I thought they'd at least stock the Hoosiers and Celine Dion, assuming they are actually out today.

I don't know why they'd stock Hoosiers. It'd only sell about 4 copies throughout the UK.

British Sea Power would be a much more sensible option.

Do they sell more downloads then?

Yes, Worried About Ray only spent TWO weeks in the physical chart and never made the top 20. You only needed about 1500 copies to make it.

They only stock the top 20 anyhow

And some other selected singles. I went in last week and they had copies of "Headlines", "No U Hang Up" and various other singles that had left the top 40 in a cardboard display box.

Same at mine, with loads of Leona, Sugababes (Both Change and About You Now) and Girls Aloud, thats it :manson: All in a shambolic cardboard cut out box :(

We don't even have a Woolies anymore. :/
They should advertise Singles better..
It's fun trying to find them in the different stores. I wonder how many people give up. Then, most are out of stock.

It makes you laugh, when they stick their own singles chart on the wall...and then don`t bother stocking singles, anyway, which is just plain stupid. The physical should be iven more exposure. The download chart, is heading for a takeover bid. It`s a sad day, and no mistake.

There was a news report last year on single sales, that 70% of the single market are downloads, gives you a rough idea how many percentage is left for physicals.

Woolies, like HMV only stock "their" chart. Up until recently, it was more or less guaranteed if Woolie's didn't stock your single then bye bye any chance of a Top 30 chart position. I think it's terrible really, I didn't think it's a fair chance for any artist - who is a shop like Woolworths (which isn't even a proper record store) to by default dictate who will have a hit?

Think about it this way - in many towns Woolworth's IS the only record store and only hardcore fans will travel to the next town or nearest city to pick up a single release. The download thing is obviously affecting the impact Woolie's chart has on the proper UK singles chart, but the store still affects the albums chart - have off the back catalogue dreck that fills up the chart is 'coz Woolie's is over concerned with cheap compilation promos.

Our Woolies has a big portable free-standing singles display made of heavy cardboard with 20 slots but most are "out of stock" nearly every week so not a lot of point even having it at all.

I was thinking, "the older generation" i.e. the over 50s etc...obviously I wouldn`t expect them, to buy singles, but what does the "older" person listen too? I was brought up in a family, that were all much older than me (being a child, to a mother and father, in their 40s, even then). So, obviously I was basically brought up on easy listening, on the original sound of Radio 2, in the early days. Certainly in the early - mid 70s, they were bashing out Sinatra, Bill Haley etc, but what do people over 50 listen too, today? There isn`t really any national stations, around to cater for them. Certainly not todays Radio 2!! I suppose Smooth Radio, is on the edge of "easy listening", but they don`t stick to that type of music at all, playing Springsteen, and other rockier people. So what does the average 50plus or older person actually listen too, in 2008? Do they even buy albums, currently in the charts?

The single track is most certainly becoming a younger persons game, via downloads etc. So, an age gap is rapidily appearing in the music genre.

yeah the last two singles were promoed/played to point of irretation - this has a small clip on freshly squeezed - and if they dont play it - nobody knows it exists - as nobodys intersting in bands only things to fill up space on their iPods

singles chart seems to becoming an airplay chart.

but as for age - i dont know - i suppose depend on how old is old and what they are doing in their life/what their life is doing?? well my mum listens to smooth in the car as they are all a bunch of r*t**** on radio 2 and should be locked up in a home.

she likes smooth and all those (mostly blue-eyed) soul things like lighthouse family, simply red, will young and lemar. and for xmas bought her 100 hits of soul

but with smooth it might be due to that kind of black music becomeing such a white mainstream music as well over a period of time - i dont know - and as an AC format not as high-brow arty as jazz. (..mmmm nice!)

i guess all the dadrocking lovers of Q magazine/virgin radio white van man, ages 30 - 45 will be downloading whatever dadrock is played on their radio loads of time - so probs they are all guilty for making Ruby get back into the chart i guess??

btw Springsteen on Smooth?? was it for Xmas?? they only seem to have 6 records and one seemed to be a Paul Young record that is played at exactly 3:12 each afternoon

btw when Tom Baxter came on smooth today i wanted to scream at the radio 'BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING' - but this would have probs made my mum to crash her car

mum thought this went on for ages as well

i guess they buy things from tescos - anything from take that and greatest hits things to foster and allen, as its easy and there when they go round the store???

I would love to know what stores you all shop at! I work in a Woolworths store and our stock came in this week and we were all gobsmacked at the fact theres so much! Now I only do an hour on Entertainment on a Saturday (and when I'm usually needed when they are busy and Wed Aft) But what came in today's load was AMAZING - We do actually have every single in chart!

And as someone pointed out - some stores have "Cardboard Single Stands" - that all depends on the size of the store. Another person also pointed out, "out of stocks" - well have you heard of the "Big Red Book" & "In Store Ordering??" means you can get it that way - i should know as thats my department and I get the funky Lime Green Top too! haha
