Lennox devastated at record label snub

(Tuesday January 15, 2008 10:25 AM)

Annie Lennox was left devastated after she was dropped from her record label - and has branded the move a "kick in the teeth".

The former Eurythmics star was stunned when Sony BMG stopped answering her phone calls just weeks before her contract was due to expire.

Lennox, 53, insists she was shocked at the way she was treated by the company which once hailed her as "one of the finest musical voices of the age".

She says, "They totally ignored me. It was bizarre. It was a kick in the teeth. They didn't return my phone calls or emails for three weeks. I'm trying to find out what's behind it.

"Probably a good thing I'm no longer with them - mild understatement. Unless it's them trying to tell me something... Hello!"

The singer admits she has been left contemplating her future in the music industry.

She adds, "It feels like I'm spent, as if I've completely run out of energy. I'm going to take my time over the coming months to figure out what to do with this freedom."

Lennox's last album, Songs of Mass Destruction, charted at number nine in the Billboard 200 chart in October 2007, selling a healthy 78,000 copies during its first week of release in the U.S.

Out with the old and in with the new. What a disgusting way to go about it.

Thanks TT.

Fukk them... Annie should just go on the internet, it worked perfectly well for Radiohead, Prince and Mick Hucknall....

But it just proves to me the attitudes of Sony/BMG really.. I remember when they bought out metal label Music For Nations and basically just dropped about two thirds of the roster of bands in one go.... A bunch of fukkin' corporate raiders they are, no respect whatsoever for the artists.... <_<

She's not even selling badly is she? I mean, she's not selling HUGELY but not badly. How odd :(

That's Sony's overall attitude though mate... You gotta shift MILLIONS of units, and quickly, or they'll drop you..... Doing "not bad" aint enough for these c/unts....

I actually didn't realise the music industry was quite that cut-throat. I mean, you look at people like Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Jamelia who still have record deals after their spectacular disappointments, and they're not even international artists. Obviously their record label/s is/are yet to succumb to such chop and change tactics

SBMG don't give a fukk about any of their artists, unless your name is Leona Lewis. :/

She should sign to a company that gives a toss about it's music & quality, like Universal.

Are they on Sony/BMG though....?

What a slap in the face for Annie, :( I know she's 54 but her voice and performances put all these flash in the pan, supposed superstars in the shade, I'm shocked and saddened that she's been treated this way.
that's awful o: Sony BMG really are an awful label - what a disgusting way to treat one of your most established and long serving artists.
30 years with them, and something like 80 bloody million sold, and this is how they threat her??? <_<

What a dreadful way to treat Annie after she has been with them all this time , no wonder she is upset.

This has now been posted on PJ.

Her label have issued a statement saying that while she's reached the end of her contract she hasn't in fact been dropped and if she would like to sign a new contract with them they would be very happy.

So who knows!

This is disgusting. A complete legend like Annie Lennox should be safe on ANY label, and usually if you're such a legend you don't have as much pressure on you to shift units because you're an icon proven over time. Dear Lord.

Exactly, she's at a stage where she dosn't have to prove anyone anymore.

Jamelia was already dropped. I expect Sophie could follow unless the GH is a really unexpected success. But you never know, if they kept her on after how Shoot From The Hip and Trip The Light Fantastic sold.

That's really quite awful of them to drop Annie like that, I'd say the album did pretty well and it seemed to hang around for a few weeks too.

Are you all completely ignoring the comment from Mr PJ? As an insider I'd say you should be trusting that. If she hasn't re-signed with them but has the option to, she's got no reason to be upset.

That's lovely and all but how can they keep her on if she isn't making them any money? She doesn't have the right to be kept signed regardless; she should have to work for it like any other artist, and her last single (or the one that got all the press; 'Women' or something. Or 'Sing'. Something lol.) was a total flop. I can't say I know what the album did though.
