Posted January 27, 200817 yr Basshunter makes it 3 weeks at the top as Adele fails to take the top spot Swedish DJ Basshunter’s Now You’re Gone has defied the odds to take the UK No.1 spot for a third consecutive week. The song which was a hit all around Europe in its original guise, Boten Anna, is one of the biggest selling dance hits in the UK for years. Hotly tipped new talent Adele was expected to move up a place to the top following the physical release of Chasing Pavements. Despite leading Basshunter on downloads all week, her physical sales let her down and she stays at her entering position of No.2 for a second week. All is not lost however as it could still climb to the top as Basshunter’s physical sales start to drop. Her debut album 19 is released on Monday and is expected to be a huge selling No.1 album following in the footsteps of other recent British female success stories such as Kate Nash, Amy Winehouse and Amy MacDonald. Nickelback score the biggest hit of their career this week as Rockstar moves up three places to a new peak of No.3. Outkast’s Hey Ya similarly returned from outside the top twenty into the top three in early 2004. Their previous biggest hit was How You Remind Me, a No.4 hit in 2002 which has sold almost half a million copies in the UK. That song returns to the top 75 singles chart at No.65 this week. Rihanna is also climbing this week once again with Don’t Stop The Music, the 4th single from her No.1 album Good Girl Gone Bad. It has moved 37-30-16-12-6-5-4 in the UK top 40 so far and still has not yet received its full physical release. Lupe Fiasco and Matthew Santos slide a place to No.5 with Superstar which is on its third week in the top ten. Britney Spears spends a third week in the top ten with Piece Of Me which swaps places with Nickelback, falling to No.6. Kelly Rowland is the sole newcomer to the top ten this week with Work. Though not officially credited, it is largely sales of the Freemasons remix that have propelled this song from No.31 to No.7 in the space of seven days with the aforementioned remix being added to download outlets earlier in the week. It duly gives Kelly her 5th UK top ten single away from Destiny’s Child. The others were Dilemma (#1, 2002), Stole (#2, 2003), Can’t Nobody (#5, 2003) and Like This (#4, 2007). It receives its physical release on Monday and is near enough certain to move into the top five if not challenging Adele and Basshunter for next week’s top spot. After climbing to a new peak of No.8 last week with Elvis Ain’t Dead, British indie trio Scouting For Girls stay there this week on their 3rd week in the top ten. It has so far moved 33-28-26-17-10-8-8 in the top 40 with its physical release coming in the second week of that run. Soulja Boy’s Crank That is down two places on its 8th week in the top ten while Robyn rounds off the top ten with a non-mover for Be Mine. Her other previous two singles continue to have success too this week. With Every Heartbeat is a non-mover at No.39 while Handle Me jumps back seventeen places to No.50, giving the Swede three songs in the top 50 simultaneously. Rihanna also achieves that feat this week, and indeed has had three songs in the top 40 for seven weeks now. The top ten therefore features two Swedes, a Canadian, four Americans, two Brits and Barbados’ Rihanna. The highest new entry goes to British born Asian singer Jay Sean. The singer’s top 20 return is perhaps surprising though it is worth noting that he has had three previous top 20 singles in the UK. Dance With You (#12, 2003), Eyes On You (#6, 2004) both of which were with The Rishi Rich Project and his only other solo hit was Stolen (#4, 2004). However it is perhaps refreshing in a UK chart climate that has been seemingly devoid of any Asian talent since its chart peak in 2003/2004 when Jay was having regular success as were acts such as 2Play, Raghav, Punjabi MC and Bhangra Knights, all of whom achieved top ten singles. Kanye West’s Homecoming has not been physically released yet but slides three places to No.12. Timbaland and Mark Ronson’s former mega selling top three singles Apologize and Valerie are both down two places while Alicia Keys jumps back up six places to No.15 with her No.6 hit single No One. Leona Lewis proves that despite already having over 800,000 sales, there is still some demand for Bleeding Love as it climbs a place to No.16 this week. The next big climber is new British male talent David Jordan. His debut single Place In My Heart made next to no impact late last year but his new single Sun Goes Down, a quirky pop song, jumps from No.56 to No.22 this week on downloads alone. Kylie Minogue continues an achingly slow climb up the chart with Wow, the second single to be taken from X. Though it is receiving good airplay, the video has not aired yet and as soon as it does, a significant climb will be expected to give Kylie another UK top ten single. As it stands, Wow has so far had this chart run 32-28-43-29-27-26 in the top 75. American female R & B singer Mary J Blige has never achieved the same levels as success in the UK as in her homeland but she has achieved seven top ten hits to date including duets with U2, Wyclef Jean, Method Man and George Michael. Perhaps her most memorable single though was her 2001 No.8 hit Family Affair. Her new single Just Fine jumps nineteen places into the top 40 this week at No.28 and is released physically on Monday. Amy MacDonald’s This Is The Life has been an enduring hit single despite never climbing higher than No.28 and climbs back up two places this week to No.31. She has moved 28-35-37-40-28-33-31 on her seven weeks in the top 40 so far. Her next single Run is out in early March. Welsh rock act Bullet For My Valentine have the next new entry to the top 40 this week with their new single Scream Aim Fire which debuts at No.34. Their biggest UK hit to date is the 2006 single All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me) which peaked at No.29. Rihanna’s all conquering single Umbrella refuses to go away and has spent 37 weeks in the UK top 50 including 34 of those in the top 40. It slides a place this week to No.35. The only other notable move in this week’s top 40 is for Newton Faulkner’s Dream Catch Me. The single moves back to the top 40 at No.37 this week having originally peaked at No.7 in August last year. Scouting For Girls spend a second week as the UK’s No.1 albums act this week with their self titled debut album staying at the top. It is likely to be toppled next week though by Adele’s 19, the first significant new release of 2008. Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant’s collaboration album with singer Alison Krauss has proved increasingly more popular in the last few weeks and jumps up to No.2 this week. Amy MacDonald slides a place to No.3 with This Is The Life while Newton Faulkner stays at No.4 with Hand Built By Robots. The Hoosiers jump back to No.5 with their former No.1 album The Trick To Life. Take That are down three places to No.6 with Beautiful World while Lupe Fiasco scores his first top ten album with The Cool which debuts at No.7 this week. Rihanna’s back up a place to No.8 with Good Girl Gone Bad while Mika slides a couple of places with Life In Cartoon Motion at No.9. With Rockstar in the singles top three for the first time, Nickelback’s 2005 album All The Right Reasons sees a huge reversal in fortune jumping into the top ten for the first time this week. It originally peaked at No.13 on its original release. Next week’s No.1 seemingly has three likely contenders. Basshunter will be aiming for a fourth week in control with Now You’re Gone while Adele will be hoping to climb a place with Chasing Pavements. Kelly Rowland’s Work should also climb into the top 3 following its physical release on Monday. Other singles released physically that should make their presence felt in the top 40 are due from Elliot Minor, Hot Chip, Mary J Blige and One Night Only.

It has so far moved 33-28-26-17-10-8-8 in the top 40 with its physical release coming in the second week of that run Amazing how this has climbed since the physical release week. However it sure must be high on the airplay charts as it is being played loads. Goes to check position. Edits to say yep. No.2. Thanks for another good report. Edited January 28, 200817 yr by dindy
