2006. So many iconic songs: SOS, Smile, Hips Don't Lie, Maneater, SexyBack, Irreplaceable (or was this released 2007??)...

I've compiled playlists on iTunes for years with the singles that I've liked which have been released, based on numbers alone the decade seems to have got better as it has gone along, bar 2003, with a big jump in brilliance for 2007 -

2000 - 14

2001 - 12

2002 - 25

2003 - 12

2004 - 24

2005 - 22

2006 - 28

2007 - 35

2008 - 14 (so far!)

That obviously doesn't tell the full story of course, because albums released in various years have skewed it. Singles wise though, 2007 is the undisputed best year for me in terms of volume of stuff I have liked, and the quality of those songs.

Out of those, the truly brilliant singles years were 2002 (highlights - Will Young's first round of singles, Darren Hayes 'Insatiable', 'Strange Relationship', George Michael's 'Freeek!', JT's 'Like I Love You') 2004 (Maroon 5's Songs About Jane singles, Will Young's 'Your Game' and 'Friday's Child', Keane's Hopes and Fears singles, George Michael's 'Flawless' and 'Amazing') and 2007 (Maroon 5's It Won't Be Soon Before Long singles, Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Trip The Light... singles, Darren Hayes' This Delicate Thing... singles, Take That's 'Rule The World', Rob Thomas' 'Little Wonders', Keane's 'A Bad Dream' and 'The Night Sky')

Albums wise, there's no real winner as my favourite albums have all been spread out over the decade (Will Young Friday's Child 2003, Maroon 5 Songs About Jane and Keane Hopes and Fears 2004, Nate James Set The Tone and Will Young Keep On 2005, Keane Under The Iron Sea 2006, Maroon 5 It Won't Be Soon... and Darren Hayes This Delicate Thing... 2007).

I have put far too much thought into this :)

Well the 21st Century has gone downhill imo for music from 2004 onwards.

But what have been your favourite years for pop music and why?

Mine are

2000 & 2002, 2003

I loved the fantastic Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera etc from 2000.

2002 has stunning songs from Enrique Iglesias (Escape), Vanessa Carlton (A Thousand Miles), The Calling (Wherever You Will Go), Sugababes (Freak Like Me) etc

And 2003 was even better with the likes of Delta Goodrem  , Beyonce, S Club (7), S Club 8, Lisa Scott Lee, Holly Valance, Britney, Christina etc.

However since then music has been on a downward slide with little in the way of wow songs for years.

^ I think the reverse.

The decade started off poorly, but picked up from 2004 onwards as manufactured pop stars went on the slide in popularity whilst more talented singer, songwriters have taken over, although it seems to have hit a plateau at the moment.

So my vote is for 2006: Maneater, Hips Don't Lie, Chasing Cars, Patience, I Don't Feel Like Dancing, Rehab, Who Knew, Crazy, Something Kinda Oooh, Irreplaceable, America, Ain't No Other Man, All Time Love, SexyBack, Smile, Sorry, Fill My Little World, etc......

of this argument i side with Conor, prefer all the cheesy bubblegum-funk and really upbeat pop hits...the records charting in the last few years may be a more sophisitacate slice of pop music (Chasing Cars, Fill My Little World etc) but omg arent they boring!! (girls alouds/xenomania's brilliance excepted)

i found Now 69 was hard to get thru as most of the track just bore me - was much better when they had now with all emi-universale and sony bmg's hits album as 100% hits rate of now 69 - means that songs have been overplayed and not mmany smaller hits apart from amy winehouse.

2002 - Dirrty, Sound Of The Underground & Christina's entire album made that year for me

2004 - Eamon & Frankee LMAO

2005 - RIHANNA

2006 - Pretty much sucked apart from Nelly Furtado :(, but she made the year

2007 - Umbrella, About You Now, Bleeding Love, Say it Right, Timbo's Album & GGGB :P

Anastacia is the only decent artist to come out of the naughties. -_-
2007 gave us some great music and I discovered more artists in that year than any before, so 07 for me.
