She's absolutely amazing. I've been going through a bit of a Kate Bush phase again lately. I have her entire discography.

If I had to rate her albums, it'd probably be like this:

Hounds of Love > The Dreaming > The Kick Inside > Never For Ever > The Sensual World > Aerial > Lionheart >>>> The Red Shoes

All great though, especially Aerial and up. Lionheart's pretty good and The Red Shoes is a bit meh. But omg. The first six.

The Red Shoes does have some nice songs though...And So Is Love + Lily =

Her best song lyrically is probably Jig of Life.

'Jig of Life' is the one that stood out for me on first listen as well! I do quite like the album. 'The Morning Fog' is a fantastic closing song. I'm downloading 'The Kick Inside' now and if I like that one I'll download the others ones you like Ben. ^_^

Jonny..

Kick Inside is great - but a little screechy in parts.... The Dreaming is a killer of an album - dark, hypnotic and just....weird. Hounds of Love, the second suite of songs, Ninth Wave, is otherworldly....

Same with Aerial - first disc is just ok apart from Coral Room which is stunning.... it's the 2nd disc that's awesome. Noctune and Sunset are beautiful.

Lionheart's great in parts, but a little dated... Red Shoes, I agree with Medicated Soap - it has some of Kate's best work.... but also some of her worst. Same with Sensual World... title track, The Fog, Never Be Mine, Rocket's Tail and This Woman's Work, all astonishing.. the rest... just ok. Never For Ever is worth a listen but again, in parts, it;s dated.. Delius is still gorgeous, though.

Happy listening.... Ninth Wave is probably best listened to on headphones lying in bed in the dark.... it's just something else, then....

After a convo with Ben last night I downloaded the entire back catalogue. Going through it now <3
Well "Hounds Of Love" is an absolute must. One of the best albums ever. "Cloudbusting" is my personal favourite.

"The Sensual World" is also an amazing album. I've listened to some of her others and i liked them but they didnt match the genius of those two.

Spot on!

I also love 'Eat the Music' from the Red Shoes

Take a papaya

You like a guavva?

Grab a banana

And a sultana

Rip 'em to pieces

With sticky fingers

Split the banana

Crush the sultana

All emotion

And with devotion

You put your hands in

What ya thinking?

What am I singing?

A song of seeds

The food of love

Eat the music :cheer:

I'll talk a little about each album after I've listened. After downloading/listening to 'The Kick Inside' I have to say I think it's STUNNING. Better than 'Hounds of Love' I thought. The second part of the album would have to be my favourite, lots of beautiful songs (especially 'James and the Cold Gun' ). So I are going to listen to 'The Dreaming' next. Listened to 'The Dreaming' and 'Never For Ever' now as well. 'The Dreaming' is a very good album, and it probably contains my fave track so far (the beautiful 'Houdini' ). 'Never for Ever' is strange... different to the other three I think, her vocals seem a lot more high on this record than the others.

Its never too late to become a fan of Kate  I personally think it should be law that everyone owns her back catalogue.

I've not listened to the albums in a long while. I might just have to dig them out with all this talk <3

Well this thread has made me want to listen to The Kick Inside again. It's nearly 30 years since I first heard this and it's still as beautiful as the first time I heard it.

God the songs The Kick Inside and Room for the Life are achingly beautiful. And Feel It was such a sexy song for the 10 year old me.

'The Sensual World' is a beautiful album. By far my favourite from the five I have listened to so far. Every track seems to work so well on the album, everyone so gorgeous in its own different way. Amazing album. 'Never Be Mine' + 'This Womans Work'!

I can't listen to This Woman's Work without blubbing like a little kid!

Definitely one of my Top 5 Kate songs.

I can't listen to This Woman's Work without blubbing like a little kid!

Definitely one of my Top 5 Kate songs.

I'm the same... it's a perfect song for anyone who's lost someone.... all the regret of not saying what you should have said.... before it's too late - brilliant lyrics. One of my favourite ever records. Perfect.

I love how her lyrics are pretty racy, too - Kashka from Baghdad is daring considering the year, and Infant Kiss is shocking to say the least - I remember this causing a bit of fuss when it first came out.

A Kate rarity that I think is one of her finest is 'Ne T'enfuis Pas' from 1983, which was a single in France and Canada but never here..... have a listen - I think it's one of her sexiest records...

Here's the lyrics in English...

I am coming

Like a cat

Through the night so black.

You are waiting,

And I fall

Into your white wings, la-la-la...

And I fly,

And I sink

Like a feather.

If the great eyes of my God

Were not watching (over) me,

I would steal you away.

Don't fly away!

You have wings,

The power to leave me.

You fell

From the sky like an angel, la-la-la

And I'm afraid

That the sky

Will take you back.

If the great eyes of my God

Weren't watching (over) me,

I would steal you away.

I am coming

Like a cat

Through the night so black.

I beg you,

I beg you,

I beg you,

I beg you,

I beg you,

I beg you--

Don't fly

Away!

Jonny... have you heard Under the Ivy yet? This was the b-side to Running Up That Hill. Another absolute gem....

Kashka From Baghdad was extremely daring for its time. ;o Lovely song.
I haven't checked out any of the B-sides/rare's yet... I will do after I've listened to all the albums.

Ne T'En Fui Pas came out on one of the extra discs in the This Woman's Work Box of which I am a proud owner.

It's also got the french version of Infant's Kiss - Un Baiser D'enfant.

She also recorded this in gaelic in 1997

Kate Bush - Mna Na H'Eireann

Thanks for all your help over the months.

I love her even more than I originally did when I first made the post.

My favourite album so far is 'Hounds of Love'.

Kate Bush - Mna Na H'Eireann

I remember hearing this years ago.... it's really beautiful.

The only close-to-duff one she's released is Red Shoes - but even that had moments of genius like And So Is Love, Moments of Pleasure and the gorgeous Song of Solomon.

Personal favourites are The Sensual World (hmmmmmh yes) and Hounds of Love... very closely followed by the dark, mesmerising The Dreaming which is her most 'out there' album.

It's worth investing in all of them, really - but probably best to wait as EMI look set to (finally) release the remastered albums this year. Otherwise, the Japanese imports from last year, UK album priced, are beautiful - identical copies of the vinyl albums, gatefold sleeves and inner sleeves, too - gorgeous they are, especially the Never For Ever one.

I can't believe I have not commentated in this thread. :o

I think this is pretty much it.

If I had to rate the albums in order (rate out of 10)

1st The Hounds Of Love (1985 10)

2nd The Dreaming (1982 10)

3rd Aerial (2005 9) - A wonderful return from nowhere The first CD is OK, apart from the deeply moving The Coral Room, But the 2nd CD a 42 mins conceptual suite is like THOL's The Ninth Wave perfected. Sensational.

4th The Kick Inside (1978 9)

5th The Sensual World (1989 8)

6th Never For Ever (1980 7)

7th Lionheart (1978 6)

8th The Red Shoes (1993 5) - By now Tori Amos, Bjork & PJ Harvey were making better "Kate Bush" albums.

Anyway, I think Alison Goldfrapp has seen this rare performance video (think of the video to A&E)

Kate Bush - Delius (Sound Of The Summer) (1980)

I'm not going to rank the albums because I've only listened to each one once but I can easily say that 'The Sensual World' is my favourite of the lot. I also adore 'The Red Shoes' (I really cannot see the hate, it seems to me to be her most clear (in a good way) album) loads. The only one I didn't really feel on first listen was 'Aerial' but still it was good.
