January 17, 200817 yr it was... different! No studio audience, the Christmas TOTP special that year was just Noel Edmonds linking old TOTP clips from that year - I assume the "live" recording was abandoned - the BBC were embroiled in many disputes late in 1978. I quite enjoyed the programme, even though a good % of the music was terrible!
January 17, 200817 yr I enjoyed this too. Some of the biggest hits of the 70s (and all time) were all in this programme. Mull of Kintyre,You're the one that I want,Rivers of Babylon,Summer Nights,Mary's Boy Child .... As well as the naff ones like The Smurfs ,Brighouse & Rastrick Band and Brotherhood of man. Love Darts & Showaddywaddy.
January 17, 200817 yr Yes, it was unlike most TOTP Christmas specials. Mixed bag of music, and I see Boney M had a good year, think Noel said they had sold 4,000,000 singles that year.
January 18, 200817 yr yeah, he said 4m singles sold, which would be pretty close: Rivers Of Babylon probably sold about 1.9m in 1978 Mary's Boy Child - 1.6m Rasputin - shipped at least 500,000 copies Belfast - will have sold in the low tens of thousands in 1978 the cut off sales date for the programme was probably the middle of December (the Christmas chart was compiled on sales to 16/12/78 as no chart was produced the following week, and certainly not by the time TOTP would have been recorded), so MBC had probably sold perhaps 400,000 copies less at the time. But it would have shipped those copies by then.
