U2 have confirmed that their new studio album, initially scheduled to be released in November, will now not be out until 2009.

Writing on U2.com Bono explains the delay is because the band are still writing and recording new material. The singer says: "I thought a while back we might have the album wrapped by now, but why come up above ground now if there's more priceless stuff to be found?"

Saying that there are now at least "50 or 60" new songs in the making, Bono writes "We know we have to emerge soon but we also know that people don't want another U2 album unless it is our best ever album," adding, "It has to be our most innovative, our most challenging ... or what's the point ?"

The new album, for which U2 have returned to working with former collaborators including Brian Eno and Steve Lillywhite is the follow-up to How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb which was released in 2004.

The Edge: delaying release will take U2 album 'to next level'

Plus guitarist praises Mercury Prize winners Elbow

Sep 10, 2008

U2's The Edge has told NME.COM that his band are still writing songs for their next album.

The band recently decided to push back the release date of the follow-up to 2004's 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb', declaring they wanted "2009 to be our year".

However, while many were anticipating that the record would come out this year, U2's guitarist explained the band were still hard at work on the album.

"We're still writing and we're trying to take it to the next level," said The Edge. "Its taking a while, but I'm told there's no short cut to greatness!"

The U2 man - who spoke to NME.COM after presenting Peter Gabriel with Amnesty International's 2008 Ambassador of Conscience award in London today (September 10) recognising the legend's work in the area of human rights - also added the he was really pleased that Elbow won the 2008 Nationwide Mercury Prize for 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.

"They're a really good band, good for them," he declared, before joking: "More power to your Elbow!"

Have U2 got writers' block?

Bono and The Edge look perplexed in video

Tom Porter, Mon 20 Oct, 11:59 am BST

U2: Stuck In A Moment?

We love it when bands post sneaky in-the-studio videos. They often bare little resemblance to the finished product, but they feed imaginations. While U2 might not be considered as internet-trailblazers, they've jumped on this particular bandwagon with enthusiasm.

While a previous video revealed Larry Mullen Jnr's drum parts for reported single Sexy Boots, the latest snippet shows only a painstakingly slow songwriting process. The Edge and producer Daniel Lanois silently stare at a blank piece of paper while Bono thinks about clicking something on a MacBook.

The new album - which may or may not be called No Line On The Horizon - is toted for an early 2009 release. If this is the case we'll assume the majority of songs are, in fact, already finished. Perhaps U2 are merely trying to come up with a title - following 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb can't be easy…

New U2 Album Is "Some Of Their Best Work"

Posted by Daniel Wilcox on 11.05.2008

And it's nearly finished, too...

Producer Daniel Lanois says the upcoming U2 album, No Line On The Horizon, is "fantastically innovative" and represents "some of their best work." Originally, producer Rick Rubin was brought in to helm the U2 the sessions, but it was eventially decided that the band would again work with their long-time collaborators Lanois and Brian Eno. The two producers also contributed to the writing of the album.

Co-producer Lanois says the record is very close to completion, but he notes that U2 have been known to make significant last-minute changes to songs. As such, he is loath to speculate as to an exact release date.

"Trying to weave it all together into a coherent collection is the challenge," guitarist The Edge admits. "But, yeah, it has the potential to be our best."

U2 producer talks about their new album

Nov 18, 2008

U2's producer Daniel Lanois, has spoken on about his time with the band and their new album.

Speaking to the Boston Herald Lanois said Bono's voice is sounding great and the band have "reinvented" the genre of rock 'n' roll again with the upcoming record.

He said: "The president of the company is singing better than ever and the tracks are wildly innovative. I would never have thought things would have gone this way. I believe, well, rock 'n' roll has been reinvented one more time."

Lanois also revealed why the relationship between him and U2 has continued for so long - the producer has worked on six albums, including 'The Unforgettable Fire' and 'The Joshua Tree' in 1984 and 1987.

"I like those people for their appetite for innovation. They want things to be new and fresh, and they never get stuck on how the band should sound," explained Lanois. They're very smart people. And (Brian) Eno and I just have a lot of fun with them, especially for the first 20 or 30 per cent of the record. During those first sessions, it's no-holds-barred, we take on anything that comes our way."

He added: "I also think Bono's lyrics get better with every record."

The follow-up to 2004's 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb', due early next year, is strongly rumoured to be called 'No Line On The Horizon'.

New U2 album 'needs two more songs'

Nov 25, 2008

U2 pushed back the release of their new album from late 2008 to next year because the record needed two more songs, according to the boss of their label.

Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine says he met with the band, who told him the album was two songs short, so the release date was adjusted to give them time to work on those tracks.

"I met with the guys in U2, and they say to me, 'You know what? This album needs two more songs, and it will be exactly what we have in mind.' I go there and I listen, and I agreed with them."

Iovine told Billboard: "It's a great record, but it deserves the time. Labels need to work with artists to help them achieve their best work, not to jam records out that are half-baked or three-quarters baked."

U2 announced in September that they were pushing back the release date of the album, the follow-up to 2004's 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb', saying they were on a songwriting roll.

"We've hit a rich songwriting vein," Bono said in a statement on U2's website. "It gets a bit dark down here but looks like we've found diamonds, not coal. I thought a while back we might have the album wrapped by now, but why come up above ground now if there's more priceless stuff to be found? It's been maddening...there have been injuries and recoveries, no babies born that I know of, but this one is nearly ready for the new year of 2009."

The album is reportedly set to be called 'No Line On The Horizon'.

U2's Edge updates No Line on the Horizon details

By Henry Freedland on November 25, 2008 2:15 PM |

When The Edge calls, you pick up. Especially if you're a music magazine like MOJO and The Edge is giving a progress report on U2's still-delayed 12th studio album.

The Edge confirmed that the working title is still No Line on the Horizon. "What the hell does it mean?" asked the MOJO interviewer. "It's like when you're moving forward, but you're not exactly sure what you're heading towards," said The Edge. "That moment where the sea and the sky blend into one. It's an image of infinity, I suppose—a kind of Zen image." The Edge is kind of philosophical.

The Edge insisted that things could still change. "U2 albums never get finished," The Edge said. "They just get released."

The Edge guitarist also reported that the songs recorded with super-producer Rick Rubin in 2006 have been shelved, and most of No Line's material comes from sessions with (other) super-producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who also helped with writing.

The Edge confirmed some tracks: "Moment of Surrender" is seven and a half minutes long and "Unknown Caller" comes from sessions the band did while in Fez, Morocco. But The Edge was not an unknown caller. He was The Edge.

The Edge further described his sense of the record. "It's a record of two halves," said The Edge. "One half is songs that came virtually fully-formed out of sessions we did with Brian and Danny—stuff we've only played once or maybe twice and that's it: just the raw moment of creation. Then the other half is material we've kicked around a while and went through the usual cycle of versions and incarnations."

The Edge presents you with a paradox to ponder while waiting for the album's release, now planned for February. "It sounds like a U2 album but it doesn't sound like anything we've done before and it doesn't really sound like anything that's happening at the moment."

The Edge has spoken.

Will.i.am To Produce U2 Album

It’s been speculated that Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am would be working with rockers U2 on their upcoming album.

Rapper Kanye West just confirmed the news on his blog: “Will.i.am is producing U2’s next album. I’m sure it will be dope as s— judging from the crazy beats he’s done in the past 3 years!”

Will.i.am has said, “I would love to do something with them. It that ever happens it would be a dream come true! I went to Bono’s house. He has these summer parties and I went and had great food. It was the best. Those guys are the nicest people in the world.”

Kanye West: Will.I.Am is producing new U2 album

Is this a practical joke? Why would on earth would Bono and co hand over production duties to the man who brought the world My Humps?

Sean Michaels guardian.co.uk, Tuesday December 9 2008 11.01 GMT

The Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am is producing U2's new album, according to Kanye West.

As a piece of news, it seems blatantly false. Yes, U2 have been working for ages on the tentatively titled No Line On the Horizon. But they have been working for ages with the pristine talents of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois – why would they swap these illustrious talents for the man who brought the world My Humps?

And yet, well, why would Kanye lie? Yesterday's blog declaration was relatively unequivocal. "WILL.I.AM IS PRODUCING ON U2'S NEXT ALBUM," Kanye wrote, caps lock key evidently stuck. "I'M SURE IT WILL BE DOPE AS $h!t JUDGING FROM THE CRAZY BEATS HE'S DONE IN THE PAST 3 YEARS!"

However, the neon-sunglassed rapper did not say that Will.I.Am had taken over for Eno and Lanois. But neither did he say that Will.I.Am had stumbled into the studio and accidentally flipped a switch. Unless Kanye West is just misinformed (and this is possible), we surmise Will.I.Am is just working on one song. Or a B-side. Or a remix. Or, er, a practical joke?

To be frank, a Will.I.Am take on U2 is the most abhorrent idea we have heard this year – and the year is almost over. We are great fans of Kanye but when it comes to Mr I.Am we must respectfully disagree. The man's production makes us snooze, and any team-up with U2 will, we are certain, make us want to crawl under the duvet in the foetal position. Just to make it go away. Also – is Bono going to rap?!

:P

Kanye Confused About U2 Album

12/09/08 1:03pm

by Steve McLean (CHARTattack)

Kanye West either knows something that no-one else does, or he's very confused. If I were a betting man, I'd probably lay my money down on option two.

In the midst of posting art, design and hot babe photos on his blog on Tuesday, West announced, "WILL I AM IS PRODUCING ON U2's NEXT ALBUM. I'M SURE IT WILL BE DOPE AS $h!t JUDGING FROM THE CRAZY BEATS HE'S DONE IN THE PAST 3 YEARS!"

Looking at the comments posted by fans after the entry, it seems that West's acolytes are taking his word as gospel. I guess that's what happens when you're the self-proclaimed "voice of this generation."

West's proclamation may come as a surprise to Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, who've been confirmed as the forthcoming U2 album's producers and co-writers. It might also p*** off producer Rick Rubin, whose tracks were rejected by U2 for the record, which is tentatively titled No Line On The Horizon and scheduled for a Feb. 23 release.

U2 haven't been publicly quoted about working with Will.I.Am, but the Black Eyed Peas member told MTV News that he was at a summer party at Bono's house and would "love to do something with them," saying that it would be "a dream come true."

Maybe the hologram of Will.I.Am that appeared on CNN's U.S. election night coverage might be able to sneak into the studio with U2 and fiddle with some knobs without anyone noticing its presence.

Oh dear.

Hopefully its only for one song. Im not a big fan of Mr I.am

I wish U2 would just set a release date and start announcing the tour dates. I am dying to know where and when they are playing Ireland :D

U2's new album reminds me of the Beatles, says 02 chief

By Melanie Finn

Thursday December 11 2008

He admits he's not the most impartial source, but Point Village owner Harry Crosbie is hailing U2's new album as their best to date.

The affable developer of the sprawling new O2 arena joined two of the band's stars in the venue last Sunday as Bono and the Edge filmed footage there for a new Ronnie Drew special.

And Harry, who has been friends with the superstar band for years, told the Diary how he was blown away when he heard material from their new album.

"I think it's the best thing they have ever done and I am not just saying that because they are my friends," he said.

"It is a stunning piece of creative work and, to me, it reminds me of the Beatles when they were at their best. It's a fabulous piece of work."

Bono and the Edge became one of the first artists to perform at the new O2 venue after Harry enticed them down to his new multi-million euro venue.

But he laughed: "I've been looking after them for many years and they decided to repay the favour, so they did a little private concert and the sound was studio perfect. When we were waiting to listen to them, Bono was messing around doing opera and we could hear it crystal clear on the back seats, with no microphones. It was a great day."

His concert venue will now play host to a bevy of superstars over the coming weeks, including Coldplay and Kings of Leon.

The one artist that Harry is determined not to miss is US troubadour Bob Dylan, whom he last met with U2.

"The last time we saw him was in Vicar Street and this time he is bringing us out for our dinner so I'm definitely not going to miss that!" he added.

Meanwhile, Bono's wife Ali Hewson is leading the race to be named the Sexiest Other Half. Organised by events website entertainment.ie, she is currently out in front in the accolade for the hottest partner.

Hot on her heels though is Sean Moncrieff's wife, Bridget, followed by Lorraine Keane's singer hubbie, Peter Devlin. In the Sexiest TV Presenter category, Caroline Morahan is out in front, followed by sexy cook Louise Lennox from The Afternoon Show.

The TV Show of the Year accolade has TV3's Irish Apprentice in pole position, with voting in all the categories staying open until December 21.
