Complaints have poured into the BBC over Jools Holland's New Year countdown television show - because the apparently "live" programme was recorded 11 days before December 31.

It meant the Hootenanny was riddled with anomalies that left many people baffled and angry.

And it came at the end of year in which the BBC was embroiled in controversy over faked programmes misleading the public.

The most glaring hoot on the Hootenanny, screened on BBC2, was the presence of Kylie Minogue - who in fact was seeing in the New Year in her native Australia.

Others gaffes included guest Lenny Henry getting the year wrong and the midnight countdown apparently being out of synch with the actual time.

Scores of viewers posted complaints on the BBC's official Points of View website. "In an era where the BBC and television in general is continually accused of conning the public, it amazes me that this sort of pretence of what the date is still goes on all the time," wrote one.

"I personally find all this a complete insult to the viewer. The Hootenanny would work just as well without all the constant 'lying' about the time/date."

Another viewer asked: "Are you telling me this show is not live? Really? I'm gobsmacked. I wondered why Jools made so many mistakes referring to 'next year' etc. What a sham."

The show started with Holland climbing into the Tardis to "time travel" into 2008. Adding to the festive feel of the event, the celebrity audience - including Doctor Who star David Tennant, Sir Paul McCartney, Lulu, Mika, the Kaiser Chiefs, John Simm, Dawn French, Meera Syal and Steve McClaren - were shown clapping along in time to the music, wearing black ties and sipping champagne.

This is the second time that the Hootenanny, a festive spin-off from Holland's Later With ... show, has sparked controversy.

Five years ago, British rapper Ms Dynamite left viewers baffled when she appeared on the programme at the same time as performing at the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh-Last year, the BBC was caught up in several rows over misleading viewers.

It temporarily axed all phone contests after admitting that shows including Blue Peter, Sport Relief and Children in Need had all faked winners.

In October, it became embroiled in the scandal in which a trailer was misleadingly edited to show footage of the Queen walking out of a photo-shoot - when she was actually walking in.

Readers of the Radio Times were warned that the Hootenanny show was recorded before December 31.

And last night the BBC defended the programme. A spokesman said: "The sequence which saw Jools travel through time was specifically included to make clear to viewers that the programme was not broadcast live to air.

"We also clearly stated in the pre-publicity material sent to the Press that the programme would be recorded in advance.

"Jools' Annual Hootenanny is an idealised New Year's Eve party with a line-up that would surely be impossible to deliver on December 31."

The audience who complained are either ignorant or stupid, as that intro made it blatantly clear it was a recorded show.

Mind you having watched the show, if it had gone off live on New Year's Eve, then I would have fancied Macca's chances of copping off with Kylie.

This lady who I work with, her dad organises a new years eve party every year with family and friends and guess who was there......................Paul Macca and guess who was there with him................his daughter. Apparently his said that it was done 2 weeks ago!!!
it has been well known of several years that this show isn't shown live. The people complaining are obviously stupid.
Oh good grief. I'm sure there were reports a couple weeks ago about the recording of this programme. I've known for years that it's pre-recorded. Yes, it makes the whole thing a bit false but it's hardly in the same bracket as getting people to phone in for a competition when the winners or potential winners have already been chosen. As Craig said, some people really do have too much time on their hands.

lol.. yes we noticed that aswell! omg...what a couple that would be!!! still..better then peg leg anyday!
