December 4, 200816 yr I'm not over-rating anyone. I just think there are more important discussions to have about the subject than what's growing on his face, it's stupid And I don't think he overspent while we were in the Championship. He spent enough to get us up the table, but he instilled a confidence within the team which got us promoted as Champions after we made a miserable start to the season and didn't look like we were getting anywhere He paid over the odds when we returned to the Premier League, but hey, if it kept us up no fans were complaining. And keep us up it did. Either way you look at it mate, we had a Championship team in our first season back in the prem and it's because of Roy and the fighting spirit of the team that we scored a dozen or so late goals which helped earn us valuable points and ultimately kept us up And it's not just the effect he's had on the pitch, he's brought about changes in many different areas in the club, including getting us a massive Irish following thanks purely to the fact that it was Roy Keane managing us So people can say what the fuck they like about "Roy's spent this much and that much" because the majority of the players he's brought in have done what they were brought in to do. Aye, he's bought flops but there isn't a manager alive who hasn't bought dud players before. Redknapp's done it, Keegan "the Messiah" has done it. Even the almighty Sir Alex Ferguson has bought really shit players. At the end of the day Roy is only human and people are VERY quick to forget he's still only learning the trade as a manager. It's not like he retired, spent weeks, months, years learning the tricks of the trade then came to us. He literally joined us a few months later with no management experience and I for one think he did a very good job and i'm gutted he's left You had an Irish following though before Keane as the chairman Niall Quinn is Irish and the Sunderland money men are Irish, Quinn has massive respect among the fans, remember him paying for flights to get the fans home after their plane broke down ? that kind of thing endears him to Irish fans as much as Keane's name, also Keane polarises opinion among the Irish, I have Irish friends that consider him a judas for walking out on the national team at the world cup
December 4, 200816 yr Great players don't make great managers, can you think of any top player in the last 20 years that has consistently been a good manager ? Dalglish/Keegan/Souness/Hoddle are the nearest I guess but none of them have consistently achieved whereas the likes of Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho etc etc did nothing as players, Keane is all hype because of his successful playing career, I suspect Keane will have a Keegan type career where his name opens doors with big teams but achieves very little Nope I kinda agree with you that great players don't make great managers, but it's not to say that they don't. It's true that the best managers out there were players that never really made it, but I certainly think within the next 10 years or so we'll be seeing a lot of bigger name players taking up management jobs. I think a lot of it managers get given jobs based on reputation... they should really learn the trade of the lower leagues first (like Ince and Adans) before making the step up to the top leagues imo.

Think you've got that one slightly confused. Sunderland had won Cardiff 1-0 at Ninian Park and Easyjet refused to allow the Sunderland fans (from Sunderland, not Ireland) to board the flight back home. Hearing of this, Quinny paid taxi fares home from Cardiff for every single fan. Not quite sure how that would get him any more respect from Irish fans, I got the impression it earned him respect from fans of most clubs?

December 5, 200816 yr Martin O'Neill - Honours as a player and manager! Celtic though, a 2 team league effectively, even Souness won multiple trophies up there when he managed Rangers and even had modest success at Liverpool but no one would call Souness a great manager while they are sober O'Neill may well be considered a great manager in the future but the Villa trophy cabinet under him is still empty
December 5, 200816 yr People criticise Keane for the amount of money he spent and yes he probably has wasted a fair bit and overspent on many but at the end of the day he got Sunderland promoted and kept them in the Premiership because of it. He did the opposite to what Birmingham and Derby did and they're back playing in the Championship now. He'll learn from his mistakes and I do think he will become a good manager in the future. I'll be DELIGHTED if he does become our next manager, though 1) I very much doubt it and 2) I still want Calderwood to be a success. And I don't understand why so many people are criticising him for resigning and calling him a bottler. He's seen that something's not working and decided that there needs to be changes, he's done it with the playing staff and it's not worked, it needs to be something else. Too many managers outstay their welcome waiting for the sack and a big pay-off.

He took over at Celtic after years of Rangers domination (Celtic had just one League title and one FA Cup in the previous 12 seasons) and won them three League Championship's and three FA Cups. December 5, 200816 yr I don't see Keane going to Forest, he went to Sunderland because of the Irish connection but I think his ego is too big to join a small team not to mention he would have little or no money at Forest I think he will sit out the season and take over from Kinnear at Newcastle in the summer unless Strachan quits Celtic in which case he would go there

After our 0-0 draw at Doncaster last week Calderwood came on the pitch, shook hands with all the players and went over to our supporters and mouthed the word 'thank you'. Most fans were shocked he was still in a job for the Barnsley game at the weekend but apparently he's only here still because the board wanted a quick transistion and weren't in a position to appoint their new man. As all the candidates the media lined up (Davies, Allardyce, Bootroyd, Dowie, Pardew) are all currently unemployed it's unlikely it could've been any of those. This then lead to ex-players names being banded around. Pearce (never in a million years), Clough (same), Laws (new contract signed last week), Keane (???) I don't think it'll happen either however I wouldn't be overly surprised if it did..........

THANK SWEET MERCIFUL CHRIST, somebody speaking sense And tbh, I could see Keane going to Forest. But not yet. He'd do well for you, but it would be interesting to see how he'd cope with no money to spend. I dare say he'd sign a couple of players that didn't quite make it at Sunderland (at least on loan)
December 5, 200816 yr Keane did well at Sunderland. He did get them into the Premier League, and I know it's not always his fault but Sunderland have been a very inconsistent team this season. Ofc a lot of it is down to the players, but the fans always get on the managers back. I still think he'll become a really good manager one day, but sometimes I think that the managers who have a pretty rough managerial style can sometimes lose the dressing room, and I think that might have happened at Sunderland. I know he resigned, but maybe it was because he just couldn't get through to the players anymore? It wouldn't suprise me at all, the way some of the playera attitudes are. I don't think Keane will go to Forest either. I expect he'll take a long time out of management now, and he might not even go back into management. But i'm still fully expecting him to be Man Utd's next manager once Fergie retires. Hopefully Nigel Clough can go to Forest, so Burton don't get promoted.

December 9, 200816 yr and he's got them looking like proper 4th place contenders, ALOT better than Spurs. Had Redknapp started the season we would be fighting for 4th right now, 7 wins 2 defeats and 1 draw in 10 games under Redknapp

AND he won two League Cups with Leicester and keeping the ship steady in the premiership. I think that and how well he's done at Villa prove he's a great manager imo. If you actually stick with the manager for once then maybe you could challenge for the top four, you need to stop selling your good players too -_-

December 9, 200816 yr Ramos was a joke So much of a joke he's just been appointed the new Real Madrid manager!   Although tbf he was alright in Spain...
December 9, 200816 yr He is a good manager in Spain where he speaks the lingo and the players eat the food he likes but he was no use here as he couldn't speak English and made no effort to so while he is a good manager he will just be a good manager in Spain, he will never be a Wenger or Mourinho on the grounds of lack of English

But yes, i'm in no doubt Ramos was a strange manager. Spurs still have an average squad at best imo, and it will still be a while before they even realistically challange for the Top 4 imo.
