Swedish dance act Basshunter continues the increasing trend of long running chart toppers this week as Now You’re Gone tops the chart for a fifth week seeing off close competition from Canadian rockers Nickelback.

The Swedish producer’s single, originally a hit in Scandanavia as Boten Anna, has become the biggest dance track since Call On Me by Eric Prydz which topped the chart for five weeks back in 2004 albeit non-consecutively. To find the last dance track that topped the UK chart for five weeks in a row we have to go 15 years back to early 1993 and No Limit by 2 Unlimited unless you consider It’s Like That by Run DMC vs. Jason Nevins to be a dance track as that topped the chart for six weeks in 1998. Basshunter is the tenth act to have scored at least five weeks at the top of the UK chart this decade. The others were Black Eyed Peas, Eric Prydz, Tony Christie, James Blunt, Gnarls Barkley, Shakira, Mika, Rihanna and Leona Lewis.

Nickelback’s tongue in cheek ode to fame Rockstar has been on the UK top 75 now for seventeen weeks moving 64-58-45-34-20-21-19-22-25-25-15-8-4-6-3-3-2 yet again marking a new peak for the track this week. If it continues to climb then next week it could well be No.1 and would smash the record of the longest time taken to reach No.1 currently jointly held by Jennifer Rush and Celine Dion who both took sixteen weeks to reach the top spot with The Power Of Love and Think Twice respectively. Rounding off the top three is Adele who slides to No.3 after four weeks on the chart with Chasing Pavements, the last three being at No.2 where it entered.

Rihanna’s record company finally got round to releasing the physical versions of Don’t Stop The Music this week and as a result the song climbs back to its peak of No.4 up from No.5 last week. The 4th single from her No.1 album Good Girl Gone Bad, this is the fifth week in the top ten for the song. Upcoming British males star David Jordan rounds off the top five this week jumping to No.5 after the physical release of his infectious, if rather quirky second single Sun Goes Down. His first single, Place In My Heart, failed to chart when released late last year. Kelly Rowland’s Work is down two places to No.6 this week on its third week in the top ten while Hot Chip are down a place with Ready For The Floor, which spends its second week in the top ten. Also filing down a place each after five weeks each in the top ten are Britney Spears’ Piece Of Me at No.8 and Lupe Fiasco’s Superstar at No.9.

Rounding off the top ten is a rather unexpected new entry for Scottish band Wet Wet Wet. The act had huge hits in the 1980s and 1990s the biggest being their 1994 No.1 single Love Is All Around which topped the chart for 15 weeks. Their last top ten single was their cover of Yesterday by The Beatles which peaked at No.4 back in 1997 but their fanbase seems to have come out in force to buy new single Weightless. It remains a mystery as to why it has performed so much better than their last single Too Many People which reached No.46 just three months ago. Therefore this week in the top ten there are four Brits, a Barbadian, a Canadian, a Swede and three Americans.

There is lots of action just outside the top ten this week. Mark Brown & Sarah Cracknell’s The Journey Continues climbs from No.24 to No.11 on its second week on the chart. The dance track that samples the Lloyds TSB advert was tipped by some to be a contender for No.1 earlier in the year but lands just outside the top ten after its physical release. It could of course still go top ten but for now Tell Me Why (The Riddle), Paul Van Dyk’s No.7 hit from 2000 remains Sarah’s biggest as she featured on it with the rest of her band Saint Etienne.

The Feeling’s I Thought It Was Over debuted at No.93 on downloads last week having only been available for a couple of days but after a full week of downloads it soars to No.12 ahead of its physical release on Monday. The British pop-indie band scored three top ten hits from their debut album in 2006, the most successful being their debut single Sewn which peaked at No.7. This track however looks almost certain to become their biggest hit next week and bodes well for the release of their second album Join With Us. Morrissey has the next new entry with That’s How People Grow Up debuting at No.14. The former Smiths singer has had a resurgence in popularity in the last few years and this is his 10th top twenty hit since 2004. It is taken from his Greatest Hits album which is released tomorrow though many fans are disappointed that it seems to ignore most of the material from his solo career favouring his more recent singles.

Goldfrapp are new at No.18 this week with A & E, the first single from their upcoming new album Seventh Tree. The British duo led by the charismatic front woman Alison Goldfrapp released their first single Utopia in 2001 to limited fanfare but have grown in popularity ever since. Best known for their flamboyant electro pop they scored their biggest hit in 2005 with Ooh La La which peaked at No.4. This much more laidback single looks as if it could provide them with a third UK top ten hit when physically released on Monday. Kylie Minogue has been moving slowly around the chart for the past eight weeks moving 32-28-43-29-27-26-22 and now jumping to No.20 on its eighth week in the UK top 75. The second single from the Australian legend’s tenth album X, it is yet to receive its physical release and should move into the top ten at the very least when this release coincides with a scheduled performance of the track at the Brit Awards.

Biffy Clyro score the next new entry to the top 40 at No.27 this week with Who’s Got A Match. It is the fifth single to be lifted from their UK No.2 album Puzzle, and impressively all five singles have reached the top 30. Michael Jackson is to release the 25th anniversary edition of his epic 1983 album Thriller on Monday and to celebrate this fact the pop legend has re-recorded a few of the album’s hits with some of today’s biggest stars. While most of the rest of the world are treated to Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ with Akon, the UK gets a remake of The Girl Is Mine which now features rapper Will.I.Am as opposed to Paul McCartney. The single originally reached No.8 in the UK and this week the remake climbs to No.32 after its physical release. Michael Jackson scored nineteen top 40 hits in 2006 with a re-issue series but his last original hit single in the UK was the 2003 No.5 hit One More Chance.

US producer Timbaland has been no stranger to the UK chart in the past year. Alongside his many successful collaborations, his singles Give It To Me, The Way I Are and Apologize all went top 3 in the UK and all spent ten or more weeks inside the top ten selling well over 200,000 copies each the last two passing 300,000. Scream is the fourth single to be taken from his No.2 album Shock Value and features the vocals of Keri Hilson, who guested on The Way I Are, and Nicole Scherzinger, the lead singer of Pussycat Dolls. The song soars from No.153 to No.36 this week after increased airplay and video play and could well give Timbaland the 4th top ten hit from the album in the coming weeks. US alternative rock act 30 Seconds To Mars have the final new entry to the top 40 this week with From Yesterday which soars from No.90 last week to No.37. Their first top 40 hit was the second release of The Kill which peaked at No.28 late last year.

There is a new No.1 album this week courtesy of Jack Johnson. The American singer songwriter had huge million selling success with In Between Dreams and Sleep Through The Static follows that album to the top spot. Adele’s 19 slides to No.2 on its second week on the chart while Nickelback’s 2005 album All The Right Reasons continues to benefit from the success of Rockstar and stays at No.3 this week. Dance act Hot Chip score their biggest ever album as Made In The Dark debuts at No.4 ahead of Scouting For Girls self titled former No.1 album which slides to No.5 this week. Mary J Blige has a hit album on her hands with Growing Pains which is new at No.6 while Raising Sand is down to No.7 for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Rihanna slides a place to No.8 with the former No.1 album Good Girl Gone Bad while This Is The Life is down to No.9 for Amy MacDonald. Billy Fury rounds off the top ten with His Wondrous Story up five places to No.10 this week.

Next week could see a sixth week at the top for the mighty Basshunter but Nickelback will be looking to continue their upwards progress and take the top spot from the Swede. The Feeling and Goldfrapp release the two biggest new physical singles next week and both should glide into the top ten though neither seem to have enough momentum to give either their first No.1 single. There are also download releases due from Welsh singer Duffy and garage act H ‘Two’ O, both of which could be in the top ten this time next week. Other songs released physically tomorrow that should make the top 40 are due from US rock acts Paramore and Simple Plan.

oh dear, another mistake  thanks for correcting that I'll change it :) you got there before Paul this week!

Paul Van Dyk’s No.7 hit from 2000 remains Sarah’s biggest as she featured on it with the rest of her band Saint Etienne.

Apparently Sarah Cracknell was the only Saint Etienne member to feature on this track (even though the whole band were credited).

I know there's some confusion about this fact  I have the CD single and all of the band members from Saint Etienne are pictured on the front cover and inside the sleeve it says 'Saint Etienne appear courtesy of Mantra records'

and also Black Box-Ride On Time though both of these were before No Limit. If Basshunter somehow makes it 6 weeks at the top he will equal these two records as the longest running dance No.1 of all time
