Pat Benatar….Love is a Battlefield…..Energetic singer from across the pond, I liked a few of her songs, but this one stands out for me.

Laura Branigan….Self Control….Love this song from ‘84, great video a little risqué at the time, shame she died in 2004 aged only 47.

Kate Bush…..Cloudbursting…..Lots I could have went for, but this one just beats Hounds of love and Running up that hill

Belinda Carlisle….Heaven is a place on earth….Former lead singer with all girl group the Go Go’s.

Tracy Chapman…Fast Car…Her only big hit but sounded good in the late 80’s when there was so much c**p around

Hazel Dean…..Searchin….Very energetic singer, one of these songs that can get stuck in your head

Annie Lennox…..Love is a stranger…………….Went for this one as it shows off her vocal talents

Madonna…..Papa don’t preach…….I’m not a huge Madonna fan, but I can’t leave her of this list for her contribution to music in the ‘80’s.

Alison Moyet…Is this love…………She is so underated, what a voice just love her singing, so many tracks I could have chosen

Sade….Your love is king…………Her first single, and to be honest the only one I liked

Lisa Stansfield….All around the world…….an R & B singer from Rochdale, well yes according to the Americans, late ‘89 so she just sneaks in, great voice

Suzanne Vega……Luka…………..I like a lot of her stuff, but wen’t for this song about child abuse, so sad

Kim Wilde….Kids in America……….Her first song and easily her best, an anthem for the early 80’s

Madonna…..Papa don’t preach…….I’m not a huge Madonna fan, but I can’t leave her of this list for her contribution to music in the ‘80’s.

Sade….Your love is king…………Her first single, and to be honest the only one I liked

Lisa Stansfield….All around the world…….an R & B singer from Rochdale, well yes according to the Americans, late ‘89 so she just sneaks in, great voice

I almost forgot about this track ^_^

Suzanne Vega……Luka…………..I like a lot of her stuff, but wen’t for this song about child abuse, so sad

sad song indeed

actually almost all her songs are quite nostalgic

anyway she's one of my all time fave singers

check also her latest album Beauty & Crime released in 2007: it's amazing!

Kim Wilde….Kids in America……….Her first song and easily her best, an anthem for the early 80’s

It's one of the most known songs of the 80s...

Ok here goes...

I was going to include female fronted bands but then I realised I could quite easily get an album together!

Carmel - Bad Day Just edges out More More More for me

Sam Brown - Stop Terrific track from Joe Brown's daughter

Kate Bush - Army Dreamers Everybody always chooses songs from Hounds of Love so here's one from Never For Ever

Neneh Cherry - Manchild Soooo love this.

Frida - I Know There's Something Going On Why this wasn't a hit from the ex-Abba singer I have no idea.

Danielle Dax - Cathouse Rocker from indie icon

Belinda Carlisle - Circle in the Sand Miles better than Heaven...

Grace Jones - Slave to the Rhythm The original Russell Harty baiting nutter makes swoonsome record shocker

Joan Jett - I Love Rock n' Roll Ultimate pissed as a fart chant a long track. Don't mention Britney...

Ofra Haza - Im Nin'Alu Seemingly sampled by everyone from here to Timbuktu

Monsoon - Ever So Lonely Brilliant asian pop from Sheila Chandra who basically was Monsoon

Hazel O' Connor - Eighth Day From Breaking Glass... great film and fantastic song. Prefer it to Will You.

oh lord....... i missed out kate bush!!!! i just jnew there was someone that id had in mind earlier in the day whilst thinking up my list!

id go for 'breathing' over 'army dreamers' and 'running up that hill'.

To be honest I could pick anything that she released from the 80s.

Mother Stands for Comfort would be a good alternative from HoL as would the forgotten single Big Sky.

Breathing is indeed a fine track. But I think it is topped by Sat in Your Lap and The Dreaming and most of the rest of The Dreaming album.

Keeping it to female solo artists of the 1980s......

1. Kate Bush - Under The Ivy - The B side of Running Up That Hill. This track is adored and rightly adopted as an anthem by true Kate Bush fans due to the autobiographical nature of its lyrics across this beautiful piano ballad by Britain's greatest ever female artist.

2. Alison Moyet - Is This Love - A very 1980s sort of song, with a very 1980s Jimmy Iovine production. But thanks to Basildon's finest Jazz/Blues singer it is turned into something quite special.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2WuxxXAi56Y

3. Kirsty MacColl - Free World - Most famous for having a TV comedian/actress butcher her debut penned single, then having big hits with covers of Billy Bragg & Ray Davies songs, and singing on the best Christmas Song ever. This Johnny Marr co-written track is a viscereal lyrical attack on the evil that was 1980s Thatchers Britain by the late great criminally underrated singer/songwriter.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxG5p57ZW9s

4. Madonna - Spanish Eyes - OK, obviously Like A Prayer is her anthem & best song. But I'd thought I'd go for her best ever non-single track IMHO taken from her best album "Like A Prayer". Fantastic vocals from "Her Madgesty" too.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DB-DvkMCxls

5. Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time - To think that during 1984 most punters thought Cyndi had greater career prospects than Madonna. But this is a great melancholy song.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3C6AXnnjgqI

6. Dusty Springfield - Nothing Has Been Proved - Written & produced by the Pet Shop Boys, this was a welcome solo return to the Top40 after nearly 19 years in 1989.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IZip7Y_IDqQ

7. D.C.Lee - See The Day - One time Wham! backing singer (before Pepsi), she then joined the Style Council and became Paul Weller's partner (replacing singer Tracie Young (do you remember her)), this wonderful track was a big Top 5 hit late in 1985. It has of course been murdered by Girls Aloud in the 21st Century.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=c-8agIMQmhU

8. Elkie Brooks - No More The Fool - A great after the break up song, performed by one of Britain's greatest female singers. Certainly better than Bonnie Tyler.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lHDvhaQE324

9. Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm - Quite simply Trevor Horn's greatest ever production. It is hard to believe this fantastic track failed to go top10 in 1985.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iA8r7nk_oL0

10. Neneh Cherry - Manchild - Produced by partner Cameron McVeey (who owns the rights to the name the Sugababes). This was a superb follow up to Buffalo Stance.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4U7_19kWuDs

11. Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour - Forget Belinda Carlisle, this was the best solo single by a member of the GoGos in the 1980s. The guitarist songwriter may have been a bit of a one hit wonder, but what an infectious uplifting tune.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ZHP4HbA2M

12. Olivia Newton-John - Magic - This US #1 hit from 1980 still sounds great today. Personally, I think "The Thunder from Down Under" was at her peak sexier than either Madonna or Kylie have managed. ... And Princess Diana ripped off her hairdo/perm from this video....

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0_5DiOW4s90

Interesting thread - possibly made more interesting by the glaring omissions ;)

No 80s female singer list could possibly complete without 3 artists - Siouxsie, Kate Bush and Alison Moyet. Thank the lord for thisispop :D

Here's mine:

1. Alison Moyet - Don't Go

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A9OetM1Kgc...feature=related

A Yazoo hit, but performed here by the lady herself in an acoustic version on last Sunday's Andrew Marr Show. One of the finest singles of the decade sung by our greatest living female singer - what more could you want? Now here's to the Yazoo reunion next month.... :yahoo:

2. Annie Lennox / Eurythmics - Julia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytq7jeMNGQQ

OK, so she sounds like a cat on a harpoon these days, but in her day, La Lennox was fantastic - well, up to about 1988, anyway. Here's the spellbinding 'Julia' from the soundtrack to 1984 - awesome, and just pipping Shame and I Need a Man to this list. How stunning does she look in this video, too? :o

3. Siouxsie - Dazzle

This incredible single is proof that the Bond franchise will never be complete without having this fine lady do a theme tune. This is one of the Banshee's greatest and most overlooked singles - bizarre. This just pipped The Creatures, Siouxsie's side-project and the Mel Torme cover 'Right Now'.

4. Kate Bush - This Woman's Work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm901CXujEg

IMO the lady's finest ever single - if not the finest single ever released - the jaw-dropping wondrousness that is This Woman's Work, originally from John Hughes' 'She's Having a Baby' movie - this single didn't even reach the UK top 20 - criminal.

5. Carmel - Bad Day

When Duffy was a glint in her folk's eyes, Carmel was making the music that glides to number one these days - but selling far fewer records. 'Bad Day' is sublime - from the spine-tingling vocal to the gorgeous lounge-y production... wowser.

6. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) - Pink Orange Red

Vocalists really don't come any better than ex-Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser. Yet here's her first mention here.... this is the stunning Pink Orange Red - never a single, but a jewel in Fraser's crown all the same - beautiful.

7. Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRjWtlpl2Bo

Much has been made of Trevor Horn's work on Slave to the Rhythm - but it's Jones's earlier work with the late Alex Sadkin that really showed off her icy cool voice to the max - here's the fabulous Pull Up To The Bumper. Just... wow. For anyone who hasn't got it already - invest in her Island Life best of - it's faultless.

8. Danielle Dax - Cathouse

Perfect rollicking pop single from Danielle - who always seemed to mainstream for the goths, yet too 'out there' for Joe Public. This is her best single - brilliant stuff - give it a whirl - you'll love it.

9. Kim Wilde - View From A Bridge

IMO her best single, this was off her second album, Select. Great production and a surprisingly good vocal from Kim (I've seen her live - painful it was). Fab pop single, this, though.

10. Toyah - The Vow

This was a huge flop single - but it's great - a real lost classic. This just pipped Thunder in the Mountains to a place here.

11. Lene Lovich - New Toy

Before Gwen Stefani stole her singing style, Lene notched up a few hits in the late 70s, early 80s. This Thomas Dolby-produced single was a minor hit in 1981 - the song, and Lene - fab stuff.

12. Hazel O'Connor - D-Days

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKvBR8MZH94

The last big hit from Ms O'Connor - this was from her second album Cover Plus - great pop single.

Just missing the album, but worthy of a mention anyway is ABBA's Frida and her excellent single 'I Know There's Something Going On' - why on earth wasn't this a number one single? It's ace... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUUj3KxOaUM

Edited by russt68

This is mine! Some classic choices... some are absolutely horrendous to be perfectly honest but sometimes we can't deny the enjoyment we get out of certain songs, regardless of how bad they are!..

(01) Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

Relatively brief chart career really (aside from the slight comeback later in 1996). This stands as her best track IMO.

(02) Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper

I also love 'Slave To The Rhythm' but this has that edge - I can't not move to this whenever I hear it! Class track!

(03) Madonna - Lucky Star

The true essense of vintage Madonna. It's far from remarkable, but there's someting about this twee little gem that puts a big grin on my face!

(04) Kylie Minogue - Hand On Your Heart

OK guilty pleasure number one here! SAW changed their sound (just slightly!) when they made this track, they sounded more polished, more slick. Even Jose Gonzalez had love for this!

(05) Sonia - You'll Never Stop Me Loving You

I am so truly very sorry...

(06) Hazel Dean - Who's Leaving Who

'Searchin' seems to be a closet favourite here, but I think this is actually a crackin' song!

(07) Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart

Sort-of one hit wonder, really. But this is a proper belter!

(08) Coldcut and Lisa Stansfield - People Hold On

Her first taste of chart success and Coldcut were s**thot back in the last 80s with their cutting edge sound. This is far, far better than anything else she would end up doing as a soloist, sadly.

(09) Madonna - Into The Groove

You can dance... for inspiration.

(10) Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's For Real

Yup, SAW raise their ugly heads again! OK, so it's no 'I Feel Love' and her best material was released in the 70s, but this still above decent!

Great list Russ, both This Woman's Work and Frida nearly made my album and I am gutted I forgot The Vow - beautiful song.

OK, here's mine:

1. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

2. Belinda Carlisle - I Get Weak

3. Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

4. Neneh Cherry - Manchild

5. Madonna - Borderline

6. Kirsty MacColl - A New England

7. Teena Marie - I Need Your Lovin'

8. Stephanie Mills - Never Knew Love Like This Before

9. Mandy Smith - I Just Can't Wait

10. Tina Turner - Let's Stay Together

11. Kim Wilde - You Came

12. Kim Wilde - You Keep Me Hangin' On

And here is mine, I got a bit carried away and made it into a double album:

1. Bette Midler: Wind Beneath My Wings - My all time Favourite song.

2. Samantha Fox: Touch Me (I Want Your Body) - Still listening this very catchy pop track quite often.

3. Sandra: Maria Magdalena - Tons of great eurodance tracks by Sandra, too bad she never broke into UK top 40.

4. Madonna: Into The Groove - Madonna's finest.

5. Madonna: Live To Tell - And a close second.

6. Tiffany: Could've Been - Very beautiful ballad.

7. Debbie Gibson: Foolish Beat - likewise.

8. Paula Abdul: Straight Up - Our fav AI judge (LOL) when she was drinking less from her coke cup (LOL).

9. Martika: Toy Soldiers - Touching track about youth with drug problems.

10. Laura Branigan: Self Control - Big eurobeat, I think time has treated this pretty nicely.

11. Ankie Bagger: Where Were You Last Night - A very catchy Swedish pop/dance track.

12. Stephanie: Irresistible - Yes, the Princess of Monaco did have a few big hits in Continental Europe.

13. Pat Benatar: Love Is A Battlefield - Very good and good video also.

14. Cyndi Lauper: Change Of Heart - US no 1 that bombed in the UK, too bad, it is her finest IMO.

15. Paula Abdul: Cold Hearted - Another great track from the harshest AI judge ever.

16. Tina Turner: Private Dancer - Tina at her finest.

17. Kylie Minogue: I Should Be So Lucky - The start of a great career.

18. Kim Wilde: You Keep Me Hanging On - Her US chart-topper is very high-energy remake of a classic.

19. Taylor Dayne: Tell It To My Heart - Big hair, big voice, great track.

20. Sandra: Stop For A Minute - Another one from my favourite German singer (and Enigma's wife).

21. France Gall: Ella Elle L'a - French chart-topper that I really like (by a former ESC winner if I remember right).

22. Samantha Fox: Nothing's Gonna Stop Me now - SAW at their peak - as was ms Fox.

23. Pat Benatar: Invincible - Another great one from Pat.

24. Sabrina: Boys - She was banned from Top Of The Pops and really did have hard time keeping her top on.

25. Desireless: Voyage Voyage - Another good French pop track.

26. Jody Watley: Don't You Want Me - American rnb/pop classic.

27. Cyndi Lauper: True Colours - Beautiful ballad.

28. Belinda Carlisle: Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Nice pop track.

29. Tiffany: I Think We're Alone Now - Chart topper all around the world and quite deservingly so.

30. Stacey Q: Two Of Hearts - nice little pop/dance number.

31. Tanita Tikaram: Twist In My Sobriety - haunting number from Tanita.

32. Madonna: La Isla Bonita - And I'll finish with some latino flaour by queen of pop.

erm... the idea of 'my album of' was to limit the number of tracks deliberately so it doesnt turn into a 'list off' feature, which tend to be lazy as people just put anything down..

agreed about 'desireless' though :)

Well, I didn't see anywhere that limit...I mean it could be just one very long album. I very rarely respond to these kinda threads but last nite I decided to do one and after flipping through charts from several countries all through the 80s I noticed that there really are that many great tracks. I could list maybe half a dozen as my ultimate favourites but the rest are pretty evenly good IMO so I figured since my album of 80s females would include all these songs then I'll post the whole list.
