I began to get into the charts and chart music in 1974 so this chart is just a bit early for me, but close enough to 1974 that I would have heard quite a few of the songs on the radio at the time.

It isn't a classic chart though and to be honest there are few songs on there that I like. The songs that stick out in my mind, from the time are:

Cum On Feel The Noize - Slade

Blockbuster - Sweet

I always bracket these two songs, and groups, together. I was in Junior school at the time and they were the two groups that were most popular, but it seemed to be one or the other that people liked, never both. I actually cared for neither (at the time!). In fact, I don't think I had a favourite group until 1974 (Mud).

Power To All Our Friends - Cliff

Part Of The Union - Strawbs

Tie A Yellow Ribbon... - Dawn

3 songs that seemed to be playing on the radio all the time. For some reason the Strawbs song sticks out the most, maybe it's because I live in a former mining town that seemed to be eternally on strike in the early to mid 70s! Perhaps the local radio station played it more than the others...

The other songs in the chart, well I know quite a few of them but I don't associate them with March 1973. Probably because I wasn't really following the charts at the time so I have little to tie them to March 1973.

I was only 4 so remember very little! More likely the songs I heard regularly during the rest of the 70s and after. Very little of interest here apart from mainly the Glam stuff. Superstition is a classic and 20th Century Boy is my fav T. Rex song.

2 Slade - Cum On Feel The Noize

3 T Rex - 20th Century Boy

7 Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song

10 Alice Cooper - Hello Hurray

14 The Faces - Cindy Incidentally

20 Roxy Music - Pyjamarama

25 The Sweet - Blockbuster

30 Thin Lizzy - Whisky In The Jar

33 Geordie - All Because Of You (featuring Brian Johnson later of AC/DC)

36 Stevie Wonder - Superstition

I remember recording songs onto my reel to reel tape recorder from "dial a disc" .

The number was 160.

My mum and dad used to go mad at me if they realised I had been listening because of the phone bill!!

Part of the Union was one of the songs I kept listening to so that I could get the following lyrics:

Now I'm a union man

Amazed at what I am

I say what I think

That the company stinks

Yes I'm a union man.

When we meet in the local hall

I'll be voting with them all

With a hell of a shout

It's out brothers out

And the rise of the factory's fall.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union

You don't get me I'm part of the union

You don't get me I'm part of the union

Till the day I die, till the day I die.

As a union man I'm wise

To the lies of the company spies

And I don't get fooled

By the factory rules

'Cause I always read between the lines.

And I always get my way

If I strike for higher pay

When I show my card

To the Scotland Yard

This what I say.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union

You don't get me I'm part of the union

You don't get me I'm part of the union

Till the day I die, till the day I die.

Before the union did appear

My life was half as clear

Now I've got the power

To the working hour

And every other day of the year.

So though I'm a working man

I can ruin the government's plan

Though I'm not too hard

The sight of my card

Makes me some kind of superman.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union

You don't get me I'm part of the union

You don't get me I'm part of the union

Till the day I die, till the day I die.
