A year described by well-renowed music journalist Garry Mulholland as 'the arsehole year of pop music'. It was the year I got into music (at just 8! Now everyone say 'awwwwwwwwwwww!'). Looking back 16 years on, it is with nothing but fond memories! This is the list!

En Vogue - Free Your Mind

The greatest female bashing protest anthem of all time!

Degrees of Motion - Do You Want It Right Now

A slice of funky vocal house perfection, far from groundbreaking, just a bloody decent track!

Was Not Was - Shake Your Head

Kim Basinger? Ozzy Osbourne? Singing? On the same track? WHAT??

Jimmy Nail - Ain't No Doubt

I make it manadatory for everyone to include a guilty pleasure on their list! This is mine... "she's lying!"

Clivilles & Cole - A Deeper Love

A seminal club classic. The greatest thing this prolific duo ever did! Gospel house is amazing!

Shanice - I Love Your Smile

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Madonna - Deeper and Deeper

One of the best tracks from the dark and seedy sex/perv era! Classic gay handbaggy bliss!

En Vogue - My Lovin

A 2nd entry from - I would say - the greatest all girl group that have ever lived!

Shakespears Sister - Stay

The first single I ever bought - number one for absolutely bloody ages! A complete one-off and like nothing else!

Flowered Up - Weekender

The perfect way to draw this personal snap-shot of this very mixed year! The greatest 'indie-dance' anthem of all time. All 12 minutes are essential listening, spine tingling, wonderful.

i have to agree with gary mulholland..... tbh i dunno wether i can find enough tracks from 92 to compile an album! lol

interesting list though scotty, and of course confirms the notion that you like best the first time you got into music, wether it was any good or not.

Ha ha! 1992 is held dear to me too even though it gets a hard time from most...and with most of your choices I can understand, although I do still like 'A Deeper Love'.

I was just surprised and very happy to see Weekender in there - a true classic.

well ive managed to scrape some tracks together after all :)

james - 'born of frustration' superb production on this largely overlooked track...

utah saints - 'something good' currently being re issued, smashing track cleverly marrying kate bush with uptempo dance beats...

shamen - 'boss drum] fantastic lyrics for the spritually inclined, the track that finally won me over to 'dance'.

kim syms - 'too blind to see' odd but catchy hook on this otherwise ordinary track

klf - 'america what time is love' excellant klf as ever, their best? rock meets dance, great stuff!

sl2 - 'on a ragga tip' lol... perhaps the one that started the 'ragga' explosion, dunno, but not a bad track and VERY danceable .

shakespears sister - 'goodbye cruel world' why everyone prefers 'stay' is a mystery to me, this was far far superior

inspiral carpets - 'bitches brew' what a fantastic track, why it was never huge is another mystery to me!

here's my 1992 album..

1 Flowered Up - Weekender - a classic - nuff said.

2. Stereo MCs - Connected - slacker stoner grooves.... irresistable.

3. Inner City - Hallelujah - yet another Inner City classic - with some orgasmic remixes.

4. Future Sound of London - Papua New Guinea - blissed-out chillout - stunning.

5. David Sylvian / Ryuichi Sakamoto - Heartbeat - a beautiful return to form from the ex-Japan man.

6. Madonna- This Used To Be My Playground - one of her finest singles.

7. Degrees of Motion - Do You Want It Right Now - another all-time classic.

8. L7 - Pretend We're Dead - muff-flashing bunch of absolute horrors - who made a few great singles.

9. Suede - The Drowners - the only guitar band worth listening to in the 90s IMO - Oasis? Mehhhhhhh

10. Suede - Metal Mickey - another classic slice of indie-pop from a band at the height of their powers. AWESOME.

11. Morrissey - You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side - not a single, but the STORMING opening track from his opus, Your Arsenal sees Morrissey in fighting, snarling and tip-top form - definitely one of THE tracks of 1992.

12. The Cure - Friday, I'm In Love - possibly their most commercial moment ever, this is The Cure going headlong into top ten territory. And it's brilliant.

13. Shakespears Sister - Stay - A sneaky extra track - IMO the best number one of the whole of the 1990s - from the stunning video to the incredible Marcella Detroit vocal.... this is pop at its very finest.

klf - 'america what time is love' excellant klf as ever, their best?

Nope, not their best that would have to be the original version - but it did boast their best video for sure.

Commiserations on getting into music in such a thin year. I've just about managed to scrape together this album!

01 - The Boo Radleys - Lazarus I much prefer the shoegazing Boos to their later pop incarnation.

02 - Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness Wave your lighters in the air! What's not to like?

03 - Leftfield - Release The Pressure An early classic from this enduring group.

04 - The Heart Throbs - Hooligan Underrated indie-pop group.

05 - L7 - Pretend We're Dead Classic pop grunge from this US all female rock group.

06 - Orbital - Halcyon On + On + On Early Orbital track that points the way towards trance.

07 - Sonic Youth - 100% Never my favourite group but I like this one.

08 - The Darling Buds - Sure Thing Their last and, in my opinion, best single. Almost shoegazing.

09 - REM - Man On The Moon This was the year of Automatic For The People - one of their finest albums.

10 - TLC - Ain't Too Proud To Beg Their debut hit.

11 - The Prodigy - Out Of Space This was the year of Rave. Here's the Prodigy sampling an old Max Romeo tune.

12 - Stereolab - Laisser-Faire Back in their drone-rock days, when they were good!

Oh my god. :o :o

Oh you'd have done well on my guessing game. :P

James - Born of Flustration is a pretty good track actually. I hated everything James did, but this one was very much part of that early 90s indie/dance ilk (sorry to use such a generic term) which I quite liked.

Kym Sims - Too Blind To See It is always a proper party track! Very minimal in a way, but so addictive!

FSOL - Papa New Guinea is a beautiful track, very sorry I did clean forget about that one!

I don't think 1992 was that bad! Same as any other year- the more you dig the better the music you find. Here are the tracks that made my year.Probably missed a few out but these came to mind first.

Suede - The Drowners Came from nowhere (after a little hype from Melody Maker!) and owned 1992. Awesome and kick started the popularisation of indie in the mid 90s leading to Britpop.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Face to Face A little slinkiness from the Batman Returns soundtrack.

L7 - Pretend We're Dead Who can forget their muff flashing appearance on The Word.

Verve - Gravity Grave Mad Richard's finest hour back before they needed to add a "the" before their name.

Therapy? - Teethgrinder The drum sound is awesome on this and it has one of the most nagging guitar riffs ever.

The Cure - Friday I'm In Love Feel good hit of the year.

The Family Cat - Steamroller One half of early XFM broadcasts highlights in London...

Adorable - Sunshine Smile...and here's the other.

Jesus and Mary Chain - Reverence Why have they been forgotten? Long after the feedback subsided they remained an awesome band.

Primal Scream - Movin' On Up How many ways do I love this tune... I lose count.

Senseless Things - Homophobic A**hole Admirable anti-bigot rant set to the finest British grunge around.

Flowered Up - Weekender What else could I possibly choose... magnificent

don't know how I forgot to add this one... it's one of my singles of 92! And one of the Banshees' best ever moments.

The Cure track is, of course, fab, and these other indie ones are OK too!
