbox .....................Rockabilly Rebel

My sister liked Matchbox and bought this single. Little sisters can be so irritating...

22 Dynasty....................... I Don't Want To Be A Freak

another 12" single I bought with my underage gambling winnings. I was mercilessly skitted at school for buying this more than any other disco song I bought. Most of my mates were into rock music so I managed to convince them I bought it for the B side (which handily was called Your Piece Of The Rock)...

23 Electric Light Orchestra.. Confusion / Last Train To London

LTTL was OK, Confusion was terribly bland and ELO had faded from the glory of 1977/78 to produce some dull songs in 1979 - and got worse in 1980.

24 The Gibson Brothers ......Que Sera Mi Vida

Cuba was fine, this wasn't. It sounded quite harsh and badly produced to me

25 Dan-I ...........................Monkey Chop

"Monkey come chop banana". Er yes...

26 XTC............................. Making Plans For Nigel

I like it now but wasn't too keen in 1979, I thought they were trying to be a clever band, too clever in fact, at the time..

27 Errol Dunkley................ OK Fred

"OK Fred now I'm a yaga yaga". Competing with Dan I for "song with the most sensible lyrics".

28 The Moody Blues ...........Nights In White Satin

Timeless and beautiful and re-entered the charts following The Dickies cover version a couple of months earlier

29 Thin Lizzy..................... Sarah

Pleasant song. Not to be confused with Sara by Fleetwood Mac which soon arrived, though the FM song was much better (and better than Tusk)

30 The Boomtown Rats....... Diamond Smiles

Not a particularly good record by The Rats. I'd bought all their singles and the Tonic album in 1978 but didn't like "Monday" so never bothered with that, nor this, nor the album. The next single Someone's Looking At You was better and I bought that in January 1980.

31 Secret Affair .................Let Your Heart Dance

Good song, not as good as Time For Action but still enjoyable

32 Earth Wind & Fire ..........Star

This was released due to popular demand as it was a massive floor filler in discos but it seemed quite plain and nothing special to me. The follow up single Can't Let Go was better, I bought that on Christmas Eve 1979, along with London Calling by The Clash...

33 The Tourists................. I Only Want To Be With You

The Tourists were seen as a bit of a joke, though The Loneliest Man In The World was good. This wasn't...

34 The Buggles .................Video Killed The Radio Star

The first time I heard this was the day it entered the top 40 and after hearing everyone raving about it. I thought it was OK but soon grew to like it, especially when the first beat came in (sounded great through those new fangled stereo speakers I had!). A year to the month they released a song called Elstree (Remember Me) and apparently no-one remembered them at all as it crawled to #55...

35 Gary Numan ................Complex

Dreary song from an act I could never understand the appeal of. Admittedly I had Are "Friends" Electric and Cars but those were great songs but his voice annoyed. Another act (see Lionel Richie, above) who seemed to have sinus trouble, this time sounding like he was pinching his nose as he sang.

36 Cats UK .......................Luton Airport

Awful, simply awful. I flew from Luton Airport in 1988 and it was an experience that actually was worse than the experience of listening to this song!

37 The Dooleys ................The Chosen Few

Wanted aside, this group were truly terrible...

38 Robert John .................Sad Eyes

A US #1, typical US adult oriented music, bland but inoffensive

39 Michael Jackson ...........Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

I bought the 12" of this too, loved it at the time but now can't stand it.

40 Chic ............................My Forbidden Lover

And I had the 12" of this too, in fact from Le Freak I bought the 12" of each song they released but by now they were a group in decline. Nice song but their popularity was in decline, both in the UK and in the US
