not really britney spears GH:MP sold 8 million but we all know that most of her studio albums sold more then 10 million worldwide.
I'd have thought they would as they usually have a wide span of songs from the act from different eras, and also their 'casual' fans are more likely to buy a greatest hits than a studio album.

Yeah, i agree. I mean die hard finds will buy it especially if they have some new material and then casual fans will buy a "Best of" also. <_<
Generally I wouldn't have thought so, but there are some exceptions. ;)
the only reason i dont think so is because, many artists are more apt to promote a studio album as they know they will have to promote to get good sales, while when releasing a greatest hits MOST artists look at it as easy money and know that it will atleast get them ok sales just because they know all of their hit singles are on that cd.

Best Of's sell more to the casual fan... I own a lot of greatest hits albums and that is the only album I own by that act...

But they sell worse with fans. I don't see the point in buying a Greatest Hits from an act you already have all or most of their albums.

well i suppose if its part of a natural ongoing run of albums or whether the record is just a way for the record company to regroup an amount of costs theyve lost when an album campaign has gone belly up (so no it's not easy money).

for example is no wonder that a daft punk collection came out after this seeing as it was slagged of my most of the press

"Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it, drag and drop it, zip- unzip it"

What a subjective question. It totally depends on the band I suppose. Those who wait a decent amount of time before releasing a greatest hits (not three albums as is now the norm) will have a good, long career of singles to select from. A good example of this is the Beautiful South whose albums sold well enough to hit the top 10, but had a MASSIVE seller in their greatest hits as people in unison said "Hmm, you know they have a few good singles. Never liked them enough to buy an album, but I like the look of this."

Greatest Hits albums are usually used by record companies to claw back more cash from their bands - usually around christmas time too. Other times they'll be used as contract-shorteners / breakers. They love em - sell people something they already have a lot of...and the promotion looks after itself - everyone knows the tracks cos they've all been singles.

Britney´s Greatest Hits sold nowhere near 8 million...

Back to topic, usually Greatest Hits album sell more because they keep selling forever on catalog. However it doesn´t happen with teenage pop since their songs are usually outfashioned a few months after the release.

however loads get lost in the xmas rush though, which is good for people who like to pick them up for £3 the following summer   but not so much for fans who wanna say well this album was top ten

It's about the same, but i believe studios sell a little more

Well bands do usually put a few new songs on in order for the fans to buy it as well as casual fans <_<

Actually YEAH it did. It has sold 8.3 million worldwide which was confirmed by billboard so thanx for your unwanted and false input :)

Possibly because it may include early singles that pretty much flopped before an act became successful.
