My vote goes to Mariah Carey and 'Can't Take That Away (Mariahs Theme)'.

This is an album track from the album 'Rainbow' and in my opinion is her most personal song. The vocals are really heartfelt and powerful. It's a proper belter of a song with no vocal trickery.

It's a real fans favourite and she always performs it live in concert.

If you can find a performance of your choice on www.youtube.com, please add the link

Please check out the link below for a live performance of the song.

Shakira: Estoy Aqui @ MTV Unplugged.

The way she teases the audience with the crescendo then heads back to the second verse, and she produces hits in her voice which adds detail. The way she goes from a quiet meow to a loud roar: no other artist can do it the way she does. Also, the holding notes at the end are fcuking SPECTACULAR. if you didnt think she could sing, take a listen to it and you can see what an amazing singer she is. the holding notes last over a minute and she hardly breathes! :o

If you listen to anastacia's third album, you will realise the power, the strengh and the emotion behind each track

It's stand out from all her other albums because she can hit notes no one thought she can reach

but the song Seasons Change is probaly a good example for vocal. It's big, it's powerfull, it's deep and it's rocky

Whitney Houston - I will always love you is obviously very high up their.

Don't think it is the best though but definatly one of them.

Whitney Houston - I will always love you, jessica simpson i wanna love you forever , mariah carey - hero / Without You

100% awesome :o

It's on the B side of Switch It On. If you've not heard it, you are missing something great!

Kelly Clarkson - A moment like this  / Whitney Houston - I will always love you / Mariah Carey - Hero / Christina aguilera - beautiful (when she sang it live at the grammys)

Can't stand Mariah Carey's version of Without you :( But you brought to mind another best vocal performance - Harry Neilsons' Without You - never been bettered IMO :)

Indeed Will does an awesome version of this Donny Hathaway track, but it's even more awsome live, especially his version for the radio 2 concert from the Mermaid .

I really don't like Neilsons version to be honest. :(

pink and steven tyler - misery

and i'm not just sayin that cuz its a pink song, i really think their voices sound good together

yeah twas good ^_^

Minnie Riperton 'Loving You'

scott walker, dusty springfield, early stevie wonder, aretha franklin, kate bush, all have very distinctive strong vocals...

and scott walker fists great slabs of pork, you wouldnt get mariah doing that on her album (even though it would be surreal to watch on a making of dvd   )

and kate bush she's experimental too, wasnt it washing machines on her last album?

I'm not expecting to get any converts here, but I reckon if I just tell you the names you wont really know what the fukk I'm on about, so here are a few vids of the individuals concerned just to put things into an actual context...

Enjoy....

1. Tarja Teruenen (ex-Nightwish singer) - a wonderfully gifted, classically trained opera singer who now has a solo career, but was the face of Finnish rock band Nightwish. "Sleeping Sun" is a gorgeous song which really gets across her talents. One of Nightwish's more restrained tracks...

2. Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering) - The Gathering are a Dutch band who have been around for ages, but their sound is clearly defined by the quite extraordinary voice of Anneke. The song is called "Leaves"

3. Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) - Another Dutch band, and one of these bands who are being annoyingly compared with Evanescence (even though they've been around for far longer, so the influence is clearly the other way round.....). Sharon's voice has changed a bit over the years, I think now her voice has more definition now than in the earlier material. This song is called "Angels".

4. Christina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) - Italian band, and again, another one of these bands who influenced Evanescence but never get any credit for it in the music press. This video is an acoustic version of their song "Heaven's A Lie". I just love the stripped-down-ness of this version...

I can honestly say these singers have a quality to them that just makes me go weak at the knees and a bit misty-eyed, I just love the way they can really project their voices in a live situation. Really powerful singers...
