Posted April 4, 200817 yr To start the charts this week, I think I must just give Trevs our regards, and hope he gets better soon. I usually just supply the charts, but this week it`s the whole thread  Anyway this week, I will be running a small competition. More on that as we go. As usual the top 15 albums, the films, dvds, and singles. Along with a trip back to April 1977. Which coincidently was my 10th anniversary in broadcasting. So, maybe I might remember something about the time!!!!! To start with, here`s the top 10 films W/K ending 11th Apr 2008 01 NE 27 DRESSES 02 03 STEP UP TO THE STREETS 03 02 SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES 04 01 HORTON HEARS A WHO 05 NE DRILL BIT TAYLOR 06 04 MEET THE SPARTANS 07 05 10,000 BC 08 06 VANTAGE POINT 09 07 GAME PLAN 10 NE EL ORFANATO Can`t remember when I last went to the cinema. Was the number 5 film named after me? No, oh well!!!! :naughty: The top dvd rentals in Britain W/K ending 11th Apr 2008 01 04 STARDUST 02 05 RUN FAT BOY RUN 03 06 THE BRAVE ONE 04 02 BEOWULF 05 01 30 DAYS OF NIGHT 06 08 MR BROOKS 07 09 THE INVASION 08 10 THE KINGDOM 09 11 PLANET TERROR 10 12 RATATOUILLE DVDs going back up this week. Now then how many of us did Beowulf in history at school? Depending on the teacher, it was pronounced differently. Some referred to it as BEARWULF, others as BOEWULF. Here cometh this week`s albums, mrib`s albums also include the Saturday sales, of last weekend. 01 01 NOW 69 - VARIOUS ARTISTS 02 NE CLUBLAND CLASSIX - VARIOUS ARTISTS 03 NE ACCELERATE - R.E.M. 04 04 ROCKFERRY - DUFFY 05 10 SPIRIT - LEONA LEWIS 06 NE GARAGE CLASSICS M.O.S. - VARIOUS ARTISTS 07 05 ASHES TO ASHES - VARIOUS ARTISTS 08 09 ALL THE RIGHT REASONS - NICKELBACK 09 08 DREAMING OUT LOUD - ONE REPUBLIC 10 NE SHINE - ESTELLE 11 10 FLOORFILLERS - VARIOUS ARTISTS 12 11 BACK TO BLACK - AMY WINEHOUSE 13 02 PRETTY ODD - PANIC AT THE DISCO 14 NE EDGE OF THE 80s - VARIOUS ARTISTS 15 03 ANTIDOTES - FOALS Lots of compilations around at the moment, with 8 VA comps in the top 30, and 5 inside the top 20. R.E.M`s popularity is definately not waining. But ESTELLE does not match the number one, of the single. Rightyho, back to 1977, and them there albums back then the week of 9th Apr 77 01 02 PORTRAIT OF SINATRA - FRANK SINATRA 02 04 ARRIVAL - ABBA 03 01 20 GOLDEN GREATS - SHADOWS 04 06 STATUS QUO LIVE - STATUS QUO 05 03 ANIMALS - PINK FLOYD 06 05 ENDLESS FLIGHT - LEO SAYER 07 10 LIVE HITS - HOLLIES 08 08 20 GREAT HEARTBREAKERS - VARIOUS ARTISTS 09 15 GREATEST HITS - ABBA 10 13 RUMOURS - FLEETWOOD MAC 11 12 EVITA - OST 12 09 COMING OUT - MANHATTEN TRANSFER 13 14 PETER GABRIEL - PETER GABRIEL 14 07 IN YOUR MIND - BRYAN FERRY 15 11 LOW - DAVID BOWIE 16 19 A NEW WORLD RECORD - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA 17 25 EVERY FACE TELLS A STORY - CLIFF RICHARD 18 23 HOTEL CALIFORNIA - EAGLES 19 18 DAVID SOUL - DAVID SOUL 20 16 BEST OF JOHN DENVER VOL 2 - JOHN DENVER Well done to the Big Frank in 77. STATUS QUO, and the HOLLIES were singing live. Two groups who do, a good live performance. Some acts do not do a good live performance, and sound better dans la studio. Little LEO SAYER had already had the number 2 single with YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCING (which the BARRON KNIGHTS had a bit of fun with as "My Tailor Took My Pants In, But he Left In all the Pins"!! 20 GREAT HEARTBREAKERS was guaranteed to make you either cry, or scream, with the likes of LEADER OF THE PACK and TELL LAURA I LOVE HER. There was the EVITA Soundtrack, better without Madonna, maybe!!! FLEETWOOD MAC lifted millions with RUMOURS but found it hard with the singles taken off it. Shades of GLENN MILLER etc with MANHATTEN TRANSFER, to which an album from GLEN went in at 21, entitled UNFORGETTABLE. DAVID BOWIE, BRYAN FERRY and PETER GABRIEL scored with singles off their albums, and STARSKY AND HUTCH made DAVID SOUL more popular as a singer in Britain, than in the States. I found it so amusing in the 21 - 30 part of that chart when GLEN MILLER was followed by LPs from EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER, BAD COMPANY, followed by LENA MARTELL. Right in the top 40, THE DAMNED featuring the God that was CAPTAIN SENSIBLE, followed by country by SLIM WHITMAN! Diverse or what!!!!!! Here is the 77 singles chart 01 01 KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU - ABBA 02 02 GOING IN WITH MY EYES OPEN - DAVID SOUL 03 04 WHEN - SHOWADDYWADDY 04 03 CHANSON D`AMOUR - MANHATTEN TRANSFER 05 06 I DON`T WANT TO PUT A HOLD ON YOU - BERNI FLINT 06 07 MOODY BLUE - ELVIS PRESLEY 07 05 SOUND AND VISION - DAVID BOWIE 08 09 SUNNY - BONEY M. 09 12 RED LIGHT SPELLS DANGER - BILLY OCEAN 10 10 OH BOY (THE MOOD I`M IN) - BROTHERHOOD OF MAN 11 08 TORN BETWEEN TWO LOVERS - MARY MACGREGOR 12 13 LOVE HIT ME - MAXINE NIGHTINGALE 13 19 YOU DON`T HAVE TO BE A STAR - MARILYN MCCOO AND BILLY DAVIS JNR 14 16 LAY BACK IN THE ARMS OF SOMEONE - SMOKIE 15 18 MY KINDA LIFE - CLIFF RICHARD 16 11 BOOGIE NIGHTS - HEATWAVE 17 38 FREE - DENIECE WILLIAMS 18 24 GIMME SOME - BRENDON 19 31 ROCK BOTTOM - LYNSEY DE PAUL AND MIKE MORAN 20 14 ROCKARIA - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA 21 17 BABY I KNOW - RUBETTES 22 30 HAVE I THE RIGHT - DEAD END KIDS 23 22 HOLD BACK THE NIGHT - GRAHAM PARKER AND THE RUMOUR 24 26 TOGETHER - O.C. SMITH 25 NE I WANNA GET NEXT TO YOU - ROSE ROYCE 26 20 YOU`LL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU`RE MISSING - REAL THING 27 45 PEARL`S A SINGER - ELKIE BROOKES 28 21 WHEN I NEED YOU - LEO SAYER 29 15 ROMEO - MR BIG 30 23 ANOTHER SUITCASE IN ANOTHER HALL - BARBARA DICKSON ABBA reigning supreme in 77. BERNI FLINT looking a tad like a cross between TOM SELLECK and STEVE WRIGHT won OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS with HUGHIE GREEN (I mean that most sincerely folks)!!! ;) DEAD END KIDS won NEW FACES with the re-make of HAVE I THE RIGHT, cheek by jaw with the REAL THING who won it 2 years before. ELVIS recorded MOODY BLUE in Feb 76, and scored here in 77. Other remakes with SHOWADDYWADDY, MANHATTEN TRANSFER, BONEY M, and GRAHAM PARKER. MARILYN MCCOO and BILLY DAVIS JNR were originally with the FIFTH DIMENSION. LEO SAYER was off the album with an ex-number one single. BARBARA DICKSON out of EVITA with a song. PEARL`S A SINGER and ELKIE BROOKES became her first hit, remember VINEGAR JOE with ROBERT PALMER? Actually PEARLS A SINGER became the novelty football ditty "EARL`S A WINGER". BRENDON with GIMME SOME, was a cover of a dance/soul piece. I wonder what ABBA fans thought of BRENDON`s cover of "ROCK ME" Which just missed the top 50, in September 77? Meanwhile LYNSEY DE PAUL came second in the EUROVISION CONTEST with ROCK BOTTOM aided by writer/composer MIKE MORAN. The contest was postponed for a week in 77, due to a BBC technicians strike, so the song seesawed about the chart. On the strike week BBC1 repeated the 1976, MORECAMBE AND WISE CHRISTMAS SHOW. Also on TV in April 77, was the FANTASTIC JOURNEY (sci-fi, in vain of LOST IN SPACE kinda thing). ROOTS was the TV blokbuster that had as hooked this Easter week in 77. BBC1 were also repeating the first 2 series of SOME MOTHERS DO `AVE `EM. There were no soaps on the BBC at that point, hurray :yahoo: Over on ITV, they were re-running selected episodes of ON THE BUSES...That brings in the promised competition.... To win a dvd of 4 episodes from ON THE BUSES, answer these 2 questions: 1) What other comedy series that was shown on the BBC in the 60s, and was re-made in 1977 for LWT, featured 2 stars from ON THE BUSES? 2) What were the names of the 2 stars (both character, and real names) that were in the other Sitcom? (note: one was in the BBC series, and one was in the LWT series) Send me a personal message with your answer (not on this thread). Then, I will get back to the first person, who gets it correct :D Let`s finish with the singles charts. First the Physical top 10 (at it`s end almost) 01 estelle 02 mariah carey 03 flo rida 04 kooks 05 chris brown 06 duffy 07 leona 08 courteeners 09 utah saints 10 girls aloud Mariah blew `em apart in Woolworths and HMV and are number one in both shops! FRAGMA will be top 10, next week, and will the BLACK KIDS hit the top 10 with "I`m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend To Dance?" I would guess maybe!! :D Outer quarters of the top 75, show this week KILLA at 57, SPENCER DAVIS GROUP (What, why, how?) at 51, JORDIN SPARKS at 53. NEWTON FAULKNER, TIMBALAND, and COUNT AND SINDEN in the top 70...bubbling around under the top 75, COPS AND ROBBERS is the HOOSIERS newie. SONIC HEARTS, and RONI SIZE are the losers this week, but do feature in a pure physical top 75. That`s it, Don`t forget the Competition. Enter Now!!!!!!! :yahoo: Edited April 11, 200817 yr by davetaylor
April 4, 200817 yr Author Hey Dave, what happened to Bullet For My Valentine`s single? Bullet For My Valentine enter at 64, with "Hearts Burst Into Fire" :(
April 4, 200817 yr The only track I remember from the 1977 chart is Rock Bottom as I remember they represented Britain for the Eurovision Song Contest, 1978 was the year I got interested in listening to the charts. Thanks for posting a very enjoyable thread as usual, hope Trevs gets well soon.
April 5, 200817 yr Dave, what is the possibility of "Break The Ice", getting to the top 20, on Suns Official top 40? :D
April 5, 200817 yr Thanks Dave! And get well soon to Trevs. That chart from 1977 is a strange mixture of music styles - in fact that seemed to be the norm for 1977. The emphasis is definitely on middle of the road sounds and acts though. One big change to chart compilation in 1977 was the inclusion of Virgin record stores in the chart panel which (ultimately) led to the balance of the chart changing but it wasn't enough in early 1977 to make much difference. That top 10 was as far removed from being fresh sounding as it could have been. Only Bowie and (to some extent) Boney M sounded like they were appealing to more than the MOR crowd. Though Billy Ocean did have a rather catch song! The chart in 2008 is pretty much as I expected, though Radiohead may be top 20 in the OCC chart tomorrow. If nothing else, it's an interesting way of selling various versions of the download! Spencer Davis Group are charting as the song is featured in a TV ad. As for the quiz, well I'm 99% certain I know the answer to question 1 but I'm struggling on question 2...

It was put back wasn`t it? I wondered why the song had apparently slipped by Britney and SFG, as it seemed likely from other mids, it was heading top 20.
April 5, 200817 yr Author Dave, what is the possibility of "Break The Ice", getting to the top 20, on Suns Official top 40? :D I don`t think it will do it by Sunday. Actually Scouting For Girls, are neck and neck, with Radiohead on here it looks (they could all go back down the other way). Snoop Dogg could arise between them. Kanye West looks set to knock out Gnarls Barkley (a good fighter, what!!) Expect to see Fragma in the top 30 tomorrow, and Black Kids, will be around the top 50, too (they will blow the top 10 apart next week). Edited April 5, 200817 yr by davetaylor

April 5, 200817 yr I ain`t heard the Black Kids song, when`s it released? On Monday, the track has got a good chance of a top 10 hit, they were on Jools Holland last night. I'm glad Jools Holland is back, some of the acts featured on the show with new releases will get some promotion out of it, Estelle was on the show.
April 5, 200817 yr Author I ain`t heard the Black Kids song, when`s it released? On Monday. I don`t expect Sam Sparro will be no` 1 next week. But Fragma will be edge top 5, Black Kids not far behind. Elliot Minor will be in the top 20, too, and maybe Count and Sinden. With Britney also top 15, for sure.
April 5, 200817 yr I must admit I see another 5 weeker at #1 following on from Basshunter and Duffy  its been a while now since we had a track staying at #1 for a week or 2. I reckon Sam Sparro will peak at #2
April 5, 200817 yr Author Chiefly now the competition is declared closed. Congratulations to: Brian Hankin (who got it, just before Manic Kangaroo). For the lady that got it confused with another sitcom, here are the answers: Question 1) The name of the comedy (first seen on BBC in the 60s, then ITV, in 1977/8 was: The Rag Trade Question 2) The 2 stars of On The Buses who were also in The Rag Trade were Reg Varney (he played Reg in the Rag Trade in the 60s, then Stan Butler in On The Buses). Anna Karen played Olive in both (the same character, in the 77 Rag Trade). Obviously, in On The Buses she was married to Arthur, so her surname would not have been Butler. Later in On The Buses, she divorced Arthur, when Michael Robbins quit in the final series, followed quickly by Reg Varney. Reg was in many a variety show, and a great all round entertainer. Stephen Lewis who played Inspector Blake, went on to appear in the hardly remembered spin-off "Don`t Drink the Water" in 1975. Playing the same character, with Pat Coombs, as his sidekick. To avoid, the confusion of the lady(who will remain nameless): The Glums was originally part of BBC radio series "Take It From Here", with Jmmy Edwards, Dick Bentley and June Whitfield. ITV, also ressurected it for "Bruce Forsyth`s Big Night", in 1978. The Big Night flopped, but The Glums, had a new half hour series for LWT, in 1979 with Jimmy Edwards, Ian Lavender and Patricia Brake in the roles. Meanwhile Dick Bentley appeared in "Some Mothers Do `Ave `Em", as an Australian related to the one, and only Frank Spencer. Brian, I will mail you privately, for your details to receive the dvd. Manic was a close second, so I will send him a consolation prize, via email. Thanks to the 3 people that entered, and don`t worry to our younger members, their will be other contests in your range in the coming future, so stay tuned!! Edited April 5, 200817 yr by davetaylor
