Posted February 26, 200817 yr I'm sick of all this Indie/Britpop bull$h!t that is coming out at the moment, all these bands sound the same! I don't give a $h!t if its popular, its bullf***! These bands never have anything worthwhile to sing about, which would be okay if they didn't sound so mediocre. What I don't get about these bands though, is how they always seem to get so popular, even amongst groups who claim to only like heavy music. Now, don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people expanding their musical horizons, but these people still claim not to have done. Indie seems to be accepted universally as the best musical style. All I want to know is: "Why?!"
February 26, 200817 yr I do sort of agree. SO many of the popular Indie bands sound the exact same. Or what's worse is when an Indie anthem actually breaks out - The Kooks, Naive - and then all of that group's follow-ups are bloody awful. Reverand And The Makers are okay though. :kink:

February 26, 200817 yr Why should I have to justify the music I like to the likes of you. I tend to prefer guitar bands playing pop songs which is what indie basically amounts to nowadays to other kinds of music. If you don't like it don't listen to it. 99% of dance music sounds the same to me but I don't go into the dance forum and start a thread saying I Hate Dance Music. Just total arrogance. February 26, 200817 yr I must admit, I thought the same. But over a while, I've realised the difference between Indie and Pop, Indie being Arctic Monkeys, (which I really like now  ) and Pop, like The Feeling (who I really cannot stand!)
February 26, 200817 yr Neither of those bands are Indie bands though, they're pop bands  Well I guess it's a pretty thin line, but I would call a song like Heavyweight Champion Of The World somewhat indie.
February 26, 200817 yr Some people at the moment seem to be calling The Hoosiers and Scouting For Girls 'Indie', that I'll never understand why
February 26, 200817 yr Surely as 'indie' becomes more popular ... it becomes 'pop' music - its inevitable! Norma
February 26, 200817 yr Joker person, what sort of bands are you talking about? You aren't exactly naming any examples. What music/artists do you like? You're a very confusing fellow :(
February 26, 200817 yr Surely as 'indie' becomes more popular ... it becomes 'pop' music - its inevitable! Norma Well yes any popular music is 'pop' but Indie bands are on Indie labels and they sound indie rather than the watered down versions to appeal to people who 'used to' like dance and R&B <_< Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes are Indie but of course they're pop bands too as is someone like Timberland. It annoys me almost as much as people calling Rihanna R&B because she's black

What they call R&B today sounds nothing like stuff that I would have called R&B 20 years ago! I suppose its just one of those 'circle of life' things! Norma
February 27, 200817 yr I think I heard modern R n B stands for rhythm n bass which is ironic considering the chief tunes of the genre these days have no discernible bassline and very little rhythm to speak of. As for 'indie' - do we need to have this argument again? I've been arguing about this since 1990 when Erasure used to appear on the chart show indie chart due to being signed to Mute. As far as the indie / pop transition goes, you've pretty much got Kaiser Chiefs on the border keeping everyone apart.

Any genre of music sounds the same like Pop, dance, hip hop etc. Indie bands such as Oasis, Blur, Manic Street preachers etc can make good music, thats why they are accepted universally! You won't see someone like cascada accepted coz they make rubbish music.
February 27, 200817 yr I do see your point, and agree in some ways. Scouting For Girls, The Kooks, The Hoosiers and Razorlight - these four bands highlight exactly what is wrong with the current music scene.
February 27, 200817 yr I do see your point, and agree in some ways. Scouting For Girls, The Kooks, The Hoosiers and Razorlight - these four bands highlight exactly what is wrong with the current music scene. Yes but none of them are CLOSE to being Indie bands though!
February 27, 200817 yr Yes but none of them are CLOSE to being Indie bands though! I know. What I mean is what the general public seem to class as indie and buy in droves because they want to be 'cool'. Really annoys me.
February 27, 200817 yr But how can people think Hoosiers and Scouting For Girls are "Indie"? That is literally driving me insane right now!

I don't know what you'd class them bands but I wouldn't class them as pop, same goes for The Feeling and Plain White T's - mainstream???
