Glasgow rockers Glasvegas have this week’s highest new entry at No2 with their self-titled debut album, just ahead of Metallica who have the next new entry at No3 for their ninth studio album ‘Death Magnetic’ which was rush-released on Wednesday and therefore charts on just two days sales. It’s their first studio album since 2003’s ‘St. Anger’, which debuted at No4 (after just one day’s sales) and took two weeks to climb to the top. Katy Perry takes a fourth week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘I Kissed A Girl’ but there’s a challenge from the Pussycat Dolls who climb from No6 to No2 with ‘When I Grow Up’, released this week on CD. This is their sixth Irish hit single and the fourth to reach No2 – but only their debut ‘Don’t Cha’ made it all the way to the top. This week’s highest new entry comes in at No8 for Kings Of Leon with downloads of ‘Sex On Fire’, the first release from their upcoming fourth album ‘Only By The Night’ - and their most successful single to-date in Ireland, beating the No13 peak for ‘Fans’ last year. The next new entry is at No11 - ‘Just Stand Up!’, a charity single performed by an all-star line-up of female artists including Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige & Rihanna, in support of ‘Stand Up To Cancer’. Their 2007 offering ‘Because Of The Times’ debuted at No2, 2004’s ‘Aha Shake Heartbreak’ debuted at No3 (although did take the top spot 4 months later) and their first album ‘Youth And Young Manhood’ entered the chart at No34. The Script head back up the Chart from last week’s No4 to No2 with their self-titled debut album while Rihanna’s ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ also does a u-turn, up to No3 from last week’s No5. The Pussycat Dolls have this week’s next new entry at No6 with their second album ‘Doll Domination’ – improving on their 2005 debut ‘PCD’ which entered the Chart at No42 and peaked at No7. The Kings Of Leon hold onto the No1 spot on the Singles Chart with ‘Sex On Fire’ for a second week with Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’ also unmoveable at No2. This is her 17th hit single in Ireland over eight years, and the third to hit the top spot following ‘Get The Party Started’ and ‘Lady Marmalade’ (with Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim and Mya). The Kings Of Leon drop to No2 after two weeks at No1 with ‘Sex On Fire’, but maintain a healthy lead over this week’s next new entry for T.I. and Rihanna’s ‘Live Your Life’ at No3. Boyzone have the third Top 10 new entry at No6 with ‘Love You Anyway’, returning to the charts after a nine year break. Between 1994 and 1999 they registered 17 hits, all of which made the Top 3 including eight No1’s. In the same year that Boyzone had their first hit with ‘Working My Way Back To You’ (1994), Oasis also made their first impact on the Irish Charts with ‘Live Forever’ which reached No17 – and they too have a new entry in this week’s chart with ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’ at No12. Unlike Boyzone, they haven’t had a mid-career break and this is their 26th hit single in Ireland. Despite losing their Singles crown, Kings Of Leon hold for a second week at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Only By The Night’, selling more than three times as many as the nearest challenger – Rihanna’s ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ at No2. In a fairly static Top 10, Dublin outfit Fight Like Apes have this week’s highest new entry at No9 with their debut album ‘Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion’. Just behind them at No10, boy soprano Andrew Johnston has the next new entry with ‘One Voice’, his first release since coming third in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. Pink dips to No2 after two weeks on top with ‘So What’, ahead of Kings Of Leon who slip to No3. Two of last week’s new entries leap 10 places into this week’s Top 10: Snow Patrol up from No14 to No4 with ‘Take Back The City’, propelled by the release of the CD version, and The Killers up from No17 to No7 with ‘Human’. 2007 X-Factor winner Leon Jackson has this week’s highest new entry at No8 with ‘Don’t Call This Love’, his first release since ‘When You Believe’ which spent three weeks at No1 last Christmas on the back of his win. There’s no change at the top of the Album Chart this week, with Kings Of Leon at No1 with ‘Only By The Night’ for a fourth week and Oasis holding at No2 with ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ for a second week. This is their third album to reach the No1 spot – 2006’s ‘Eyes Open’ also debuted at the top while 2003’s ‘Final Straw’ had to wait almost 9 months from release to make the top of the Chart. Pink also releases her fifth album this week - ‘Funhouse’ - and enters the Chart at No2 - the best debut position for any of her releases. Her last album ‘I’m Not Dead’ in 2006 never made it higher than No9 although 2001’s ‘Mizundaztood’ did make it to the top of the chart in 2003 – over a year after its initial release. AC/DC drop three places from last week’s No1 to this week’s No4 while the No3 spot is occupied by another new entry – Celine Dion’s ‘My Love – The Essential Collection’. Bloc Party and Katie Melua also break into this week’s Top 20 with their new releases at No’s 12 & 17 respectively. The Singles Chart also sees a change at the top as the 2008 X-Factor Finalists take their version of Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero’ to No1. Girls Aloud move up two places from No4 to No2 with ‘The Promise’ while Pink’s ‘So What’ drops two places to No3. Beyoncé achieves the only other new entry in this week’s Top 20 with ‘If I Were A Boy’ – the first track from her new album – entering the chart at No12 on download only. It’s her fifth album to make it to the top of the Album Chart and the first for six years when 2002’s ‘A New Day Has Come’ spent two weeks at No1. As the Christmas season approaches the market sees the traditional rush of new releases hitting both the stores and the Album Chart. The Top 10 provides a home for four new releases this week: Il Divo’s fifth album ‘The Promise’ which enters the Chart at No2 – their best debut position to date, Mario Rosenstock’s ‘Gift Grub 9: How To Look Gift Naked’ which enters at No4 - not quite a match for last year’s ‘Gift Grub 8’ which debuted at No2, Christina Aguilera’s singles compilation – ‘Keeps Getting’ Better – A Decade Of Hits’ which occupies the No9 spot and lastly this year’s Nob Nation offering – ‘Nob Nation 2: The Recession Album’ which enters at No10 – a little short of last year’s No5 debut. Enya and The Stereophonics see their new releases hitting the Top 20 at Nos 13 and 16 respectively. In contrast this week’s Singles Chart sees no new entries in the Top 10 as The X-Factor Finalists hold on to No1 for a third week although with strong competition from Beyoncé whose ‘If I Were A Boy’ climbs one place from last week’s No3 to No2. Katy Perry’s ‘Hot ‘N’ Cold’, which has climbed a place each week for the last three weeks, continues its path upwards as it climbs from last week’s No 4 to this week’s No3. Shakyfan's Commentary A rapid return for Live Your Life at 9 which would again suggest that it was unavailable for download last week. Unless anyone knows different?? And it seems there's no shifting the Galway Girl - back for an incredible 73rd week. One to watch next week is an album that some people are predicting big things for. Sony have apparantly pumped a lot of money into the debut offering from "The Priests". Unlike acts like the Police and Presidents of the USA the trio are what they say they are - all working in parishes in County Antrim. An interesting entry on the album chart at 31. Back in 1987 to mark their 25th anniversary RTE's Late Late Show presented a special tribute to the Dubliners. A couple of weeks ago they broadcasted an edited version of the programme and last Friday the full 1 hr 45 mins version was released on DVD. A companion CD featuring all the musical performances from it was also released and as well as tracks from the band themselves (including their collaberation with the Pogues on The Irish Rover) it includes the likes of U2 performing Red Hill Mining Town.
