The New England Patriots will become the first NFL team ever to go unbeaten through a 19-game season if they beat the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

The Patriots, led by quarterback Tom Brady, have already set new records for points scored in a season with 589.

And they have their sights set on a fourth Super Bowl title in seven years.

But the Giants boast the league's leading defence, plus quarterback Eli Manning, and have already upset Dallas and Green Bay in the play-offs.

Everyone wants that highlight that shows that you kicked the field goal to help your team win

They have set an NFL single-season record with 10 straight victories away from home, including a 13-10 win over Miami at London's Wembley Stadium in October.

Scottish-born kicker Lawrence Tynes missed a field goal attempt at Wembley and two more in the NFC title decider in Green Bay before sealing victory with a 47-yard kick.

And he says he can handle the pressure if the game comes down to him kicking for victory.

"People ask 'Have you always dreamed about kicking a field goal in the Super Bowl?' I have this week," said Tynes.

"Everyone wants that highlight that shows that you kicked the field goal to help your team win the game."

Tynes is joined in the Giants line-up in Phoenix by fellow British-born star Osi Umenyiora - the defensive end grew up in London until the age of seven.

"The fact that we're both here representing the UK is amazing," he said. "Hopefully, that will bring more fans to the game."

The only other team to have won all their games including a Super Bowl were the 1972 Miami Dolphins, before the NFL season was expanded by two games.

But Patriots coach Bill Belichick, defensive co-ordinator when the Giants won Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990, has been in no mood this week to compare the sides.

"I think there's always a time to reflect back on the season; this isn't it," he said.

"Right now the time is to focus on the Giants and prepare for this game, so that's what we're doing.

"Later on after the season or whenever, some other point in history, looking back is fine, but we're not anywhere close to that right now."

Belichick has at his disposal on of the best offenses ever, Brady having set a record this year with 50 touchdown passes and Randy Moss having caught a record 23 of them.

But the Giants will take heart from their performance in the last game of the regular season, where they took a 12-point lead by harassing Brady and scored 35 points against a patchy Patriots defence.

The Giants eventually lost 38-35 but former NFL star Rod Woodson told BBC Sport: "The Giants had the game won, there were a couple of miscues and New England took advantage of that.

"I don't think they'll let those miscues happen again. I think their defence is good enough and they can score points against the Patriots."

"I really believe the Giants are going to squeak this one out. I think they're going to win this game."

Another long night ahead :cheer: I shall be backing the Giants only because I'm with the New York Jets on Madden 08 on the Wii  Plus it was the Giants that came over to Wembley to play a game against the Miami Dolphins :cheer: Eli Manning ftw!

 i don't know how well the BBC website was coping for I abandoned everyone to go and watch it on a big 21" screen  on BBC Two.

The NY Giants won with a touchdown in the last minute after a superb drive by Eli Manning  who also won the MVP award. That means the Patriots finish the season on an 18-1 record, failing to take the record of unbeaten through an entire season held by the Miami Dolphins from 1972 when they went 17-0.

One of the best SuperBowl's in history and one of the biggest upsets too :cheer:

Final score NY Giants 17 - 14 New England Patriots

New Orleans Saints are playing the San Diego Chargers in October at Wembley in the next season :cheer:
