Posted March 20, 200817 yr As I've excluded anything that could be constituted as a disco record (hence no Donna Summer - I Feel Love; Chic - Good Times; Bee Gees - Staying Alive; etc) or prior to that on old style R'n'B dance/funk classic (hence no Sly & The Family Stone - Dance To The Music; James Brown - Cold Sweat; Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove; etc) I've focussed on the last two decades of the century. No doubt some of you will say that should not count that's an Indie Record; that should not count that's a RNB record, that should not count because it is not a proper dance record etc..... Well tough cookies....... In vaguely chronological order: 1. SOS Band - Just Be Good To Me http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6cajy5WSDd0 A hit in 1983 produced by former Prince cohorts Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis who replaced Rodgers & Edwards as the #1 dance producers working with the likes of Janet Jackson; Alexander O'Neal; Cherrelle; Crystal Waters; Jordan Knight; etc. This of course was covered by Beats International & turned into a UK#1 hit in 1990. The less said about Mariah Carey's version of this track the better.... 2. Shannon - Let The Music Play http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cpEGDXhu5oM Produced in 1983 by legendary dance producer DJ Arthur Baker, this song became a huge breakout hit around the same time as a certain song called Holiday by some unknown singer called Madonna (I'm sure you've never heard of her, either :P) 3. Hazell Dean - Searchin (Gotta Find Me A Man) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ04CwlWS0U All you need to be told is that this brilliant Hi-NRG track was PWL's first ever UK Top10 hit. A far cry to the ghastly records by Kylie; Jason Donovan; Rick Astley; Sonia; Big Fun; The Reynolds Girls that SAW were peddling out by the end of the decade. Also video director Spike Jonze admitted that this very cheap, badly choreographed video was the inspiration for Fatboy Slim's award winning Praise You video. 4. Raze - Break 4 Love http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Or4upzkOiIs This classic NY Puerto Rican Latin House track became a bit of an Ibiza classic in 1988. 5. Joe Smooth - Promised Land http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ML3w4HIMHpY Forget the spirited but rather poor cover of this track by Paul Weller's Style Council, forget Steve Hurley or Kevin Sanderson's productions this is the best Chicago (Deep) House record ever made IMHO. 6. 808 State - Pacific State http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUhyFfuHGUg I wonder how much the original 12" of this sublime ambient Techno House record that I purchased in 1989 would go for on Ebay? 7. A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6FmoY0A_lfk "Acieeedddd, A-A-A-Acieeeddd". You can't help but move like Bez (Happy Modays) whenever this seminal Madchester acid house track is played. This sounds fresher today than 95+% of all that Euro-Cheese or lame remixes of earlier classics that goes under the excuse of a banner called Dance music today. 8. Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy (Oakenfold Remix) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x0x6m7NGATc&...amp;t=t&f=b The most well known Bristol trip hop record. This pioneering track came from the seminal Blue Lines album featuring the sublime vocals of Shara Nelson. This is easily one of the ten greatest records of the decade. 9. KLF - The Last Train to Transcentral http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=knhAKnCAJQI In my opinion the greatest Dance Act EVER. This is my favourite track by Bill Drummond & Jimmy Cauty, hence it's inclusion. 10. Primal Scream - Don't Fight It Feel It http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HF4Woi6UjZo Taken from the first & best to date Mercury Awards Winning Album of The Year this track produced by Andrew Weatherall featuring Denise Johnston's vocals is a superb acid house dance record. 11. Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2bKL1ptf71M This electronic drum'n'bass dance track is my favourite track by Britain's most successful dance act. Liam Howlett is a genius who just needs to remember to not allow his wife & her sister and Juliette Lewis into the studio to record vocals on his band's tracks. 12. Basement Jaxx - Red Alert http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cEBHLjc4DQA&...feature=related Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe are surely Britain's most successful Dance duo of the last decade. As this 1999 track perfectly encapsulates "And the music keeps on playing on and on..." ... and long may Dance music thrive as well, not that it is helped by awful records by Cascada being labelled as Dance music. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sadly no room for Leftfield, Chemical Bros, Fatboy Slim, Sub Sub, The Grid, Deee-Lite, Beatmasters, M/A/R/R/S, Bomb The Bass, Mantronix, Utah Saints, De La Soul, Art Of Noise, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Usura, ......
March 20, 200817 yr I would quite hapilly take this CD with me when I go away to Alermia this year and listen to this on loop! Very class choice of era-defyning anthems (only Joe Smooth gets a semi thumbs down for me, never really been a fan of this...). But Shannon? 808 State? Raze? Basement Jaxx? My tongue is literally wagging!
March 20, 200817 yr This is mine! And considering dance music is, well, my undisputed passion... to pick ten is painful!... Anyway here goes... in chronological order... Shannon - Let The Music Play 1983 This track was - probably - released the same week I was born so it's quite fitting how the dawn of a new era began at the exact same time! Disco collides with stadium-sized euro electronic music for what is just absolutely timeless and the second time this appears in this topic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aU8JGZ1Jdaw Chaka Khan - I Feel For You 1984 Prince knew how to pen a track for a diva - even for one as euphoric as the mighty Chaka! Everything about this track is too addictive for words, the symth riddle, the chunky drum pattern a vocal that could make mountains dance like idiots! And a number one hit to boot! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cVtDW6_XRQ Frankie Knuckles - Your Love 1985 (released in 1989) In similar vain to Raze 'Break 2 Love'... down-tempo house music tailor-made to be, well basically, shagged to the core too! Except this had the overall edge and the breathy male vocal moaning 'I Can't Let Go...'. OOOOH!!! The ditty riff that loops on,known the world over when it later provided the backing to The Source/Candi Staton 'You Got The Love'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsDPyt6OBE4...feature=related Inner City - Big Fun 1988 Nothing more than a bloody great track! 20 years on, this still wees and poos all over about ooooooh 100% of all dance records produced in the past however many years! PAH! 'Good Life' and 'Pennies From Heaven' was also nearly as infectious! 808 State - Pacific State 1989 This still sounds like it was produced somewhere other than this planet, so god knows how this adapted back in 1989! Spine-tingling gorgeousness from a set of fine Mancs! HOORAH! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUhyFfuHGUg Asha - JJ Tribute 1990-ish (released in 1995) This was never a hit as such (it peaked at #38 in 1995, some years after when the sample had to be re-vocalled). How does Janis Joplin spliced over an Italian-Piano rave anthem take your fancy? Don't run for the hills just yet, this is a very highly regarded cult classic and my CD single of this would fetch a small fortune on eBay! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx9yHYxZRDE...feature=related Degrees Of Motion - Shine On 1992 (re-released in 1994) My single favorite track of all time! Nothing can possibly beat this volcanic blast of gospel house! It has everything! The piano, the preacher-style lyrics, the knock-out vocals, the pianos... oh god it just makes me go loopey whenever I hear it! Even the dated and tacky male rap in the middle only add's to it's charm. It even broke the the top ten in 1994, two years after it's initial release... No youtube clip available... BOOO!!! Barbara Tucker - Beautiful People 1994 A little self-indulgent here. Ms Tucker to me and you, or if you like, the first lady of house music. This is on par with 'Shine On' on quality, except this is a lesser known cut. 'Beautiful People' is US garage from New York and found itself in the charts in 1994 on the back of a real rubbish remix, but the clip enclosed is the original and best! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_0b37BCkYQ Sandy B - Make The World Go Round 1996 (since re-released about 5 times!) Deep Dish are relatively well known in pop music circles, having the odd flirtation with the charts. Back in 1996 however, they very quickly got themselves known as turning below-average house tracks into titanic-sized dance anthems! 10 minutes of deep dish magic and the biggest, bestest bassline ever conceived! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89dx-OltyAI Basement Jaxx - Red Alert 1999 This was the THE track to turn me into a die-hard Basement Jaxx fan from the get go! 1999 was immense for dance music, before quickly falling into oblivion the falling decade. The track needs to be witnessed live though for a priceless moment in time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEBHLjc4DQA Edited March 20, 200817 yr by ScottyEm
March 21, 200817 yr This is a tough one... but here goes... 1. Gwen Guthrie - Aint Nothing Going On But The Rent Awesome, awesome record - and a great starter to the night, I think.... what a bassline - fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx0VJLrs2z8...feature=related 2. Alcatraz - Give me Luv Gwen would segue perfectly with Alcatraz and the phenomenal Give me Luv - a record that, when I'd play it many moons ago, would crowd any floor - and get everyone's drinks vibrating off the speakers with another killer bassline. Here's the 12" version - some cracking breakdowns in there (especially at 3.29 seconds - corrrrr........) 3. Bedrock - For What You Dream Of Here's the full length version of this classic, probably best known these days for its appearance in Trainspotting - a great trancey builder of a tune - and it still sounds incredible. 4. Marmion - Schoneberg I first heard this at Trade in London's Turnmills club in the early 90s - which seems fitting as this legendary night closed for good last weekend - and they played this classic as the final ever record. Stonkingly great.... with one of the most amazing breakdowns ever - from 2mins til 2.35.... a record that never ever ceases to make me say "Wow".... 5. Li Kwan - Point Zero Released in the mid 90s as the b-side for Li Kwan's 'I Need a Man' single, the b-side went onto become the dancefloor filler - another trance classic.... like 'Little Fluffy Clouds' on very potent amphetamines :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQUB9Tj4aws...feature=related 6. Cygnus X - Orange Theme a Hooj track that has been re-re-re-released - and some - but the original, this version here - is still the absolute best - and it's still a guaranteed floor-filler. Talking of Hooj - 5 years after this legendary label closed down - 2008 sees it re-emerge - let's hope they carry on with releasing dance music of a brilliantly high standard, like they always did. 7. DJ Scot Project - U (I Got a Feeling) Another one of those songs that sounds just as awesome now as then - check that breakdown at about 4.40 and the HUGE finale - if I had a quid for every time I danced to this or played it I'd be a rich man... 8. Friends, Lovers and Family - Tribute Taking the pace right back down again with this orgasmic track - it's an epic journey of a track - in a Pink Floyd epic kinda way - ish :P A huuuge long, dramatic intro that only kicks into the track at 3.30sec - but the intro - God, that intro.... and the finale faster bit, too - ah - it's all good. Very good :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1Cx4Sd9AS8 9. Age of Love - Age of Love Probably the defining trance record - from the masters Jam and Spoon - here's their full unabridged version of this track - sit back and enjoy.... superb. I remember hearing this for the first on a rainy night walking through Bristol on my headphones - and having to stop walking so I could savour every brilliant minute of it. 10. Way Out West - Ajare Pioneering DJs Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren formed Way Out West in the early 90s and this classic was their debut single. Thumping, pumping techy house at its best - and this 12" mix is excellent. 11. Tony de Vit - The Dawn Probably best listened to from 1.13 mins in - this is a dance track that's emotional, for sure - not least of all because of de Vit's early untimely death shortly after this track was made. It's hard house and it's kind of dated - but it's a song that holds many club memories for anyone who was around at that time - plus, it was a Trade anthem, often the last record at 10am on a Sunday morning.... ah, they were the days... ;) 12. DJ Misjah and DJ Tim - Access The finale - and the track that seemed to drive every dancefloor ballistic from 93-96 - it's a powerhouse of a record - massive, pumping, throbbing hard house. This was my end-of-night track at virtually every gig I played in the 90s - and every time it went down a storm. I know Misjah, too - he's a mad Dutch DJ who's one of the sweetest guys you can meet - but he makes colossal, brutal, nasty hard music ;) Love it - and check the break and build-up from 2.44 to 4.15 - fabulous. I had to miss out Leftfield, Man With No Name, Underworld (the first album - sublime), Spooky and Billie Ray Martin (Persuasion - fantastic track), Yazoo, Divine, D.O.P., Vincent de Moor, Guy Called Gerald, and the one I'm saddest about leaving out.... Jamie Principle's rude classic 'Baby Wants To Ride'. However, there's always a sneaky hidden track...so... here's Junior Vasquez's 'Get Your Hands Off My Man' - campest video and song ever :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fla_eQArWIA And another corker (well, it is a dance album - it's an extended double vinyl :P ) ... Jens - Loops and Things - shocking video, great track - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFku70BPDok
March 21, 200817 yr wow.... some great tracks mentioned.... the sos band were great, love 'just be good to me', and ive already eulogized about 'age of love'. unfortunately ill not have the time to add mine until tomorrow night, gotta start thinking hard, must admit though that tip's collection is bloody good!
March 21, 200817 yr Best dance (post disco) album? It could be this one: 1. Underworld - Born Slippy .NUXX 2. Paul van Dyk - For An Angel 3. Orbital - Halcyon + On + On 4. Fatboy Slim - Praise You 5. Groove Armada - If Everybody Look the Same 6. Leftfield & John Lydon - Open Up 7. The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats 8. Prodigy - Voodoo People 9. The KLF - 3am Eternal 10. Playgroup - Number One 11. Faithless - Insomnia 12. Daft Punk - One More Time Bonus track: 13. Snap! - The Power I'd buy this album with the speed of light Worth to mention: The Shamen, E-Type, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Scooter, Jam & Spoon, 808 State, Futureshock, Haddaway, C-Block PS I'm quite surprised to find here so many unknown (to me) artists listed as "best of dance"... Also: Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe are surely Britain's most successful Dance duo of the last decade. What about: The Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada or Orbital?! Basement are quite unknown (possible reasons: weird cover arts, weird music videos and so on). What TV station would broadcast an awful video like this one? The most succesful Dance duo (not only Britain) of the last decade was THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Even my grandma heard about them :D Edited March 21, 200817 yr by Alin
March 21, 200817 yr Author Basement are quite unknown (possible reasons: weird cover arts, weird music videos and so on). What TV station would broadcast an awful video like this one? The most succesful Dance duo (not only Britain) of the last decade was THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Even my grandma heard about them :D Are you nuts? In the last decade 1998-2007: Basement Jaxx have had 17 UK top40 hit singles compared to 11 by the Chemical Brothers. Basement Jaxx have had 3 US #1 Dance singles compared to 0 by the Chemical Brothers in the last decade. Basement Jaxx have won a Grammy for Best Electronica/Dance album, Chemical Brothers have not. Basement Jaxx have headlined Glastonbury in 2005, Chemical Brothers have played Glastonbury but have never headlined. Basement Jaxx's singles collection reached UK#1 and spent over a year on the album Top75; Chemical Brothers singles collection only made UK#9 and spent just 7 weeks inside the Top75. Basement Jaxx won two MTV USA VMAs for Best Electronica/Dance video & Best Directional debut both for "Where's Your Head At" the video, which you have posted and described as awful. Which ironically was played to death by UK music channels back in 2001/2. Seriously if you think the Chemical Brothers are the best Dance act of the last decade then I pity your music taste, as personally I think they've been treading water in the last decade with a handful of exceptions, because the majority of their best work can be found on their first two albums 1995's Exit Planet Dust & 1997's Dig Your Own Hole. Lastly, the fact you don't know some of the dance tracks I selected surprised me, because I fully expected to be criticised for picking obvious commercial and well-known tracks.
March 21, 200817 yr I don't think you can compare the two in the last decade! By the time Basement Jaxx had their first single The Chemical Brothers had already had the majority of their success and good songs. From the last 10 years Basement Jaxx win hands down. But from Chemical Brothers first 10 years to Basement Jaxx first 10 years is a much more difficult comparison. I much prefer the Chemical Brothers, but I don't know if I'd consider them more successful.
March 21, 200817 yr Basement Jaxx's 'Where's Your Head At' is one of the best pop videos ever made - and it got played constantly when it came out - rightly so. My problem with Basement Jaxx is their penchant for carnival.... I can do without Red Alert and all the flimsy stuff off their debut album - too often it veered scarily close to cheese. I think their only truly great end-to-end album was 'Kish Kash'.... superb singles, a cracking Siouxsie Sioux appearance and not one song a duffer. Yet it's the least liked of their albums by the mainstream. I think it's a masterpiece - production and song-wise. Chemical Brothers... often, it's a great video, shame about the song. Their first 2 albums were incredible, and the last album had some great songs, too - however, inbetween these, they've released some truly Godawful music. Plus, they take themselves way too seriously. I've seen them play Glastonbury.... and they were ok, actually... great lightshow..... but I've seen far better dance acts there to be honest.
March 21, 200817 yr Worth to mention: Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Scooter, Haddaway, PS I'm quite surprised to find here so many unknown (to me) artists listed as "best of dance"... Again, the 3 acts here - I wouldn't call them in any way 'dance' acts - all 3 are just cheesy Euro - Sophie Ellis Bextor? Nooo....... And there's not a single act mentioned here I haven't heard of - each and every participant has posted a great selection - varied, knowledgable and not too heavily reliant on the obvious chart 'dance' acts like Faithless et al. I'm deeply shocked that out of all Underworld's vast, superb catalogue, you picked 'Born Slippy' - I can only presume their first classic album passed you by - any track on this album blows the done-to-death Born Slippy totally out of the water. In fact, almost every one of their singles is superior to Born Slippy - but, unfortunately, this seems to be the one Joe Public remembers. I like that you've mentioned Playgroup in your top 10, however - an act who were stupidly overlooked by the masses, but released probably one of the finest ever dance albums. And anything that features the wonderful Edwyn Collins is just fine by me.
March 21, 200817 yr Chemical Brothers can be a bit hit and miss for me at times. They flirt to much with indie/rock musicians for my liking (I know this is preference only). My personal favorite of theirs is 'Electrobank' - it just builds and builds into a whirlwind! I would say their golden era was the 'Dig Your Own Hole' album, but some gems can be found on their most recent album aswell. Basement Jaxx acheived the near impossible - crafting accessible pop-melodic dance music that appealed to album buyers at the same time. Their first album 'Remedy' remains my single favorite album of all time. 'Rooty' was great, but lacked the skill of it's first. 'Kish Kash' is a very varied and rich album, but I also find it difficult in parts - their venture into lounge style dance music sounded uncomfortable (a sound much better done by Royksopp and the like). Their last album 'Crazy Itch Radio' received mixed reviews and was a commercial flop. It basically sounded like XL tried to turn them into a cash cow by forging out teeny-bop pop songs like 'Hush Boy'. A real shame though, the album is actually really good and there are some killer tracks: 'Hey You' featuring Robyn is a corker and would be a wise choice for single considering her popularity at the moment and 'When The Lights Go Down' is bliss. Underworld... hmmm... a find their stuff all a bit too long-winded for me personally. 'Born Slippy', like russ has pointed out, has now been played to death beyond repair now. I like 'King Of Snake' and 'Cowgirl' though.
March 21, 200817 yr Best dance (post disco) album? It could be this one: 1. Underworld - Born Slippy .NUXX Bored to buggery with this one really... 2. Paul van Dyk - For An Angel Never really mad about this one, over-rated. 3. Orbital - Halcyon + On + On Orbital have the occasional choon, but tracks like this bore me to tears. 4. Fatboy Slim - Praise You Argh! I HATE this track with amighty passion! His first album is ace, everything else was rubbish though. 5. Groove Armada - If Everybody Look the Same Great track from a (usually) great act! 6. Leftfield & John Lydon - Open Up Their material in 1999 was dull as dishwater, but their stuff like this in the early 90s was top notch. 7. The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats Great track, but they've had better. 8. Prodigy - Voodoo People 1994 was a seminal year for the prodge, it all went iffy from Firestarter onwards... 9. The KLF - 3am Eternal Yeah great track and a number one?? 10. Playgroup - Number One Vaguely remember this... never really liked it at the time. 11. Faithless - Insomnia Can't go wrong with this! 12. Daft Punk - One More Time Much better DP tracks than this really, gets on my titties this. Bonus track: 13. Snap! - The Power :puke2:
March 22, 200817 yr ScottyEm... try to get your hands on copies of 2 Underworld albums - the first one, Dubnobasswithmyheadman (although try asking for that in a record shop :P ), and the latest, Oblivion With Bells- both are stonking, I promise.

Snap! - The Power :puke2: i dont think its very nice to take someones personal choices and lay into them like this m8... the idea of 'my album of' is to let people express a personal opinion on a subject and not to define an 'ultimate' album of. no ones right or wrong... just different.
March 22, 200817 yr I wouldn't be insulted if the shoe was on the other foot - I liked a fair number of those tracks (although the green face for snap was a little OTT, bit I really didn't like snap!).
March 22, 200817 yr Snap were as serious as cancer when they said rhythm is a dancer... ahem  ;) (worst lyric ever, surely?)
March 22, 200817 yr Snap were as serious as cancer when they said rhythm is a dancer... ahem  ;) (worst lyric ever, surely?) indeed it has to be....
March 22, 200817 yr well ive collected my tracks for my dance album. ive NEVER danced in my life, so to me the track has to deliver more then just a beat ( which is all a dance track requires ). most of my favs are too recent to be classed as 'retro', as i didnt really get into dance much until recently (relative). 1 oceanic - 'insanity' ok not a 'cool' track but just about the first dance track i liked. 2 shamen - 'boss drum' the track that got my interest into the possibilities dance music opend for you, spiritually. fantasticly inspirational lyrics appealed to this part hippy interested in spirituality (at the time) and lead me on a path of enlightenment! lol. 3 usura - 'open your mind' title says it all and supports the shamens 'dance to trance' message, a great track with a great beat. 4 utah saints - 'something good' using one of the best examples of intelligent sampling, a super track which has just been re-issued... not sure about this. 5 jam and spoon ft plavka - 'right in the night (fall in love with music)' i like this gentle melodic track alot. 6 mc sar and the real mccoy - 'another night' ok, another pop/dance/euro track but the melody works for me! 7 prodigy - 'no good (start the dance)' what a corker of a track! its very hard not to move in some way to what i consider the prodigys finest hour. 8 felix - 'dont you want my love' not alot i can say other then its a fantastic track! 9 age of love - 'age of love' i cant say much more then what russ has already said. a superb, atmospheric track. 10 energy 52 - 'cafe del mar' iconic standard, again agreeing with russ that possibly the best dance tracks were instrumentals , most of my later favs were. 11 paul van dyk - 'for an angel' excellant laid back track. 12 chicane - 'offshore' love chicanes material, this was their first hit and it was a goodie! i resisted the temptation to include my fav trance tracks as i regard trance slightly different to 'dance', although several of my tracks listed qualify for a 'trance' album too.
March 22, 200817 yr Author All in all this has been a really good thread to read, as Dance music covers a fairly wide ranging musical pallet. Snap were as serious as cancer when they said rhythm is a dancer... ahem  ;) (worst lyric ever, surely?) It could be, but I reckon you've accidentally stumbled on a great idea for an entertaining thread! :naughty:
