IF you saw red after hearing too much Pink in the past year, it was because she was the most broadcast artist on Australian airwaves.

The American pop star dominated playlists in the past 12 months, with hit after hit from her fourth album I'm Not Dead and a national tour.

The Phonographic Performance Company of Australia's Most Played Artists report for 2007 also featured more Australian artists than ever before, as broadcasters increasingly embrace a diverse offering of local releases.

Eskimo Joe and Evermore made it into the top 10, with Rogue Traders, Shannon Noll, INXS and Pete Murray making the top 20.

Surprisingly Britisher Robbie Williams came in at No.2 despite a lacklustre response to his album Rudebox.

Pink's smash hit U + Ur Hand topped the PPCA's most played recordings, with Black Fingernails, Red Wine from the Eskys and Silverchair's Straight Lines also in the top 10.

"It's so exciting each year to watch the broadcast appeal of our local talent grow,'' said PPCA boss Stephen Peach.

"Australian artists have featured in over 25 per cent of both reports, a strong result for our industry.''

The strongest performing newcomer to both lists was Irish band Snow Patrol, but it was television rather than radio airplay which propelled them onto the airwaves.

Their single Chasing Cars was used by Seven to promote an episode of Grey's Anatomy.

A huge surprise was celebrity TV casualty Nick Lachey, whose music career received a momentary boost with the autobiographical lament, What's Left Of Me. It was the 24th most played song for the year.

And then there was the one-hit wonder that wouldn't leave the top of the charts for weeks - Sandi Thom's I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) which finished at No.54.

Of course the power of classic hits radio to keep heritage artists in royalty payments could not be denied with Fleetwood Mac, Queen and Elton John making the top 50.

But it was the hot new pop acts and guaranteed hitmakers who owned the airwaves this year.

Nelly Furtado, The Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson proved in-escapable on the commercial pop stations.

Their older and wiser peers _ such as U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Coldplay _ satisfied those tuning into rock programs.

The lists are compiled by the PPCA from extensive playlist and broadcast data which they use to distribute royalties to artists and a song's copyright owners.

Well that is alot better than what will be said if his next album does'nt perform well. At least they won't be harping on about his career being going down the drain and him being desperate etc, if he has a huge hit single and album again. Those who refuse to believe Rob has and had a huge part in the songwriting with Guy, will never ever believe it. They are just pure ignorant. -_-

I agree , however will they release an album in the traditional sense..that is the big question...there is no money to be made out of selling CD's anymore with shipping costs etc...I even heard that the distributors were going to start penalising the record cpompanies for returns, it seems that in recent times the number of returns has increased significantly ...seeing there is some dispute over the way that the sales are actually calculated ( I am not big into that side of it & not sure how it works )...I would actually love to see a new album being part of a boxset similar to what U2 have done this Christmas with JT, I think the package that they put together is very classy & will see extremely well....( only my opinion ). There has been lots of mention that Robbie will do downloads only...his management are pretty forward in their thinking so who knows what they come up with....I would love to see Robbie with a big seller again but I personally doubt that will happen ...it would go completely against what is happening in the music industry at the moment...I hope that I will be proved completely wrong..... -_-

Great to see Robbie at number 2 in the airplay here in Oz. The frustating thing for me is what seemed to be a refusal to play stuff from Rudebox. My radio staion played the top 4 requested songs every afternoon and at the time She's Madonna was out it was number 1 every time I listened to the countdown...but would they play it any other time....NO  and it soon vanished from the airwaves. Lovelight didn't last much longer and that sounded brilliant on the radio.

His back catalogue is what got him to number 2....LMEY, Rock DJ, Better man, Angels, Monsoon, Feel, Come Undone, and Kids are regulars on the airwaves which is pretty impressive really  .

Is it an idication that there is such a thing as a Robbie Williams type of song & if he does anything else that is different the radio stations will not play it.....the same thing happened here ...I have heard hardly anything off the Rudebox been played in months...anything that I have heard is his old stuff....

Yes there was ALOT of P!nk over the radio, and im glad Robbie made it to #2...Aswell as Eskimo Joe who made it into the top 10 :D

ROBBIE'S £150M REVENGE TOUR

POP icon Robbie Williams is to become the biggest comeback king of all time with a stunning £150million world tour. He is out to prove he is bigger than his old band Take That. And he is determined to make 2008 his year after taking 12 months out to beat depression and his addiction to prescription drugs.

The Angels singer is plotting a mega-bucks musical revival topped off with a massive worldwide tour.

It will see 33-year-old Robbie’s bank balance bulge by a colossal £150million.

He was furious after rival Gary Barlow, 36, said there would never be a place for Robbie in his old band following Take That’s stunning comeback this year.

Now he aims to leave them in the shade with a sell-out worldwide tour performing all his old hits including Millenium and Rock DJ.

He is even planning to release a new album off the back of the tour.

“Robbie’s watched Take That come back and be successful,” said a music insider.

“Now’s the time to show he is even better as a solo artist and has the success that they can only ever dream of.”

The source added: “Robbie needs Take That like we need the rain. His 2006 Close Encounters tour shifted 1.5million tickets in a day, 3.5million overall and grossed over £170m.

“Whatever the critics say he is a force to be reckoned with and everyone knows he puts on a great show which is why millions across the globe are always desperate to get their hands on his concert tickets.”

Robbie, who has been spotted out and about sporting a beard, will begin a health drive in the new year to get him back in shape.

Girlfriend Ayda Field, 28 – the star of TV series Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip – is said to be the inspiration behind his comeback.

Pals say the babe has helped him get his creative juices flowing again.

Robbie will take the tour back to Knebworth where, in 2003, he performed to 375,000 people over three days. And he is also lining up a string of dates around the globe.

“After so long out of the limelight his fans are desperate to see him back where he belongs, on stage,” said our source.

“It’s got the potential to be one of the biggest tours ever seen.”

Robbie plots music comeback for 2008

Thursday, December 27 2007, 15:58 GMT

By Kimberley Dadds | Digitalspy.com

Robbie Williams is planning a huge comeback for 2008 to rival the success of Take That's reunion.

The singer's last album Rudebox was panned by critics and he recently ended his four-year recording deal with EMI.

Meanwhile, his former band have scored two number one singles, while their album Beautiful World is still in the UK top ten after over a year.

Reports claimed that Williams is jealous of the success that Take That have enjoyed. A source said: "Things haven't been going that well for Robbie recently and he's been having a bit of a break from recording. His last album, Rudebox, was panned by critics, which was made worse by the fact Take That are doing so well without him.

"Robbie has now decided enough is enough and it's time to reclaim his crown. He is working on new material and he reckons this is the best stuff he has ever come up with. There could even be another hit like 'Angels'."

The singer, who left the group in 1995, was asked to join Take That when they first reunited for their comeback tour, but he turned the offer down. It has since been rumoured that he would join them for a one-off performance, but his former bandmate Gary Barlow said: "There is no place for Robbie in Take That anymore."

Nothing new really. Provosional Release dates put out by the Spanish Media to Spanish Press/Radio Stations show that Robbie's next album could be ready for release in September 2008.
ummm.... has Katie even heard Robbie saying he won't be doing large tours anymore?

Gary Barlow beats rival Robbie Williams in hair poll

The Angels singer comes in with 4th worst barnet in survey

Gary Barlow has beaten rival Robbie Williams in a hair poll.

The Take That frontman, 36, has been looking fantastic on the Take That tour - and it's been noticed.

'Gary Barlow has had a fantastic year and to be winner is the crowning glory,' Men's Hairdresser of the Year Louis Byrne tells the Daily Star.

'He sports a classic, groomed look – impressive yet effortless.'

Ex-bandmate Robbie, 33, came bottom of the survey by Brylcreem. He was voted 4th worst hairstyle in the musician category.

It's a dramatic turn of events as just a few years ago Robbie was considered the best-looking member of Take That, while Gary was always seen as the rather plain tubby one. .....

Other winners included David Beckham, 32, who won the best hairstyle amongst sports personalities, while Top Gear's Richard Hammond, 37, came out on top in the TV category.

I always thought that there's an agreement between radio stations and record companies, that determines what is played on radio.

I think at this point, Robbie fans are not very opened to new sounds from him and really would prefer the old standard, Angels type songs. Ofcourse if he would just do the same thing, then there would be complaints that he doesn't try anything new. He can't win either way.

Indigestion is a terrible thing......how desperate are they for a story & how pathetic...& they call themselves journalists........

Last year I sent an email to a journalist at a UK newspaper ( who was stupid enough to put her email address & name on the site ) & asked her about her journalistic cqualifications & she got totally violent...it turns out that a lot of the papers SUB out work to people who specifically write certain pieces for the papers & are paid according to the number of words in the article...( a friend of mine used to work for a top newspaper here so she told me that this is what happens & that is why we see these articles coming up time & time again )..I accused the journalist of plagarism & she totally lost her rag & email me back several times ...I think I actually got her worried......I just love getting up their bloody noses..... :P :P :P :P :P :P it made my day.....

LOL good on you for challenging them.

These tabloid 'journalists' are just the rejects who weren't good enough to get proper journalism jobs. That's the way I see them.

Poor Rob, even his hair is not good enough. I'm sure he'll have sleepless nights over that

I can just see the next story ............. Robbie's hair revenge. He's so jealous of Barlow getting voted for better hair that he is planning a follicle comeback

But that is exactly my point....anyone can do it from home & send it in to the newspaper.....it is a cheap way for the paper to get a so called story....that is why all the time you see stories dissected all over the place & then posted willy nillly.....' t****'....

EMI owner to 'launch cost-cutting regime'

This is Money

EMI's new private equity owners are believed to be planning to impose strict rules on artist signings and make sweeping budget cutbacks at the music group, a report said today.

Terra Firma, which took EMI private in a £2.4bn deal in September, is said to be launching a cost clampdown, which could see a number of its 5,500 employees axed next year.

The Financial Times reports that the buyout group is also planning to cut marketing budgets by £28m over the next five years.

The move risks sparking anger among EMI's artists, including stars such as Lily Allen, Robbie Williams and Joss Stone, who could fear that marketing spend reductions would affect record sales.

But the move is thought to be vital for Terra Firma to meet ambitious targets set when the firm bought EMI earlier this year. Mr Hands is expected to unveil the plans in the new year, according to the FT.

He has already reportedly told staff to submit business plans and secure senior executive approval before signing new artists.

Terra Firma announced a new management line-up at the music label soon after acquiring the firm, with former boss Eric Nicoli and chief financial officer Martin Stewart quitting before the September de-listing.

Terra Firma's Chris Roling took on the post of chief operating officer, while Ashley Unwin was appointed director of business transformation. Mr Hands also launched a new supervisory board to help steer EMI's 'strategic business relationships'.

EMI has suffered as music sales worldwide have been hit by digital downloading and illegal piracy. The group's last set of annual results showed profits before tax and adjustments fell from £118.1m to a loss of £263.6m.

EMI's music publishing business, however, saw an increase in full year underlying earnings, up 4.2% to £105.6m.

The division - which oversees EMI's ownership of song rights - is headed by Roger Faxon, who has remained in place despite the boardroom clear-out. EMI was not immediately available for comment on today's reports.

I don't see why Rob would get angry over it. EMI never spent any money marketing him anyway
