I'm STILL in shock that LEON won the X Factor. Easily the least justified winner of any reality TV contest yet. At least when McManus won she actually WAS the best contestant at the time. And David Sneddon really wasn't as bad as people say. He could keep in tune at least. Although with them I'm sure the Scottish factor may also have helped...

But it comes to something when the WINNER'S encore is sung flat and off-key. He may have a POTENTIALLY better voice than Same Difference, but how many times in the contest were they off-key? I can't recall ANY.

 

The final did demonstrate how ridiculously skewed the whole thing is.

 

- Same Difference and Rhydian get "highlights" showing their first auditions were they were "the two most annoying people I have ever met" and "revolting". Leon gets five minutes of him blubbing about how his mum lives in a council house and he's doing it all for her.

 

- The judges. Why was Simon frequently the ONLY one to ever point out when Leon sang flatly, whilst the others just focused on how "cute" he looked.

 

- Same Difference get a bloke who couldn't even win an I'm A Celebrity series against a truckload of D-listers. Leon gets Kylie. Hmmm...that's fair. I wonder how many people were voting for Kylie rather than Leon? I'm not claiming that all Leon voters would have done this, but with only 1% in it between him and Rhydian, I'd take a bet that the Kylie factor may well have won it.

 

- The ridiculous attempt at stirring up some sort of civil war. Reality TV shows in the past have shown that there is a significant number of ridiculously patriotic Scots who will vote in their masses for a haggis to win the X Factor as long as it was Scottish. The same can't really be said of the English where we will go out of our way to ban the St George's flag and will happily make more of a fuss over St Patricks Day than our own national day. So with that blithering twit Louis running about screeching about how "Scotland should get behind you", "I hope Wales backs you", "Portsmouth should pick up the phone", there was only going to be one winner. Quite why one of the show's own judges decided to encourage people to vote for contestants on the basis of nationality rather than ability is beyond me. Surely he would rather the people of Scotland or of Portsmouth voted for who they thought had the most talent? Is he trying to kill off his own source of employment?

 

Leon barely deserved to make the top 5, let alone WIN the thing. As far as singing ability and entertainment goes, he was MILES behind Rhydian, Same Difference, Niki, and even Beverley.

I really hate that people assume all of scotland is behind leon and all of scotland voted for him. f*** that. I'm scottish and I am embarrassed at the hype the media here has caused over this. And I am embarrassed that politicians are treating it as a victory. The boy can't hold a note. However, having heard this song they've made him churn out, I am glad Rhydian did not win because his talents really would have been wasted on that drivel. I hope he goes and gets himself a respectable job in music somehow and I hope leon goes back to carphone warehouse or wherever it was he worked before.

 

Oh, and as for the idea that girls voted for him because he was cute -he is as good looking as a scottish person can be, which is rough around the edges to say the least with their wonky teeth and harsh features. In other words, not particularly good looking at all.

 

So the only conclusion i can draw is that people fell for his sob story.

From the evidence of this it looks like all a sympathy vote can do is give you a chart career of less than one year. But at least David Sneddon had talent, whilst Michelle McManus could hold a tune. Which is more than can be said for Leon......

Well the Scottish media were right behind him, and so were the Scottish SNP policticians. If nationality has nothing to do with him winning, then why did Scottish SNP leader Alex Salmond hail Leon's victory as "A great day for Scotland..." on Sunday morning?

 

Then again who was the least popular winner of all-time on Big Brother, in terms of how well it was received at the time and their long term popularity & success? And what was his nationality. ;)

 

 

Obviously he has a nation behind him. But then so did Same Difference. And so did Rhydian. So his win cannot be placed on that. And success won't depend on his nationality, quite obviously, but his material. That's what I'm saying.

That's complete and utter bollocks.

 

I didn't want Leon to win, but the fact of the matter is HE DID. And people need to get over that fact and move on with thier lives. Rhydian lost. And I believe that the voting was correct and obvisoly people are upset that Rhydian didn't win, hence why they say 'they couldn't get through'. I couldn't get get through when I tried for Same Difference for the first couple of times, but I did eventually.
