January 22, 200817 yr Author Nothing for Keira Knightely? :( I thought Keira and James McAvoy would be dead certs for nomos. :manson: :(
January 22, 200817 yr VERY disappointed (but not exactly surprised...) that there are no nominations at all for the rather brilliant "Assassination of Jesse James" (beyond a supporting actor nomination), "Control" or "American Gangster"... What's so special about "Juno"?? I mean, really...? It's pretty lightweight stuff by comparison to the three I mentioned....

It's just a difference between an A and an A+ really... A fantastic actor, who truly does deserve it for two brilliant performances.. The guy never disappoints... Viggo Mortensen- Eastern Promises Best Actress Cate Blanchett- Elizabeth: The Golden Age Julie Christie- Away From Her Marion Cotillard - La vie en Rose Laura Linney - The Savages Ellen Page - Juno Best Supporting Actor Casey Affleck - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men - I was really torn between this guy and Affleck tbh, but as good as Affleck was, Bardem's performance just truly chills you to the bone. Every nuance, every mannerism, every utterance in this incredibly finely tuned performance is laced with intent, menace and foreboding.. Anton Chigurh will surely go down in cinema history as one of the sceen's greatest villains, he is the personification of all the irrational, random, unreasoning violence that exists in society today... Philip Seymour Hoffman - Charlie Wilson's War Hal Holbrook - Into the Wild Tom Wilkinson - Michael Clayton Best Supporting Actress Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There Ruby Dee - American Gangster Saoirse Ronan - Atonement Amy Ryan - Gone Baby Gone Tilda Swinton - Michael Clayton Best Cinematography Roger Deakins - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Seamus McGarvey - Atonement Janusz Kaminski - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Roger Deakins - No Country for Old Men Robert Elswit - There Will Be Blood Best Documentary Feature No End in Sight Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience Sicko Taxi to the Dark Side War/Dance Best Film Editing Christopher Rouse - The Bourne Ultimatum Juliette Welfling - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Jay Cassidy - Into the Wild Roderick Jaynes - No Country for Old Men Dylan Tichenor - There Will Be Blood Best Foreign Language Film Beaufort (Israel) The Counterfeiters (Austria) Katyn (Poland) Mongol (Kazakhstan) 12 (Russia)
January 22, 200817 yr So glad Juno got a bunch of nominations. <3 Such a lovely film and clearly the best of 2007 for me.
January 23, 200817 yr It's pretty lightweight stuff by comparison to the three I mentioned.... I dont know, as i havent seen it but i guess it will be this years Little Miss Sunshine - i have a feeling it will be a bit like Slums Of Beverley Hills in tone when i see it - and talking of which i see Best Orginial Screenplay has got a nod to Jenkin's The Savages and good to see Michael Clayton in there - as it was kinda overlooked when it came out here
January 23, 200817 yr it's shameful that, for the second year in a row, the brilliant James McAvoy has been ignored by the Academy - his performance in the superb Atonement is way and above any other I've seen this year. And Atonement is head-and-shoulders above any of the other movies in the Best Movie category, too - No Country For Old Men? Eh? Bardem saves a very, very humdrum movie..... he's literally the only watchable thing in this drab, pretentious movie, which just seems to be similar to a thousand other films in this genre. I never understand the fuss about Daniel Day-Lewis, either - if there were awards for hammy over-acting, he'd sweep the board - a baffling choice. I was hoping, too, that This Is England would have got a surprise nomination for the young actor - his performance was breathtaking - I suppose the Academy only recognises small, qurky movies when they're American.... Let's hope the marvellous Julie Christie picks up the gong for the heartbreaking Away From Her, too - what a fantastic actress she is.

I dont know as i havent watched No Country For Old Men yet - but as its Coens i will probs like it - i didnt care much for Atonement, tho that tracking shot was a work of genius. out of the films i've seen Michael Clayton and Atonement - the former would get my vote

Bardem saves a very, very humdrum movie..... he's literally the only watchable thing in this drab, pretentious movie, which just seems to be similar to a thousand other films in this genre. Totally disagree Russ.. NCFOM, is absolutely nothing like a typical crime thriller, at all... From the way it starts with Chigurh sneaking up behind the sherrif to the way it ends with Tommy Lee Jones recounting the dream of his father, there is really nothing that is ordinary or formulaic about it.. The dialogue is excellent (Tarantino wishes he could still write like this...), and the direction from the Coens just could not be better... Nah, you're wrong mate, the Coen Brothers have created a modern masterpiece here which will be talked about decades from now.. I'm in the process of reading the book atm... Loving it...

Sam Reilly's excellent performance in "Control" got ignored as well....
January 23, 200817 yr I dont know, as i havent seen it but i guess it will be this years Little Miss Sunshine It's nowhere near as good as "Little Miss Sunshine" IMO... I could actually understand that one getting a nomination, the inclusion of "Juno" just has me totally baffled....

I could actually understand that one getting a nomination, the inclusion of "Juno" just has me totally baffled.... maybe it for getting a younger auds demographic to the netcasts/broadcasts (if it goes ahead on tv) to sell all those vit C cola beverages and Scion SUV's to???
January 23, 200817 yr Suprsing stuff. Jesse James, and American Gangster both should be up for best film. And is'nt it just typical of the Oscars to snub a film like The Bourne Ultiminatum. It is clearly by a bloody mile one of the best films of 2007, and it did amazingly not only commerically but got fantastic reviews all around. But I guess as it is a Hollywood action blockbuster, the Acedemy have turned their noses up at it  Suprised Michael Clayton is nominated for so many awards :o I have no seen it, but don't remember that big a deal being made about it on it's release. Although I do recall it being said alot that it was Cloody's best performance to date.

It has you baffled even though it's appeared in nearly every critics end of year top 10? I mean, I adored Little Miss Sunshine, but I loved Juno even more. Its script was witty and clever and the story was heartwarming, plus Ellen Page put on an absolutely amazing performance, even better than Hard Candy imo. While LMS had good acting also, I don't think that any of them stood out as much as Ellen Page did in Juno.

Paul Greengrass' superb direction should easily have got him a nomination...

Although I do recall it being said alot that it was Cloody's best performance to date. A great performance by Clooney, but the film itself is pretty standard-fare "legal drama" really.. Not that I didn't enjoy it, I did. But I saw individual episodes of "Shark", "Damages" or "Law and Order" that were at least as good as this film....
