Posted March 7, 200817 yr You know the drill. I add in ten retro indie tracks... give as much info about the track without automatically giving it away and you the viewer, try to answer it as best as you can. :P And: COMMENCE! 01. The first single from this artist ever to miss the top 10 back in the Fall of 1989. The most memorable bit about this tune is the fun as hell spelling of the artist's first name. :P Morrissey - Ouija Board Ouija Board Congrats, 45cat. You win a copy of Velvet Underground's classic "White Light/White Heat" album (I have about 5 copies of this at my house.) 02. Manchester band that had a big crossover hit in America with this lovely little britpop ditty that was only controversial due to one suggestive lyric in question. It's mostly remembered now for being featured in the 1999 comedy American Pie. James - Laid Congrats tigerboy. You win a copy of the "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" DVD! :D 03. Lead single from one of this band's best albums ever. The song was a tribute to a great friend & roadie of a lot of punk bands who was sadly murdered in a robbery at his house. This song was a top 30 UK hit back in 1992. Sonic Youth - 100% Well done again, 45cat! You win a new i-Phone imported from America! :cheer: 04. Top 20 Britpop hit in 1994 that also became a big alternative American smash as well. Excellent punky Britpop choon - the video consisted of a hooker getting picked by her pimp at a butcher shop. I bet it's coming back to you now, ain't it? :D Suede - Metal Mickey Congrats richie, you win a copy of Brett Anderson's self-titled LP that he released last year. Excellent album and he needs the sales. :D 05. Another top 30 hit that had perhaps the most whimsical yet oddly brilliant lyrics deriving from Plutarch's The Obsolescence of Oracles. Waterboys - The Return Of Pan I'll split it among richie & grebo for the credit! :D 06. Despite it's very low charting in the UK, this track is revered to be this band's most commercial offering and by the mainstream to be their signature song. The basis of this song was describing how one is powerless against a mammoth earthquake. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man Correct - richie! You win the grand prize of 10,000 pounds! :D 07. The most successful alternative hit in America of 1995 from this group of Australian lads who were initially deemed to be Nirvana copycats. Despite the fact that they only released two albums in the UK, they're still currently the most popular band in their homeland. Silverchair - Tommorow. Astounding, grebo69! Considering that it didn't even chart in the UK yet it was such a mammoth hit in both America & Australia! You win: a copy of Patti Smith's classic "Horses" record! B) B) 08. Top 20 1988 hit that featured quite an interesting arrangement by using an accordion and percussion. It also became this band's breakthrough hit in America following a bit of controversy for sounding a bit too similar to the lyrics to the 1938 jazz classic Jeepers Creepers. Siouxsie & The Banshees - Peek-A-Boo Congrats, ScottyEm! You win a cookie! :cheer: :cheer: 09. A top 20 hit in 1997 that was hugely inspired from this band's obsession with David Bowie - the single version for this was much more fast-paced than the album version and had a very wicked action video as well. Blur - M.O.R. Congrats grebo69, you win a copy of his latest record with The Good, The Bad, & The Queen. Again, he needs the sales! :D 10. Formed by ex-members of the group at question #4 and off their #1 debut album back in 1995, this track still remains their signature tune in both America and the UK. To make this even more simpler, three words: Trigger Happy TV.  Congrats richie! It is indeed Elastica's "Connection" which I was sure somebody would have instantly gotten on the first run! Congrats - you win tickets to see the new "The Bank Job" movie starring the awful Jason Statham. :D Edited March 11, 200817 yr by R.E.M.Pragmatist
March 7, 200817 yr Number 8 is Souxie and The Banshee's 'Peek A Boo'... thats just form having a very very quick skim through. I'm not too clued up on Indie though.
March 7, 200817 yr Author Number 8 is Souxie and The Banshee's 'Peek A Boo'... thats just form having a very very quick skim through. I'm not too clued up on Indie though. Correct, Scott! B) B) I figured most would get #10 quickly though - it's still used as background music everywhere.
March 7, 200817 yr Is #1 Ouija Board Ouija Board by Morrissey? I remember it got panned in the music press.
March 7, 200817 yr Author Is #1 Ouija Board Ouija Board by Morrissey? I remember it got panned in the music press. Correct, 45cat. :D And also, I think you're much closer to the third question than you think. :) Edited March 7, 200817 yr by R.E.M.Pragmatist
March 7, 200817 yr Correct, 45cat. :D And also, I think you're much closer to the third question than you think. :) I'm assuming that must be 100% by Sonic Youth. I hadn't realised that had done so well in the charts until I just looked it up!
March 8, 200817 yr Author Correct & affirmitive for you both! :cheer: :cheer: I'm STILL surprised nobody's gotten nine and ten yet. But here are some more hints for both (as well as #2): 2 - The video consists of white captions at the bottom which are the lyrics to the song. This group has had two top tens, yet surprisingly enough this only made top 25. To elaborate more on the American Pie theme, it's been used as the movie music for all of it's three installments. 9 - The chorus completely sampled the melody of David Bowie's Boys Keep Swinging. 10 - The UK version of the video was an animated version while the US version consisted of an assortment of naked men. Charted at #17 in 1994.
March 8, 200817 yr 2 - The video consists of white captions at the bottom which are the lyrics to the song. This group has had two top tens, yet surprisingly enough this only made top 25. To elaborate more on the American Pie theme, it's been used as the movie music for all of it's three installments. you havent got this one?? this is probs the easiest one - its this: EkqIHWAMSJ4 for the new james single follow this link to here in specialist for some cool [60s sounding] adult rock from the band http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=65044
March 9, 200817 yr I got it because I was living in Japan at the time, they slavishly follow US music there and I actually own a copy of the album!
March 10, 200817 yr Yes, 2 is definitely 'Laid' by James - a song which came out after the album was released hence it's relatively bad showing first time round. Althogh it's hugely overrated I reckon. I don't think I'm right but is 6 'Life Becoming a Landslide' by Manic Street Preachers? Is 9 'Nancy Boy' by Placebo? 10 is 'Connection' by Elastica...and only 1 member was in 4...which is 4. 'Metal Mickey' by Suede.
March 10, 200817 yr Author I'm quite chuffed with the results this round! tigerboy is correct - #2 is the James single Laid which so doesn't compare to their other work, yet it's their only hit single in America and the only one most frat boys today probably memorize by heart. richie was completely amazing in his guesses: 2 correct out of 4 there: #'s 4 & 10 were both correct especially! And grebo69 got #9 correct: it's always been one of my favorite Blur singles that sadly get overlooked for more of their bigger classics. So now there's only #'s 5 & 6 left, let me provide more meticulous compendiums on both: 5 - It has perhaps one of the best opening lines to any song ever - I stood upon the balcony with my brand new bride, The clink of bells came drifting down the mountainside. This was the second single from their 1993 #5 album. 6 - This song is revered more as an American classic than a British classic - as many of their diehard fans wouldn't even rank this in their top 10. Originally recorded 2 years as a demobefore featuring on their groundbreaking 1989 album. The band got quite a mix of praise and lashing from critics from this tune being considered "pop material". The opening of this tune sounds quite similar to the opening used on the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night. The insipiration for this song was due to the many prolific experiences the lead singer had with earthquakes in California when he was a young lad. Guess That Indie Tune! Leaderboard: grebo69 - 2 45cat - 2 richie - 2 tigerboy - 1 ScottyEm - 1 Edited March 10, 200817 yr by R.E.M.Pragmatist
March 10, 200817 yr I'm thinking number 6 is by The Pixies and, certainly 'Here Comes Your Man' starts almost identically to 'A Hard Day's Night'.
March 10, 200817 yr ...and my curiosity got the better of me and I googled number 5 - I vaguely remember it being out but not so sure if it's indie as such. Still, I did like it. I'll keep schtum! :D
March 10, 200817 yr I googled it as well and it's from a great album. Wouldn't have remembered it from the lyrics for the life of me tho'
March 11, 200817 yr Author richie is definitely correct with #6 - definitely overrated among their core group of fans but it's still an amazing classic in my eyes. :) And considering both of you know what #5 is - I guess that's the end of this game! One of my favorite singles from the multi-genred Waterboys... their music is quite the brand of celtic and commercial rock but they always had quite an indie following in the States over here, hence why I put them in. :P
