Halfway through the year and time for a little bonus. This week saw the publication of the 2008 Hot Press Yearbook. This is mainly a music business who's who aimed at the industry but as with its 2 previous editions it contains official year end charts for 2007. This post has the main Top 50 singles, The Top 50 singles by Irish artists and the Top 30 airplay charts of the year. Later on in the week I'll post the corresonding album charts and the Top 50 best selling artists.

Chart Track Commentary

 

Brown Bounces Back

Chris Brown climbs back to No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘Forever’ after slipping to No2 last week, when he was deposed by Leanne Moore’s ‘On Wings’ – which crashes to No27 this week as local promotional activity dries up.

Rihanna’s ‘Take A Bow’ steps up to No2, ahead of Ne-Yo’s ‘Closer’ at No3, up from No5. Basshunter have this week’s highest new entry with downloads of ‘All I Ever Wanted’ at No4, the follow-up to ‘Now You’re Gone’ which spent 5 weeks at No1 earlier this year.

 

Coldplay take a third week at No1 on the Album Chart this week with ‘Viva La Vida’, and climb to No2 in the 2008 year-to-date ranking (behind Amy Winehouse ‘Back To Black’) after just three weeks on release. Chris Brown climbs one place to No2 with ‘Exclusive’, swapping places with Duffy who drops to No3 with ‘Rockferry’. This week’s highest new entry is from My Chemical Romance, at No19 with ‘The Black Parade Is Dead’, a live CD/DVD set of ‘The Black Parade’ which debuted and peaked at No5 in October 2006.

What a huge drop for Leanne Moore. It is one of the biggest falls from no 1 since the chart began - I'm sure we have a list on one of the UKMix threads but have no idea where exactly it is.

 

Incidentally Jive Bunny, who famously dropped right out of the Top 30 from no 1, released a new 3CD collection this week. The 3rd CD contains many of the hit singles including 2 Irish Number 1s!

 

At the other end of last week's Top 50 Westlife manage their least successful hit single, though admittedly this one is a download-only track.

 

Over on the album chart the new one from My Chemical Romance appears to be listed with its predecessor - it is a re-entry though as far as I am aware the CD is a live version of the Black Parade album with a live DVD of a 2nd show. On the other hand Kings of Leon's Aha Shake Breakdown enters the chart twice - on it's own at 87 and packaged with Youth & Young Manhood.

All He Ever Wanted…

Basshunter climbs three places from No4 to take this week’s No1 on the Singles Chart with the CD release of ‘All I Ever Wanted’. It’s a second consecutive Irish No1 for Swedish DJ Jonas Erik Altberg performing as Basshunter, following in the successful footsteps of ‘Now You’re Gone’ which spent 5 weeks at No1 earlier this year and is currently the second best selling single of the year so far in Ireland (behind Sharon Shannon & Mundy’s ‘Galway Girl’).

Jordin Sparks (feat. Chris Brown) leaps to No2 with ‘No Air’, again, released on CD this week, ahead of Chris Brown’s solo effort ‘Forever’ which slips from No1 to No3. Kid Rock has this week’s highest new entry at No5 with downloads of ‘All Summer Long’ - eight years after his previous incursion on the Irish Charts with ‘American Bad Ass’ which reached No30 in August 2000. The ‘highest climber’ honours this week go to Dizzee Rascal who bounds 23 places from No32 to No9 with ‘Dance Wiv Me’ - No1 in the UK and his first hit in Ireland.

 

Coldplay make it four weeks in a row at No1 on the Album Chart this week with ‘Viva La Vida’, still ahead of Chris Brown who holds at No2 with ‘Exclusive’. In an unusually stable Top 20, Beck has the highest new entry at No12 with his tenth studio album ‘Modern Guilt’. In terms of chart performance, this is his best ever showing on the Irish Chart: all seven of his previous albums made the Top 75 , but only three made the Top 20 - ‘Odelay’, ‘Sea Change’ and ‘Guero’, which was his previous best, peaking at No15 in 2005.

Well a quiet week with just 2 new entries in each of the main singles and albums listings. A slight surprise in the compilation charts again this week as Now 62 climbs from 24 to 19 just ahead of the release of Now 70.

 

Larry Gogan is on holiday this week and Enda Murphy is standing in again though with a slightly different presentation than usual. Just after 3 he said that this week's Top 40 starts with Fall Out Boy staying at 40. Hopes of a full countdown were dashed when he revealed the no 30 and then the no 20 - Sam Sparro which he then played. We DID get a countdown from 20 onwards stopping for Usher at 15 and then bizarrely not playing the 2 big climbers at 10 and 9 we heard Ting Tings at 8. Next it was over to hear I Am I Said from the no 9 album and then back to the singles where we have had all the songs as far as no 4. Next a break for a live performance of Peaches from the Stranglers at Oxygen (given the swearing it seems to be a COMPLETELY live version. After this it was back to the chart to hear the Top 3

Coldplay’s High Five

Coldplay take a fifth consecutive week at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Viva La Vida’, bettering the three weeks that ‘X&Y’ spent at the top in 2005 and the four week reign of ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’ in 2002. It’s also the longest consecutive run at the top since Cascada’s ‘Everytime We Touch’ which spent five weeks at the summit in March-April 2007.

Basshunter has this week’s highest new entry at No2 with ‘Now You’re Gone – The Album’, just missing out on the Singles & Albums chart double. The success of the movie ‘Mamma Mia’ drives Abba’s ‘Gold – The Greatest Hits’ back into the Top 10 at No9, up from No22, and the London Cast recording of the show returns to the chart at No24. To complete an unusual treble, the movie’s ‘Original Soundtrack ‘climbs from No3 to No1 in the Compilation Chart. The only other new entry in this week’s Top 30 is Sharleen Spiteri’s first solo album ‘Melody’ at No28 – a huge improvement on the No74 debut for ‘Red Book’, her previous album with Texas.

 

Basshunter holds at No1 on the Singles Chart for a second week with ‘All I Ever Wanted’, despite a strong challenge from Kid Rock’s ‘All Summer Long’, up from No5 to No2. Madonna is the only newcomer to the Top 10 this week, up from No29 to No10 with the release of the CD and vinyl formats of ‘Give It 2 Me’. McFly have the highest new entry at No23 with their independently-released ‘One For The Road’ new at No22 - their sixth Irish Top 30 single, although none have reached higher than No14.

Kid Rocks

In his third week in the Singles Chart Kid Rock takes his ‘All Summer Long’ to the Top of the Chart up from last week’s No2. By far his best ever showing in the Irish Chart – only ‘American Bad Ass’ back in 2000 entered the Top 30 – at No 30.

 

Basshunter slips a place from No1 to No2 with ‘All I Ever Wanted’ while Jordin Spark’s ‘No Air’ holds steady at No3. This week’s highest new entry is awarded to Dublin’s The Script who enter the Chart at No9 with their second single ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’. Their first single released earlier in the year – ‘We Cry’ – entered the Chart at No18 and peaked at No9.

 

The Top 3 on this week’s Album Chart remain unchanged as Coldplay stay firmly entrenched at the top – the sixth week at No1 for ‘Viva La Vida’ – not since Snow Patrol dominated the Album Chart for the first two months of 2007 with ‘Eyes Open’ has anyone else managed at least 6 consecutive weeks at No1. Basshunter hold onto the No2 spot with ‘Now You’re Gone – The Album’ and Chris Brown’s ‘Exclusive’ digs in at No3. The success of Mamma Mia continues to work it’s magic for Abba as their old greatest hits package – ‘Gold’ – continues its climb up the Chart from No9 to No6. U2 also see old releases re-entering the Chart as their first three albums are remastered and all enter the Top 20: ‘Boy’ at No13, ‘War’ at No16 and ‘October’ at No17.

Kid Rock holds off all challenges this week to take a second week on the No1 spot with ‘All Summer Long’ leaving Basshunter’s ‘All I Ever Wanted’ stationary at No2. With the release of their physical single The Script climb up into the Top 5 from last week’s No9 to this week’s No3 with ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ while Jordin Sparks ‘No Air’ drops a place from No3 to No4.

Dublin’s Keywest see their debut single ‘Livin’ In The Summertime’ enter the Singles Chart at No8 – this week’s highest new entry. This week also sees 2 versions of the same track battling it out for chart supremacy. Nicki Bliss takes her dance version of ‘I Kissed A Girl’ from last week’s No29 to this week’s No14 while the original version by Kate Perry enters the chart at No16 on download only prior to it’s official release.

Coldplay take their seventh week at No1 with ‘Viva La Vida’ on this week’s Album Chart ahead of Basshunter who sticks at No2 and the The Ting Tings whose ‘We Started Nothing’ moves up from No7 to No3. Kid Rock’s 2007 release ‘Rock N Roll Jesus’ enters the Chart for the first time at No4 on the back of his No1 single.

Michael Buble re-enters the Top 10 with ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ after his Donnybrook Stadium concert last weekend while 3 of his other albums re-enter the Top 40: ‘Caught In The Act’ at No19, ‘It’s Time’ at No22 and ‘Michael Buble’ at No33 .

It's not often that a new release from U2 makes its debut at no 98. Live From Paris is apparantly an I-Tunes exclusive. The concert in question is from the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 and can be found as a bonus DVD on the Deluxe edition of the album's 20th anniversary re-issue.

Abba Alchemy

This week’s Album Chart finally sees a change at the top as Abba end Coldplay’s seven week reign at No1. Sixteen Years after its initial release ‘Gold – The Greatest Hits’ gets its third go at the top of the Chart spurred on by the massive success of the Mamma Mia! film. It previously spent three weeks at No1 on its initial release in 1992 and 4 weeks in May 1999. Astonishingly it has spent nearly half of its life since release in the Album Chart.

Despite a very close contest Coldplay have to be content with the No2 spot while Basshunter’s ‘Now You’re Gone – The Album’ is also pushed down a place to No3.

Kid Rock manages to hold on to his grip at the top of the Singles Chart this week for a third week despite a big jump up the chart from Katy Perry who takes her ‘I Kissed A Girl’ from last week’s No16 to this week’s No2 while still only available on download. The Script hold steady at No3 with ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ while The Verve enter the chart at No 14 with ‘Love Is Noise’ taking this week’s Highest New Entry with the first single from their forthcoming Album

Re-Writing The Script

Dublin trio The Script take their brand of Celtic Soul right to the top this week as their self-titled debut album enters this week’s Album Chart at No1. It’s been a successful few months for the band who saw both of their first two singles entering the Top 10 and with this release can claim the second fastest selling album of the year so far as well as having the distinction of being the first Irish band to enter the Album Chart at No1 with their debut since The Thrills achieved the same feat in 2003.

 

Abba’s reign at the top of the Chart was short-lived as they drop a place from last week’s No1 to No2 while Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ also slips a place from No2 to No3. Another debut album claims this week’s highest new entry as Noah and The Whale’s ‘Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down’ enters the Chart at No32.

 

Kid Rock takes a fourth week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘All Summer Long’ as the Top 3 remain unchanged from last week – Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’ holding onto the No2 slot and The Script staying at No3 with ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’. Despite still having no physical release Rihanna continues her climb up the chart, moving from last week’s No7 to this week’s No4, while Nelly is this week’s highest climber – up from No45 to No20 with ‘Body On Me’ (featuring Akon & Ashanti).

After two weeks at No2 on the Singles Chart, Californian singer-songwriter Katy Perry climbs to the top this week with downloads of ‘I Kissed A Girl’, a week ahead of the single’s release on CD.

 

Kid Rock slips to No2 after four weeks at No1 with ‘All Summer Long’, ahead of three non-movers: The Script, Rihanna and Jordin Sparks. Following his death on Saturday 16th August, ‘The Ballad Of Ronnie Drew’ re-enters the chart at No19 this week. The charity single, which spent two weeks at No1 back in March this year, features U2, Kila, The Dubliners and a host of other Irish musicians paying tribute to the legend.

 

The Script take a second week at No1 on the Album Chart this week with their eponymous debut album, heading a Top3 unchanged from last week: Abba’s ‘Gold’ holds at No2 and Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ holds at No3. ‘The Best Of Ronnie Drew’ is unsurprisingly this week’s highest climber, returning to the Top 40 at No24 – well ahead of the album’s previous peak at No37 last December. Similarly, there’s a re-entry for ‘The Definitive Dubliners’ at No50 – a Top 10 album when released back in 2001.

The Verve Follow The Script

 

The Script take a third week at No1 on the Album Chart this week, but the battle for runners-up position is closely fought between The Verve and Slipknot. The Verve end up just 7 sales ahead of their masked rivals, as their aptly-named fourth studio album ‘Forth’ seals a successful comeback at No2.

 

Slipknot are also on album number 4 with ‘All Hope Is Gone’, and this week’s No3 debut matches their previous best – No3 for ‘Iowa’ seven years ago. The Game completes the trio of Top 10 new entries with ‘LAX’ at No8 – ahead of the No12 debut for 2004’s ‘The Documentary’ and matching the No8 debut for 2006’s ‘Doctor’s Advocate’.

 

Katy Perry has a second week at No1 on the Singles Chart this week with downloads of ‘I Kissed A Girl’, heading a Top 10 which shows few changes from last week: The Script climb one place to No2 after three weeks at No3, Kid Rock drops to No3 and Rihanna holds at No4. Metallica have this week’s highest new entry at No14 with downloads of ‘The Day That Never Comes’, the first single from their forthcoming new album ‘Death Magnetic’. This is their 17th hit single in Ireland, and their first since ‘Frantic’ reached No20 five years ago. Eric Prydz has this week’s only other Top 20 new entry with ‘Pjanoo’ at No15, four years after he spent four weeks at No1 with ‘Call On Me’.

Katy Weathers The Blizzards

Katy Perry takes a third week at No1 on the Singles Chart this week with ‘I Kissed A Girl’ - pulling away from the rest of the pack as the CD single version hit the shops this week.

The Blizzards come straight into the chart at No2 with ‘Trust Me I’m A Doctor’ - the first offering from their forthcoming album and their best chart performance to date. Of four earlier Top 10 hits, their previous highest placing was for 2006’s ‘Trouble’ which reached No6. The Script drop a place from last week’s No2 to No3 with ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’, while this week’s highest new entry goes to the Pussycat Dolls whose latest release ‘When I Grow Up’ comes in at No6 on download only.

 

In a quiet week for album releases The Script hold on to the Top Spot for a fourth week on the Album Chart with their self-titled album while the rest of the Top 6 shuffle positions from last week: Abba’s ‘Gold’ climbs back to No2 from last week’s No4, The Verve slip a couple of places to 4, Rihanna’s ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ climbs 2 places to No3 and Coldplay climb back to No5. Miley Cyrus achieves this week’s highest new entry with ‘Breakout’ which enters the chart at No11 – her first album recorded under her own name and not under the Hannah Montana franchise, while The Chemical Brothers see their latest singles collection – ‘Brotherhood’ – come in at No24.
