Has anyone heard the J-Pop goddess' latest single? I know I'm far from the best-qualified to talk about J-Pop as I've only recently got into it myself, but this lady is incredible. I hope some people actually respond in this thread because I can only think of 1 who I know will. :heehee:

Anyway, 60s70s80s is a triple-A side single which was released this month in Japan. The single consists of 3 A-sides, each representing a different era in terms of both the styling of the videos and the sound of the songs:

New Look; this one is the '60s' single. It samples The Supremes' Baby Love.

Rock Steady; this represents the '70s' element. It samples Aretha Franklin's Rock Steady.

What A Feeling; the '80s' A-side samples Irene Cara's What A Feeling.

Whilst Rock Steady and What A Feeling share their names with the songs they sample, they do only sample them; they are not cover versions. Like nearly all J-Pop, the songs are sung mostly in Japanese with English snippets included. New Look and Rock Steady are quite nice songs (RS's PV - music video - is fabulous!) but What A Feeling is totally where it's at. The song is incredible! The sample is perfect and the PV is gloriously techno.

Anyway the 60s70s80s single hit #1 in Japan this week! :D That might not seem like a big thing but this is Namie's first #1 single in 10 years, and after just 2 weeks it is already her biggest-seller in 7 years. For those who like the A-sides, here are some more of Namie's more recent singles/PVs to check out on Dailymotion:

Baby Don't Cry; 2007; Single [#3 Japan; 48th-biggest seller of 07]

Hide & Seek; 2007; PV-only, filmed for the 'Play' album CD/DVD edition

I hope some of the more open-minded Buzzjackers will give Namie a go because I did, having never listened to any J-pop previously, and I fell in love with her! She is easily the most accessible of all the J-Pop singers that I've listened to so far; her sound is a fantastic mix of hip-pop, pop and R&B, and she in general produces quite Western-friendly music. Anyway - enjoy!

^_^

JPop appreciation!

Namie Amuro is the ''Queen of Hip-Pop'' - and is one of the most prolific females in Japanese history. My personal favourite song is ''CAN YOU CELEBRATE?'' it's amazing!! XD

I wouldn't call myself a Amuro fan as such, but the ''PLAY'' album is my personal favourite of '07

The Queen she is. I adore her! It's all so sudden it's crazy. :heehee: Would you say Sweet 19 Blues is one of the most important albums in J-Pop history? :o I know very little about Namie pre-Style or anything, but there's a discussion thread on Namie's debut, on UKMix, and they all seem to think it is. Don't you just know this thread will just be posted in by us two? :heehee:
That song that you sent me a while ago was okay. :magic:

I was the same with BoA :naughty:

And I wouldn't really say it's one of the most important albums ever, as it didn't really switch anything up or be too different from anything musically, but it's the 12th biggest selling album ever in Japan [it sold 3,359,450 copies] so it was very popular at the time. Her style now is very different from what it initially was, one of the reasons why her career went downhill for most of this decade. She was a pop act up until ''Break The Rules'' when she began experimenting with R&B sounds, and slowly she's built up a new fanbase. You can get people who love her past work, yet loathe her now. If I may reccomend you her first ''BEST'' album ''181920'' to try out her early works if you're interested :P

and I am aware of this :P although it's better than just me like it normally so, i'm good

Ah, okay. Well I've got a link for the Sweet 19 Blues which I'll download soon, and for I'll get one for 181920 soon. ^_^ I've just downloaded Break The Rules too. So much J-Pop to tide me over!

Do you know if Ayu's Mirrorcle World has leaked in HQ yet btw? I want at least a PV rip of it, because the song is lush. But I can't find a link anywhere! Pity me! :heehee:

-_-

Hush, I've sent you three Namie songs on msn and you were totally unimpressed by them all. You don't count. -_-

Not true! ;o I said I didn't mind the last one that you sent me... Plus we all know that songs I send you are better anyway. :kink:

I have a MQ rip which I can send if you want? D:

I remember first getting into JPop all those years ago, it's so amazing to just dive in head first into an industry so different to ours, although it's kind of all I listen to now [as well as KPop] I always think it's best to listen to the big artists first [Mr Children, B'z, Ayumi, BoA, Hikki] and then as you get more used to it you find all sorts of other amazng artists. Just like here, the best artists are usually the less successful. It always annoys me when people are just like ''oh yeah Japanese music, isn't it all morning musume and ayumi?'' because that couldn't be further from the truth, it's probably the most diverse country musically <3.

if you ever want a good site to download from, try bww2 forums, the volume of music it has is incredible o:

Wow, thanks for recommending that place - it's massive! And I found a near-HQ of Mirrorcle World on there! :D I'm going to listen to her remix albums in a bit too (although I don't know most of the original songs :heehee:).

Everyone on Popjustice loves What A Feeling! That song has such appeal to any general fan of dance-pop. It deserves it's #1.

So is no-one else going to check out the goddess that is Namie? Go onnn.

I have not heard of her, but I will most definitely check her out. :o I'm a big fan of Japanese music, especially Utada and GO!GO!7188.

^'Black Diamond' PV, by Namie and Double. I think it's technically Double's song but Namie sings just as much and absolutely owns the PV. :P fabulous.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lol I hate Namie more and more as time goes on

It's not being released as a single, it's a promo track for DOUBLE for her "BEST Collaborations" album. :D DOUBLE used to be a duo until one of them died of a brain tumor or something ~

Namie's best song:

LOL isn't it the most ~so bad it's good~ pv you have ever seen? The full version of the song is epic though <3
