From Sky News:

Jose Mourinho has ruled himself out of the running for the England job, according to a statement on his agent's website.

The former Chelsea boss confirmed he had been in talks with the FA's Brian Barwick and Sir Trevor Brooking.

But he said he has decided he does not want to be named Steve McClaren's successor.

Mourinho said in a statement on his agent Jorge Mendes' website: "After Steve McClaren left the England football team, my representatives maintained contact with the FA.

"In that sense, I had myself useful discussions with Brian Barwick and Trevor where we exchanged ideas to evaluate the entire situation about the England squad and set the goals in case of real invitation being addressed to me.

"After deep and serious thinking, I decided to exclude myself from being England manager despite it being a fantastic position for me.

"I'm sure FA will hire a great manager, one able to place the team back where it belongs.

"I reiterate my respect for English football and, after three good years in England, I firmly believe that the England squad will soon be back to their usual great results."

Sky's Jon Desborough said it may be that Mourinho is using it as a "bargaining tool" - to force the hand of either England administrators or top European clubs.

But he added: "If it's true, and we have to take it at face value, then he has broken a lot of football fans' hearts."

Hmmm we'll see. I still think it's entirely possible that he might become England manager but the thing that interests me is why he's ruled himself out now...

Lippi will be the choice the FA will go for now methinks. I just hope they book him some English lessons too.

Good.

I think he is over rated and do we really want a manager who raves over Frank Lampard and as Chelsea manager said "If I was England manager I would drop Steven Gerrard. He is a selfish player and does not play for the benefit of his team."

Get Fabio Cappelio while he is still available. His CV makes Mourinho look like an amateur.

Good.

Or Maybe Mourinho is the one that gets the best out of Fat Frank, love him or hate him the t*** gets 20 goals + a season at club level so maybe Jose would have got more out of him that WFJ did

Capello would never get the England job, he is way way more expensive than the FA would ever think about paying, his wage demands for a club is £6 AFTER tax (£9m a year) the FA would be insane pay it

There is only 1 candidate for me and that is Big Phil Scolari - huge international experience and doesn't take any $h!t

Capello poised for England talks

BBC News

Italian Fabio Capello has emerged as the clear favourite to become the next manager of England after Jose Mourinho ruled himself out of contention.

BBC Sport understands Capello, 61, has already been sounded out by the Football Association and that an appointment could be made very soon.

The former Real Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Roma coach has already said he is keen to succeed Steve McClaren.

World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi is thought to be Capello's main rival.

But both Lippi, who steered Italy to success in the 2006 tournament, and fellow contenders Jurgen Klinsmann, who led Germany to the semi-finals, and Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill look to have fallen down the pecking order.

"My understanding, in terms of Capello, is that there has been contact and there will be more," said 5 Live football correspondent Jonathan Legard.

"The discreet soundings were encouraging and now the coach who has won domestic league titles with every club he has managed is set for full-blown discussions.

"He admitted his interest from the outset, describing it as a 'beautiful challenge', and I would say Fabio Capello looks odds-on to be the next coach of England.

"The stylish, bespectacled 61-year-old with a trophy-laden CV from Italy and Spain clearly comes with a world-class label that FA chief executive Brian Barwick has been looking for."

Capello, whose English is limited, has won nine league titles in 16 years as coach, picking up silverware with all four clubs he has coached.

He won the Champions League with Milan in 1994 and was also an accomplished player, winning 32 caps as a midfielder for the national team.

Since leaving Madrid in June after guiding them to the La Liga crown, Capello, born in San Canzian d'Isonzo, has been working as a commentator for Italian television company RAI.

But according to BBC sources, RAI have already begun the search for his replacement, seemingly convinced he is about to be given the England job.

Mourinho had been the favourite to succeed McClaren, who was axed after England failed to qualify for next year's European Championship.

But the former Chelsea boss, who appears to prefer a club job, withdrew from the running after holding talks with Barwick and Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football.

"After serious thought, I decided to exclude myself, despite it being a fantastic position," he said in a statement on his agent's website.

"I'm sure the FA will hire a great manager, one able to place the team back where it belongs."

Capello poised for England talks

Capello, whose English is limited

It doesn't matter how many titles he has won in Italy or Spain if he can't speak English then he is no use

Jacques Santini was very successful in France but was hopeless at Spurs as he could not speak English so could not communicate properly with the players

The ability to speak good clear English should be the #1 requirement for an England manager

Neither does Tottenham's current manager. Mind you, he *does* have an English/Spanish speaker to help him.

Edit - Just remembered that he can speak English: he just doesn't wanna speak it when talking to the media.

Yeah Ramos speaks good English and he uses English on the training ground and in dressing room, he thinks in Spanish and therefore does not want to say something that might be twisted by the media so he just uses Poyet to talk to the media but his conversational English is very good ^_^

If Capello is appointed now, then he'll have a good 2 months to learn English decently enough.

There are rumours that he'll appoint Alan Shearer as his assistant, which would be great imo.

What a load of tosh!

If anything with the British media I'd call it an advantage not a disadvantage.

Being serious, for example the great Sir Bobby Robson could not speak a word of Dutch when he became manager of PSV Eindhoven, so he had as #2 an assistant/interpreter who could speak both languages: Frank Arnesen.

Then moving to Portugal at Sporting Lisbon he did the same thing with someone you'll be strangely familar with from this picture:

Why is that a bad thing? Anyone whos watched England over the last three years would have noticed that both Gerrard and Lampard have both been out two worst performerd and have been compltely useless in comparison to their club form. So why would it be bad for Jose to play the one he's been getting the best out of for three years? It makes perfect sense!

So you think Frank Lampard is a better player than Steven Gerrard? Hilarious.

Still as a Liverpool supporter the idea of Stevie G following Jamie Carragher into international retirement (as any manager who thinks Fat Lamplard is better than Stevie G it insulting Livepool's greatest player post the halycon days of 1973-1990) would not exactly upset me.

Not particularly. They're both excellent for club but completely awful for country. If I had to pick I probably would pick Gerrard as best but both have done f*** all for England since Euro 2004. Jose Mourinho is obviously going to play the one which he knows best and made him the player he is for Chelsea. The same as Rafa Benitez would more than likely pick Gerrard over Lampard.

It's also not about thinking who's better but who can play best in a team and/or system. I have no doubt that Lampard and Gerrard are, or atleast can/should be our two best central midfield players, but it's quite clear they can't play together. Just because Lampard is a better player than Gareth Barry it doesn't mean McClown was wrong to play Barry, he worked better in the system. If you had the choice of choosing between two players with great ability; one you've managed for the last 3 seasons, and one you've never managed at all, which would you pick?

Gerrard is a great player but Lampard gets 20+ goals a season at club level, something Gerrard doesn't so if I had to have one of them at Spurs I would choose Lampard in a heartbeat

Gerrard and Lampard both play completely different roles at their clubs though. I'd choose Gerrard everytime because I think he's a more complete player overall. He was playing on the right wing last season for Liverpool and look how many goals he scored? If Jose was manager then I think he'd be able to get the best out of both players tbh...

Capello is gonna be the new manager then! No offical confirmation yet however and there was suppose to be tonight.

in a nutshell Mourinho used the England vacancy to draw out interest from a big European club (ala AC Milan who are lagging in 10th in Serie A)
