further to the argument that all jangly indie music should be termed britpop and knowing thats its eurovision on saturday (and noone has come up with any decent foreign acts)

does this mean all indie music from europe is rubbish?

(well probably apart from a few acts in sweden  )

Well I can't think of any good ones from the top of my head at this moment. *Tries to find one he likes*

I can think of quite a load of Metal, Industrial, EBM, Electro, Goth and Hard Rock bands from Europe that are great, but European "Indie" bands....? I'm struggling......

Alec Empire - he's got his own label (Digital Hardcore), and it's bloody hard to pin him into a specific genre as such (Industrial/Techno/Punk Rock....?), so I'll start us off with him....

...Mind you, quite a few of the Euro-Metal bands that I listen to aren't on major labels, so going by the original definition of Indie=bands on Independent labels, you could add Moonlight (Poland), The Gathering (Holland), Epica (Holland), Ataraxia (Italy), After Forever (Holland), Gothminster (Norway), Mortiis (Norway).......

(also mew are danish but hey its near enough to sweden and no doubt they were the same country in something like 1806   however the random page generator at wikipedia has taken me to Tristan da Cunha and im not bothering to look at that scandifact   its all Æ ø ö to me anyway   )

There's Maximilian Hecker and Couch from Germany...

Otherwise, dunno.

so 3 bands from the whole of non-swedish europe. well think that proves that jangly things are only relevant to people in the uk and ireland

Well, Stereolab are half French.

Indie as we know it does seem consigned to the UK and Scandinavia as far as our charts go, but I'll bet there are a huge number of small bands influenced by, say, The Smiths playing all around Europe. It's just the big names that make it to the UK...and that's usually cos they offer something different...like semi-operatic pyro-rock from Rammstein.

Is that the Nite Versions then? I saw the live in 04 doing the album and wasn't impressed...mind you the original album wasn't very good. Nite Versions is ace.

...and, of course, their DJ sets are legendary.

is the nite versions the more dancified versions.

E-talking is great

sorry - should have specified more.

I've seen them 4-5 times 'normal' and once doing a 'nite sessions' (and seeing another in spain this summer). The 'nite sessions' are their own songs done without guitars etc and just synths... as stated above, more danceable. *note - 2 many dj's is completely seperate. It's simply two main people from Soulwax (they are brothers) mixing/dj'ing songs.

Where they stand out is their 'normal' live set. Truly a great indie live band with so much great music and their best album is easily 'Much Against Everyone's Advice' which you should all check out as there's only a couple songs from 'Any Minute Now' that stand out much...

Yes, I know 2ManyDJs is just the Daewale brothers.

But they often appear on the same bills...makes sense really.

Saw them in Edinburgh doing the non-nite versions of the album and I thought they were poor. The synthy versions are great.

what?! really!? when?!

No joke, seen them a few times and honestly think they are best all-round live indie band around. (have seen Arcade Fire in the last year and they were admittadly better, but it was just one show...)

Arcade Fire are coool. one of the best bands of recent times, however their probably lumped in a whole 'Can-rock' alt.thingy which i dont know the genre name of the moment. but lumped with broken social scene and ohers

T on the Fringe 04.

Not that they didn't play well, I just don't like their guitar sound. Found it very boring. But lot's of other people there enjoyed it.

BSS is another very good band live... the new albums makes so much more sense live (and others agree). Getting tix for their Aug gig in next coupld days too...

Ok - here's a quick attempt at good european bands (just going throug a list of band I play on my radio satiion and my (admitadly bad!) memory on where they are from) and bolded ones that have a more than a couple songs:

Air

Amon Tobin

B. Fleischmann

Colder

Daft Punk

Division Kent

Erlend Øye

Grizzly Bear

Kings of Convenience

Lali Puna

Le Tigre

M83

Magnet

Nouvelle Vague

Sigur Ros

Soulwax

Stereolab

Ulrich Schnauss

Vate

wow! I thought I had TONS more than that! May have missed a few but that's about it... All other bands are UK (inc Ireland fyi), Canada or US...
