Posted November 16, 200717 yr (try again) any fans? often over-shadowed by the beatles, this seminal r&b group scored many hits in the 60's with a superb and unique sound. as time has gone on, it seems to me that the stones are being largely forgotten dispite their music being used on tv in adverts etc. my fav stones tracks are the beat-thumping ones... 'not fade away' , 'lets spend the night together', and my fav is 'paint it black'. now the stones have a 'best of - greatest hits' out i think the latest crop of 'indie' kids should go out and get it.... imho theres not many 'indie' bands past or present who can touch them.
November 16, 200717 yr The Rolling Stones were a great band. Some of the material they come up with in the mid/late 1960s to 1972 was fantastic. Their run of albums from 1968 (Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Your Ya Yas Out, Sticky Fingers & Exile On Main Street) to 1972 are outstanding, but afterwards their material went into a steady decline where they have become little more than a glorified golden oldies act (see also Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Who & to a lesser extent Paul McCartney & David Bowie) who every now or then make a pretty decent album. However, they've lost a hell of a lot of good will in the industry via their over-zealous promotion that makes them as bad as the Spice Girls. They've been more than happy to allow any Tom, Dick Or Harry advertiser to use their music for adverts provided the price is right in stark contrast to Bowie, McCartney, Led Zep, Pink Floyd (except Richard Wright). But far worse has been their hypocritical behaviour with regards lawsuits on newer acts "ripping off" their music. Back in their prime they were more than happy to rip off old blues songs by the likes of Robert Johnson and pass them off as their own. Yet they were happy to take the Verve to the cleaners with regards "Bitter Sweet Symphony" ripping off "The Last Time" or suing and winning 50% of the royalties off of Primal Scream "Loaded" ("Sympathy For The Devil") and Semisonic's "Secret Smile" ("Miss You") and there have been others.
November 16, 200717 yr Author lol.. this is a stones APPRECIATION thread m8... mind you, i have to agree, they are hypocritical, its not as if they need the money and im not so sure the tracks were that much of a rip-off were they?... did the dandy warhols get away with it? (bohemian like you - brown sugar sample)
November 16, 200717 yr I was brought up on The Stones by my Daddy, heard all their albums only really got one album myself and that's 'Sticky Fingers' I still ADORE 'Dead Flowers', I want the Greatest Hits if I have enough money left this weekend I'll get it, I like their songs and it will bring back some good memories of listening to them with my Dad :) Altho he played 'Satifaction' to death! He did when it first came out but I got 40 Licks for him ages ago and that just started it right back up again, he's got all the orignals on vynal(can't spell lol) and his turn table packed up ages ago (actually it didn't I pinched the speakers but we've just never got round to replacing them lol).
November 16, 200717 yr I must admit to really liking the Stones, especially their 60's and early 70's stuff. Already got 2 greatest hits collections of their's so doubt I would by the new one :D
November 17, 200717 yr I like a lot of the Stones' music, though they'll always be second best to The Beatles to me. I even like some of their 70s and 80s stuff, but part of the problem with The Stones, the thing that often leads to them being overlooked (I'm not sure if I would say they were "forgotten") is the fact that they just never went away. The Beatles split in 1970 and their body of work can be looked at as having a start and a finish (leaving aside the likes of the Anthology series) but with The Stones it is more a case of they are a group who perhaps outstayed their welcome, faded as time went by and they are really just living on past glories. Had they split in the 70s time may have been more kinder to them...
November 17, 200717 yr Stones were great until 1972, I think that's generally the accepted view. After that they became a cash-cow to give the members an un-needed cash injection. Some of their recent legal cases include taking 100% of the royalties to both 'After the Watershed' by Carter for cheekily steeling the lyrics and melody to 'Ruby Tuesday' and 100% of the royalties to The Verve's 'Bittersweet Symphony' for a string sample they didn't even write. They are the consumate 'major' band - appropriate them at your peril...but they were great...35 years plus ago.
November 17, 200717 yr As someone who has every studio album of them and also every album of Keith Richards naturally I am a massive fan of theirs
November 20, 200717 yr I got the album but they miss off Start me up :( 40 Licks is by far better for the hits.
November 20, 200717 yr But far worse has been their hypocritical behaviour with regards lawsuits on newer acts "ripping off" their music. Back in their prime they were more than happy to rip off old blues songs by the likes of Robert Johnson and pass them off as their own. Yet they were happy to take the Verve to the cleaners with regards "Bitter Sweet Symphony" ripping off "The Last Time" dont know if it was them or not really but i thought it was not them but Andrew Loog Oldham and allen klein of abcko record company as they didnt actually sample the rolling stones but the Andrew Loog Oldham orchestra versh and those two sued because the stones dont have any rights overtheir back cat from the 60s and thats why all these 60s compilation get coming out over and over again. its all their fault these greedy manager dudes!!!! btw might have been the stones in this case http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/pop_artists/P06635N2T9D.JPG and talking about jim morrisons, stones are alright, but prefer the doors. often over-shadowed by the beatles, this seminal r&b group omg it would be sooo cool to see a rolling stones thread in the r&b secvtion next to all the amerie ones   someone really really pedantic please start one  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/88/1_Thing.jpg
