November 21, 200717 yr I recently did a lot of research about the UK's Fastest Selling Albums. The OCC Top 10 - in one of the Posts on this Thread - is CORRECT. This means that the Wikipedia Page needs to have the following Albums added to its Top 10 - I give their 1st Week Sales in Brackets:, A) At No.7 - Rattle & Hum - U2 - 1988 (360,000) B) At No.8 - Bad - Michael Jackson - 1987 (350,000) C) At No.10 - The Immaculate Collection - Madonna - 1990 - (340,000) Oasis - WTSMG - remains at No.9 OUT of the Top 10, (at Wikipedia) should go:, 1) Greatest Hits - Robbie Williams 2) By Request - Boyzone 3) 1 - The Beatles 'BE HERE NOW' - The Wikipedia figures, for its first 'Week' on Sale is wrong. It is 32,372 too many. It actually sold 663,389, in those 3 Days - Thursday, Friday, & Saturday. They have the correct figure at Everyhit, & The OCC have confirmed that 663,389 is right. It sold 813,000 in its first 7 Days on Sale - but spread over 2 Chart Weeks....It IS No.1 as regards the UK's Fastest Selling Album - it gained the record in 3 Days - let alone its first 7 Days. (In fact - it sold 356,000 on its FIRST Day, alone!). As I said, The OCC Top 10 - in this Thread - is 100% right. Why so many of the Albums are from the 1990's & 2000's? ANSWERS:, 1) In the 1960's, 1970's, & the 1980's, there were far less places to buy Albums. You certainly could not buy them in ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's, etc, in those Days - you had to go into Record Stores. 2) There were far fewer Stores like HMV, & far fewer branches of those Record 'Chain Stores' that were selling Records. 3) Also, Albums had 1 less Day to sell - as it was illegal for most Stores to open on a Sunday, in those Days. So, there were no Albums selling on a Sunday - or Singles. 4) So, with far fewer places to buy Albums, & 1 Day a Week less to try to buy one, it was far, far harder for Albums to sell even 200,000 in their 1st Week. 5) That is why the Fastest Sellers List is dominated by the 1990's & 2000's - with only a few 1980's Albums in it. 6) It was virtually impossible for an Album to make that List if it came out in the 1960's to the 1970's - and even for the first half of the 1980's. 7) I am aware of the claim that 'Sgt Pepper' sold 250,000 in its first Week. It MAY have managed it - The Beatles were huge, but even they would have had a big task to sell 250,000 of an LP, in a Week, in the UK. 8) I do know that some Frankie Goes To Hollywood Fans are claiming that Leona's 375,000 is NOT the most for a UK Debut Album, in its 1st Week. They say that, 'Welcome To The Pleasure Dome' sold 400,000 - some say over 400,000 - in its 1st Week, in November 1984. I have looked very carefully at the claim, & regard it as garbage. The FGTH Album had, (then), record 'Advance Sales' of 1,099,000 in the UK. However, it sold nothing like 400,000 of them in Week 1. I have checked all over the place, & I am assured that it had 'only' sold about 550,000 of its 1,099,000 'Orders' by December 31st 1984. It took 8 Weeks & 5 Days to sell 550,000 - making it a joke, that some FGTH Fans claim it sold 400,000 in the 1st Week! (It came out on Thursday 1st November 1984).
